Volume 1 Chapter 2 — Uninvited Empress at the Gala (未邀之后)

Flames of Retribution: The Disowned Heiress 2 of 6

The grand ballroom of Sterling Manor was a monument to gilded excess. Massive crystal chandeliers suspended from vaulted, gold-leaf ceilings cast warm, dazzling light across three hundred of City A’s most influential political figures, corporate tycoons, and high-society aristocrats. Live orchestral strings echoed softly from the upper mezzanine, filling the air with delicate classical melodies while liveried waiters glided through the crowd carrying silver trays of vintage Krug champagne and beluga caviar.

At the far end of the ballroom, upon an elevated marble stage framed by tall arrangements of white lilies and orchids, stood Victoria Sterling. Dressed in a lavish burgundy velvet gown adorned with heavy gold embroidery, she exuded the effortless arrogance of a woman who believed she sat firmly atop the world.

Victoria stepped toward the polished brass microphone, her dark eyes scanning the room with regal satisfaction. Beside her stood her daughter, Chloe Sterling, shimmering in a pristine, white silk designer gown, and Julian Montgomery, heir to Montgomery Logistics, looking handsome and sharp in a tailored tuxedo.

Victoria raised her crystal flute, tapping it lightly with a silver spoon to command the room’s attention. The orchestral music faded into silence as the crowd turned toward the stage.

“Distinguished guests, esteemed partners, and cherished friends,” Victoria began, her voice smooth, commanding, and laced with polished corporate optimism. “Tonight, as we gather for the Sterling Annual Gala, we do not merely celebrate our company’s record quarterly performance. We celebrate a union of strength, vision, and legacy.”

She gestured toward Chloe and Julian. Chloe stepped forward into the spotlight, her lips curved into a smug, triumphant smile. She lifted her left hand high into the air, allowing the spotlight to ignite the massive five-carat diamond ring resting on her finger—the very engagement ring she had taken from Astrid Sterling three years ago.

“Tonight,” Victoria continued, her voice swelling with pride, “we officially announce the betrothal of my beloved daughter, Chloe, to Julian Montgomery! This union seals an exclusive alliance between Sterling Financial Group and Montgomery Logistics, solidifying our joint dominance over City A’s economic future.”

Applause erupted across the ballroom. Chloe beamed, leaning against Julian, who smiled charmingly for the society photographers snapping photos near the stage.

“Tonight marks a glorious new era for Sterling Financial,” Chloe declared into the microphone, her voice high and arrogant. “The past errors and tragic failures of our family are officially erased. The Sterling name stands untarnished, and our future is brighter than ever!”

Among the senior financial figures near the front row, quiet whispers rippled softly. A few veteran bankers exchanged guarded looks, whispering about persistent rumors regarding Sterling Group’s recent liquidity shortages and unpaid debt obligations in Europe. But Victoria quickly stepped back to the microphone, raising her glass high to drown out the murmurs.

“To the future!” Victoria called out, her voice resounding across the hall. “To Sterling and Montgomery!”

“To Sterling and Montgomery!” the crowd echoed, lifting their glasses in unison.

Before a single guest could sip their champagne, a heavy, resounding thud reverberated through the hall.

The massive ten-foot carved mahogany double doors at the far end of the ballroom slammed open, the sound echoing like a cannon shot off the marble walls. The orchestra stumbled to an abrupt halt. The laughter, clinking glasses, and polite chatter died instantly, replaced by a suffocating, breathless silence.

Standing framed in the doorway, bathed in the cool rain mist from the courtyard, were two figures.

Dominic Vance stood towering and formidable in his dark tuxedo. Arm-in-arm with him was Elena Vance.

A collective gasp ripped through the ballroom. Three hundred guests turned as one, paralyzed by the sheer visual majesty of the pair. Elena’s emerald silk gown glinted under the chandeliers like liquid jewel, her green diamond falcon brooch flashing with terrifying brilliance. Her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders in flawless waves, framing a face of such icy, aristocratic perfection that several elderly socialites dropped their glasses, sending crystal shattering across the marble floor.

Flashbulbs immediately erupted from the press line at the perimeter, blinding white light washing over Elena’s serene, regal countenance.

Dominic Vance took a step forward, his voice cutting through the silent room like a blade of honed steel, rich, deep, and carrying undeniable authority.

