Chapter 6: The Red Hook Ambush

Claimed by the Mafia King’s Black Card 6 of 6

The heavy dump truck rammed the lead escort SUV with bone-shattering force, driving the armored Cadillac straight into a reinforced concrete pillar. The deafening crash echoed down the narrow Red Hook shipping corridor. A second dump truck skidded sideways across the rear escape route, blocking the exit.

The three-SUV Rossi convoy was completely pinned in the dark, rain-slicked alleyway, trapped between towering three-story stacks of corrugated steel shipping containers. Flashing red emergency strobes from the damaged vehicles painted the torrential rain in violent bursts of crimson.

Before the twisted metal stopped grinding, ten masked mercenaries in heavy tactical body armor emerged from the shadows of the container stacks.

They raised suppressed automatic rifles. The rhythmic crack-crack-crack of heavy 7.62mm armor-piercing rounds erupted from the dark.

Bullets hammered the Escalade’s B6 ballistic windows. The deafening acoustic slap of high-velocity lead striking glass filled the cabin. Expanding spiderwebs of white fractured glass bloomed rapidly across Clara’s passenger window.

Gabriel Rossi moved with terrifying speed.

He threw his heavy, muscular body across the leather bench seat, slamming Clara down beneath the armored doorframe. The crushing warmth of his broad chest covered her completely, shielding her from the incoming fire. His midnight-blue tuxedo jacket shielded her face from the pulverizing glass dust spraying into the cabin.

Gabriel unholstered the custom SIG Sauer P226 Legion from his shoulder rig. His gunmetal eyes turned to black obsidian. He kicked the passenger door port open a fraction of an inch, thrusting the barrel through the gap. He fired twice. The explosive report of the 9mm rounds dropped two approaching shooters in the rain.

In the driver’s seat, Marco Bellini kicked open his own firing port, returning fire with his tactical sidearm.

A ricocheting steel-core bullet screamed through a damaged seam in the driver’s door hinge. The round tore through Marco’s left shoulder, burying itself in the headrest.

Marco grunted in sudden, blinding agony. The coppery tang of fresh blood sprayed across the dashboard. Marco gripped the steering wheel one-handed, his tactical shirt rapidly soaking dark red, but he continued firing into the dark.

Clara lay pinned beneath Gabriel’s weight. Her emerald silk gown tore against the floor mats. Adrenaline surged through her veins, sharpening her survival focus into a razor edge. She refused to freeze. She refused to let Gabriel and Marco die in this alley.

She scanned the floorboards. She looked beneath the front passenger seat.

On the damaged right side of the vehicle, Gabriel was engaged in a heavy firefight with three shooters pressing the flank.

Through the spiderwebbed rear window, Clara saw a mercenary captain in a ballistic helmet step out from behind a concrete pylon. The captain approached the rear door of the Escalade. He reached to his tactical vest and pulled the steel pin on an M34 thermite grenade.

He intended to drop the live canister onto the roof, where the military-grade thermite would burn at four thousand degrees, melting through the armor and incinerating everyone inside the cabin.

Clara realized they had less than four seconds.

She twisted her body, reaching under the front passenger seat. Her fingers locked around the handle of a heavy, ten-pound solid titanium emergency dry-chemical fire extinguisher. She unclipped it from the mounting bracket with a violent jerk.

“Gabriel, move!” Clara shouted.

She planted her heels against the transmission tunnel and kicked the damaged right rear door open with every ounce of force she possessed.

The heavy armored door slammed outward, catching the mercenary captain off guard. He stumbled backward.

With ferocious speed, Clara launched herself upward. She gripped the titanium cylinder with both hands and swung it like a sledgehammer directly into the captain’s face.

The heavy metallic thud of titanium striking Kevlar cracked over the gunfire. The impact shattered the mercenary’s ballistic visor. The captain’s head snapped backward, and he collapsed onto the wet asphalt.

The live thermite grenade slipped from his fingers. It rolled across the sloped cobblestones, dropping into a flooded drainage ditch. The canister hissed violently, boiling the dirty water into a thick cloud of white steam, rendering the thermite completely harmless.

