Volume 1 Chapter 4 — Midnight Whispers & Fire on Ice (深夜私语:冰封之火)

Flames of Retribution: The Disowned Heiress 4 of 6

One o’clock in the morning. Heavy, relentless rain beat against the expansive floor-to-ceiling glass of Dominic Vance’s private penthouse study, creating a liquid curtain between the warm, luxurious interior and the dark, stormy abyss of City A.

Inside the study, the fire in the stone hearth crackled softly, casting ambient golden and crimson light across dark mahogany bookshelves, leather-bound volumes, and polished hardwood floors. The rich scent of burning cedarwood, aged bourbon, and rain-infused night air filled the room, accompanied by the deep, melancholy notes of a Bach cello suite playing softly from hidden acoustic speakers.

Dominic Vance stood near the fireplace, his broad shadow stretching long across the room. He had unbuttoned his vest and rolled the sleeves of his crisp white shirt up to his forearms, revealing strong, corded muscles. In his right hand, he held a thick, dark-web intelligence file bound in black leather, stamped with the ominous silver raven emblem of “Shadow Eye”—the most dangerous, expensive underground intelligence network in Asia.

The heavy oak door of the study creaked open softly.

Elena Vance stepped into the room. She had shed her corporate suit for a long, midnight-blue silk robe that pooled gracefully around her ankles. Her dark, glossy hair fell loose over her shoulders in soft, untamed waves. Her face was pale, stripped of her executive armor, leaving her looking extraordinarily ethereal—and hauntingly vulnerable.

She stopped dead in her tracks the moment her eyes fell upon the black leather dossier in Dominic’s hand.

A sharp spark of alarm flared in her crystalline eyes. Two hours ago, after returning from the trading floor triumph, Elena had secretly contracted a dark-web fixer to intercept and destroy an undercover investigation Victoria Sterling had launched into her past. She had intended to handle the fixer alone at midnight, keeping Dominic shielded from the dirtier, dangerous underbelly of her private war.

She had underestimated how tightly Dominic’s security grid enveloped her world.

Dominic slowly turned to face her, his sharp jawline rigid, his dark, intense eyes locking onto hers with a mixture of stern authority and deep, suppressed emotion.

“You were going to slip out to the old docks alone at two AM,” Dominic said, his deep baritone voice dangerously low, reverberating through the quiet room. “Without an escort. Without my knowledge.”

Elena swallowed down her instinctual defensiveness, stepping further into the warm glow of the fire. “Dominic, it was a routine lead. Victoria paid Shadow Eye two million dollars this morning to dig into my childhood records in City A. I didn’t want to drag you into an underground black-market confrontation.”

Dominic stepped toward the fireplace. Without a word, he unsealed the dossier, pulled out a decanter of high-proof Kentucky bourbon, and splashed the golden liquid over the thick stack of surveillance photographs and birth record analyses.

With a flick of his thumb, Dominic struck a long wooden match. The small flame ignited, casting sharp shadows across his aristocratic features. He dropped the match onto the bourbon-soaked pages.

*Fwhoosh!*

A vibrant, electric-blue flame erupted across the hearth, rapidly consuming the Shadow Eye report. The paper charred, curled, and dissolved into black ash in seconds, taking Victoria’s two-million-dollar investigation with it.

“Victoria’s fixers were scrubbed an hour ago,” Dominic said, turning back to Elena, his dark eyes burning brighter than the hearth fire. “The Shadow Eye network has been paid off, and a forged identity file has been delivered to Victoria’s desk. Did you really think you could take such a risk without me knowing, Elena?”

Elena backed away slightly, her heels pressing against the cool floor near the massive glass window overlooking the neon-glisten skyline. She folded her arms across her chest, wrapping her midnight-blue silk robe tighter around her body, building her emotional walls back up.

“This is my revenge, Dominic,” she said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to maintain her icy composure. “Victoria poisoned my father. Chloe stole my home. They left me to freeze in the pine forest! I am grateful for everything you gave me—my life, my training, Vance Global’s power—but I cannot let you risk your reputation, your company, or your life for my personal ghosts. If this war turns dark, I must fight it alone!”

Dominic didn’t answer with words.

Instead, he closed the distance between them in two long, powerful strides. Before Elena could react, Dominic stepped directly into her personal space, his imposing frame blocking out the rest of the room. He reached out, his hands slamming against the cool glass window on either side of her head, effectively trapping her between his broad shoulders and the rain-slicked glass.

The sudden physical proximity was overwhelming. The heat radiating from his body warred directly against the cool chill of the glass window at her back. Elena’s breath caught in her throat, her chest heaving as she looked up into his fierce, unyielding gaze.

“Fight it alone?” Dominic whispered, his voice laced with raw, unadulterated passion. “Look at me, Astrid.”

Hearing her true name spoken in his deep, intimate voice hit her like a physical blow.

“I didn’t pull your frozen, dying body out of that snowdrift three years ago just to watch you turn into a ghost,” Dominic said, his gaze dropping to her lips before burning back into her eyes. “I didn’t hold your hand through six months of lung fever just to let you freeze your own heart. Your war is my war. Your pain is my pain. If you walk into hell, Elena, you walk with me.”