“Pardon the interruption, Madam Sterling,” Dominic said, his dark gaze sweeping over Victoria’s frozen expression on stage. “Vance Global does not usually attend private engagements. However, as of six o’clock this evening, Vance Global has officially established a five-hundred-million-dollar strategic investment fund here in City A.”

A wave of thunderous muttering rippled through the crowd. Five hundred million dollars! It was a war chest capable of reshaping the entire financial landscape of the region.

Dominic turned slightly, looking down at Elena with a subtle, respectful gesture. “I have appointed Senior Partner Elena Vance as the sole plenipotentiary managing director of this fund. Her decisions carry the full authority of Vance Global.”

He looked back at the stage, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Vance Global does not make small moves. We invest where corporate leadership is competent—and we replace where it is not.”

Victoria’s breath hitched in her chest. She gripped the edge of the podium so tightly her knuckles turned white. Vance Global’s capital was the ultimate lifeline Sterling Group desperately needed to cover their secret debts. But as she stared at Elena Vance’s face, a cold, visceral terror seized her heart. The woman looked horrifyingly like Astrid Sterling—yet her presence was so overwhelmingly powerful, so impossibly wealthy, that Victoria’s mind struggled to reconcile the ghost with the empress standing before her.

Beside Victoria, Chloe’s face distorted into a mask of pure, poisonous envy.

Within seconds, the prominent CEOs, board members, and political figures who had been flattering Chloe moments ago turned their backs on the stage, eagerly pushing toward Elena like iron filings drawn to a powerful magnet.

“Partner Vance! Welcome to City A!”

“Partner Vance, I am Director Chen of National Commercial Bank…”

“Elena! A moment of your time, please!”

Chloe stood abandoned on stage, watching the high-society crowd fall over themselves to pay homage to the mysterious woman in emerald. Her hands trembled with rage. She looked at Julian, but Julian’s eyes were locked onto Elena Vance, his mouth slightly open, spellbound by Elena’s breathtaking beauty and absolute dominance.

Chloe’s jealousy boiled over into blind malice. Spotting a waiter passing by, she snatched a heavy crystal goblet filled to the brim with deep red Pinot Noir.

“Who does she think she is?” Chloe hissed under her breath.

She stepped off the stage, her high heels clicking loudly against the marble as she marched straight toward the crowd surrounding Elena. Guests instinctively parted, sensing the venom radiating from the Sterling heiress.

Elena was conversing smoothly with a senior port authority director, her voice calm and articulate. She did not turn her head, yet her sharp peripheral vision caught Chloe’s rapid approach. She saw the white silk dress, the flushed, hysterical face, and the angle at which Chloe held the glass of red wine.

Chloe accelerated her pace, pretending to stumble over the hem of her own gown just as she reached Elena’s side. With a vicious flick of her wrist, Chloe aimed the full glass of Pinot Noir directly at the chest of Elena’s pristine emerald dress.

“Oh! Accid—!” Chloe began to cry out in fake dismay.

She never finished the word.

Before the dark red liquid could leave the rim of the glass, Elena moved. Her reaction was lightning-fast, executed with a fluid, terrifying grace. Without an inch of wasted motion, Elena sidestepped half a pace, her slender left hand shooting out to catch Chloe’s wrist in a feather-light yet unyielding grip.

Using Chloe’s own aggressive forward momentum, Elena executed a subtle, effortless twist.

*Splaaash!*

The heavy goblet flipped violently back toward Chloe. A thick wave of dark red Pinot Noir erupted through the air, drenching Chloe’s chest, neck, and the entire front of her pristine white silk gown in a broad, ugly streak of crimson stain.

The glass slipped from Chloe’s numb fingers, crashing onto the marble floor and shattering into a dozen sharp shards.

Chloe gasped in violent shock, stumbling backward, her hands flying to her chest in horror. The deep red wine soaked through her thin silk gown, clinging to her skin like wet blood, completely ruining her multi-thousand-dollar designer dress.

The entire ballroom froze once again.

Reporters shoved past security barricades, camera flashes exploding in a blinding barrage of strobes. Shutter clicks roared like heavy gunfire, capturing every angle of Chloe Sterling’s humiliated, wine-stained meltdown.

Elena stood perfectly untouched. Not a single drop of wine had landed on her emerald gown. Her hair remained immaculate, her green diamond brooch sparkling with cold indifference.

Elena looked down at Chloe with a look of serene, detached pity, her soft, melodic voice carrying clearly across the quiet circle of onlookers.