Gabriel spun instantly, recognizing the opening. He leveled the SIG Sauer and fired two lethal rounds directly through the fallen mercenary’s chest plate, neutralizing the threat permanently.

Gabriel kicked the driver’s side door completely open and stepped out into the torrential Atlantic rain.

He moved with cold, surgical military precision. The water plastered his white dress shirt to his heavy chest. He acquired the remaining two ambushers near the front dump truck and eliminated them with rapid, flawless double-taps.

The gunfire ceased. The only sounds left were the hiss of boiling radiator fluid and the relentless downpour.

Sirens screamed down the corridor. Four black Rossi backup SUVs tore into the alley, tires sliding on the wet cobblestones. A dozen Rossi enforcers poured out with tactical rifles, securing the perimeter in seconds. Two men ripped the driver’s door open, applying a combat tourniquet to Marco’s bleeding shoulder.

Gabriel walked to the dead mercenary captain lying near the drainage ditch. He pinned the man’s chest beneath his heavy boot. He reached down and ripped the tactical vest open.

Gabriel retrieved an encrypted burner smartphone from the interior pocket. The screen was cracked but active.

He keyed the access log. The screen displayed recent outbound calls and encrypted convoy coordinates. The data packets were routed directly to two contacts: Vincent Santoro and Claire Dubois.

Gabriel grabbed the dying captain by the collar, hauling him halfway off the asphalt.

“Santoro ordered this,” Gabriel demanded, his voice a low, vibrating growl of absolute violence. “How did he track the hospital transfer?”

The mercenary coughed blood, a wet rattle in his chest. “Santoro… he already has a man inside. An orderly at St. Jude’s Neurological Pavilion. He’s watching the boy.”

Gabriel dropped the man. He fired a final execution shot into the captain’s chest, ending it.

Gabriel tossed the burner phone to Marco, who was leaning heavily against the SUV fender. “Lock down St. Jude’s immediately,” Gabriel ordered.

Gabriel walked back to the damaged Escalade.

Clara stood in the pouring rain beside the open door. Her custom emerald gown was soaked, the heavy velvet clinging to her skin. The hem was torn, dragging on the wet asphalt. Soot and gunpowder flecked her high cheekbones. But her amber eyes burned with an unbreakable, fearless defiance.

Gabriel stopped in front of her. He looked down at the heavy titanium fire extinguisher resting by her feet.

He dropped his weapon into the shoulder holster.

For the first time since he took over the Syndicate, Gabriel’s cold, sovereign mask completely shattered. The untouchable Don of New York ceased to exist.

His large hands—the same hands that had just executed three men without a heartbeat of hesitation—trembled violently. He reached out and gently cupped Clara’s face. The rough calluses of his thumbs carefully wiped the soot from her cheeks.

He looked into her eyes with raw, breathless adoration. His chest heaved with a ragged, uneven draw of breath. He knew she had just saved his life.

Gabriel pulled her forcefully against his chest. He buried his face in her wet hair. Clara wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, burying her face in the curve of his collarbone. The scorching heat of his body burned through his wet shirt. Their rapid breaths mingled in the cold, salt-tinged drizzle.

Gabriel pulled back just enough to look at her. He turned his head toward Marco and the assembled tactical captains securing the perimeter.

“Marco,” Gabriel roared. His baritone vibrated with world-ending, sovereign fury over the sound of the rain. “Mobilize every crew from Red Hook to Staten Island. Burn every Santoro warehouse. Seize every dock. And lock down St. Jude’s with fifty men. We go to war.”

Gabriel turned his gunmetal eyes back to Clara. He brushed a wet strand of hair from her forehead, his voice dropping into a solemn, unbreakable vow.

“You saved my life tonight, Clara,” Gabriel whispered, sealing the Obsidian Vow. “From this moment on, you are not my fake fiancée. You are the only Queen New York will ever have. And I will burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone touch you or Leo.”