Elena’s icy armor cracked. The hyper-vigilance she had maintained for three long years, the absolute discipline she forced upon her soul every waking second—it all began to crumble under the weight of his fierce, unshakeable devotion.

A single, hot tear slipped from her eye, tracing a quiet path down her pale, porcelain cheek.

Dominic’s expression softened instantly. He raised his right hand, his long, warm thumb gently wiping the tear from her cheek. His fingers moved down, gently tilting her chin upward.

“Don’t hide from me,” he murmured softly.

Dominic leaned down and claimed her lips.

The kiss was not gentle, nor was it hesitant. It was a deep, consuming, passionate fire that swept through her senses like a summer storm. The contrast was intoxicating—the ice of her past melting under the scorching heat of his lips. His touch was firm, possessive, yet filled with a profound, reverence that made her entire body tremble.

Elena let out a soft, surrender gasp against his mouth. Her defensive hands, which had been pressed against his chest to push him away, tangled into the fabric of his white linen shirt, gripping his lapels fiercely.

She kissed him back with equal passion, pouring three years of suppressed grief, lonely nightmares, and unuttered longing into the kiss. The cool glass pressed against her back was forgotten; the rain slamming against the window became nothing more than background music to the rapid, synchronized pounding of their heartbeats.

When Dominic finally parted from her lips, his forehead rested gently against hers. Their breathing was ragged, synchronized in the quiet, firelit study. Dominic’s hands slid down to wrap securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure in the world.

Elena closed her eyes, resting her head against his shoulder, listening to the strong, steady thrum of his heart beneath her cheek. For the first time in three long years, the coldness in her chest receded. She didn’t feel like a vengeful ghost hunting her enemies in the dark.

She felt alive. She felt safe.

“We finish them together,” Dominic whispered into her dark hair, his voice an absolute vow.

“Together,” Elena answered softly, her fingers gripping his waist tightly.

At three o’clock that same morning, across the city, the atmosphere in Victoria Sterling’s private study at Sterling Manor was suffocatingly dark and cold.

Victoria sat behind her massive carved oak desk, illuminated only by a single green banker’s lamp. Her face was haggard, deep lines of exhaustion carved around her eyes. Across the desk lay a glossy black folder—the forged intelligence report delivered by Dominic’s undercover operatives.

Victoria scanned the pages for the fifth time. The document detailed “Elena Vance’s” background as the orphaned daughter of a deceased Swiss private banker, raised in Zurich, backed by European venture capital trusts, with zero historical ties to City A or the Sterling family.

Victoria let out a long, shaky breath, sinking back into her leather chair. “An orphan from Zurich… merely a coincidence. She just happens to look like that wretched girl…”

Yet, despite the scrubbed evidence, an ominous intuition coiled deep within Victoria’s chest. The way Elena had looked at her at the gala, the ruthless precision with which she had engineered Chloe’s humiliation, the sudden collapse of Montgomery Logistics… it felt too calculated. Too personal.

“If she is an outsider, she is a wolf,” Victoria muttered to herself, her eyes narrowing in dark suspicion. “But if she is Astrid’s ghost… she will have a weakness.”

Victoria stood up, walked to the far corner of her study, and slid aside a heavy oil painting of her late husband. Behind it was a concealed electronic safe. She punched in a six-digit code and pulled open the heavy steel door.

Reaching into the dark recess, Victoria pulled out a flat, red velvet display case.

She walked back to her desk and opened it. Resting upon black velvet was a legendary piece of fine jewelry—”The Blood Rose.” It was a magnificent fifteen-carat pigeon-blood Burmese ruby necklace, framed by teardrop diamonds, which had belonged exclusively to Astrid Sterling’s late biological mother, Eleanor.

The deep red ruby caught the green lamp light, glowing like a drop of fresh blood.

A cold, malicious smile spread slowly across Victoria’s face. She picked up her desk phone and dialed her private public relations director.

“Madam Victoria?” the director answered sleepily.

“Call the committee for tomorrow night’s Royal Charity Auction at the Opera House,” Victoria ordered, her voice laced with venomous greed. “Tell them Sterling Financial Group is putting ‘The Blood Rose’ ruby necklace up for open public bidding as our premier item.”

The director gasped over the phone. *”Madam Victoria! That was Lady Eleanor’s private heirloom! Are you certain?”*

“Do as I command!” Victoria snapped. “List it immediately. Set the opening bid at ten million dollars.”

Victoria hung up the receiver, her fingers caressing the cold ruby stone.

Sterling Group desperately needed fifty million dollars in liquid cash to pay off emergency offshore debt collectors after the gala disaster. But more importantly, the necklace was the ultimate lure.

“If Elena Vance is truly an outsider from Zurich, she will see only a pretty stone and ignore it,” Victoria whispered into the dark room, her eyes glinting with murderous arrogance. “But if you are Astrid Sterling’s ghost… you will never sit by and watch your mother’s blood be sold to strangers.”

Victoria snapped the velvet box shut with a sharp, echoing click.

“Come to the Opera House, Elena,” Victoria hissed. “Come and buy back your mother’s legacy.”