“Mind your step, Miss Sterling,” Elena said softly, her lips curving into a subtle, razor-sharp smile. “A young lady who cannot even control her own balance can hardly be trusted to carry a family legacy.”

A wave of muffled snickers and quiet laughter broke out among the surrounding aristocrats.

“Look at her… how embarrassing!” a lady whispered behind her feather fan.

“Clumsy and malicious. Typical spoiled brat.”

Chloe stood drenched in red wine, her eyes wide with shock and humiliation, her face burning like fire under the glare of fifty media lights.

Victoria rushed down from the stage in a panic, her face twisted in a mixture of rage and terror. She grabbed a dark cashmere shawl from a nearby chair, throwing it over Chloe’s stained shoulders to hide the ruin, while harshly whispering into Chloe’s ear.

“Shut your mouth and apologize!” Victoria hissed fiercely under her breath. “That is Vance Global’s managing partner! If you offend her, our five-hundred-million-dollar credit line vanishes! Apologize right now!”

Chloe choked back a sob of pure humiliation. Trembling under her mother’s terrifying glare, she bowed her head toward Elena, tears of rage leaking through her ruined mascara.

“I… I am deeply sorry, Partner Vance,” Chloe choked out, her voice trembling. “It… it was an accident.”

Elena did not even look at her. She merely lifted her gloved hand in a subtle gesture of dismissive indifference. “Accepted. You may leave.”

Humiliated beyond endurance, Chloe burst into tears, turned, and fled toward the private VIP exit, her red-stained gown trailing behind her like a crimson stain on the white marble.

As Victoria hurried after her daughter to manage the media damage control, Julian Montgomery stepped forward into the vacant space.

He straightened his tuxedo lapels, stepping into Elena’s personal space with a smooth, practiced charm. His eyes, however, were burning with intense, undisguised fascination. He stared at Elena’s neck, her emerald earrings, and her piercing eyes. The resemblance to Astrid Sterling was undeniable, yet Elena Vance possessed an aura of aristocratic power, wealth, and supreme sophistication that made Astrid seem like a faint shadow.

Julian reached out, taking Elena’s empty champagne flute with gentlemanly courtesy. “Partner Vance… please accept my sincerest apologies for my fiancée’s impulsive behavior. Chloe is young and easily overwhelmed by public events.”

He stepped closer, lowering his voice into a intimate, suggestive whisper. “Montgomery Logistics is the backbone of City A’s transport infrastructure. Unlike Sterling Group, we have clean assets and ambitious leadership. A true visionary like you needs a partner who truly understands high finance… not spoiled heiresses.”

As he handed the empty glass to a passing waiter, Julian’s fingers brushed against Elena’s palm. With practiced dexterity, he slid a heavy, gold-embossed black metal business card into her hand, pressing his thumb against hers.

“That is my private VIP line,” Julian whispered, his gaze dropping to her lips before meeting her eyes with a hypocritical, ambitious smile. “Call me tonight, Elena. Let us discuss how Vance Global and Montgomery Logistics can build something extraordinary together… in private.”

Elena felt a cold wave of disgust wash over her soul, remembering how this exact same man had pledged eternal love to her four years ago before abandoning her to Chloe. Yet, her face remained a mask of flawless, charming warmth.

She closed her slender fingers around his black card, offering Julian a cold, intoxicating smile that made his breath hitch.

“I will keep that in mind, Mr. Montgomery,” she said softly.

Before Julian could say another word, a heavy, warm hand settled firmly around Elena’s waist. Dominic Vance stepped up behind her, his tall frame blocking Julian’s view like a dark, impenetrable fortress. His dark eyes locked onto Julian with a cold, predatory stare that made the heir of Montgomery Logistics involuntarily step back a pace.

“Enjoy the gala, Mr. Montgomery,” Dominic said, his baritone voice carrying a chilling edge of finality.

Julian swallowed hard, forcing a polite nod, and retreated into the crowd, his heart pounding with a mixture of thrill and fear.

Elena turned slightly in Dominic’s embrace, looking at the black metal card in her hand before sliding it into her velvet clutch. Behind them, the ballroom was in chaos, media cameras broadcasting Chloe’s stained meltdown across the city’s financial news networks.

She had returned to her former home. She had taken back her stage.

*You stole my name and my ring, Chloe,* Elena thought, her cold eyes glinting in the chandelier light. *But tonight, the world sees you for what you truly are—nothing more than a clown in a stained dress.*
