Chapter 3: The Golden Cage

Claimed by the Mafia King’s Black Card 3 of 6

The four Rossi security operatives moved with military precision. They locked down the threshold, flanked the bronze doors, and confiscated the radio units from the two private security guards before the men could even draw a breath.

Don Gabriel Rossi stepped through the double glass doors.

The atmosphere in the dining room instantly dropped ten degrees. Gabriel wore a bespoke charcoal three-piece Savile Row wool suit. Dark five-o’clock stubble shadowed his chiseled jawline. His gunmetal-gray eyes swept the room, radiating an absolute, sovereign command that crushed the oxygen from the air.

Beside him walked Marco Bellini, his earpiece humming softly, his hand resting near his concealed sidearm. On Gabriel’s other side walked Arthur Sterling, a silver-haired corporate attorney in a pinstripe suit, holding a thick leather legal folio.

In the back of the hall, early lunch patrons and kitchen staff froze in terror.

Claire Dubois dropped her phone onto the mahogany podium. The color instantly drained from her face, leaving her heavy foundation looking like a cracked mask. She frantically adjusted the lapels of her ivory jacket, plastering on a subservient, fawning smile.

She rushed forward, her Louboutins clicking frantically across the marble.

“Mr. Rossi!” Claire gasped, bowing her head slightly. “Please accept my deepest apologies for this disgraceful scene. This waitress, Clara Vance, is a violent thief who destroyed a twelve-thousand-dollar vintage last night. I was just having my security arrest her before lunch service.”

Gabriel did not slow his stride. He did not blink. He walked past Claire Dubois as if she were a smudge of dirt on the glass.

His eyes remained locked exclusively on Clara, who stood rigidly in the center of the room. Her hands rested deep in her coat pockets. She did not back down, holding his predatory gaze with unwavering defiance.

Gabriel stopped two paces away from her. The heavy, synchronized rhythm of his Oxford shoes on the marble ceased. He slowly pulled off his black leather gloves, slipping them into his pocket.

“Did anyone on this property touch you, Clara?” Gabriel asked. His deep baritone dropped into a quiet, focused cadence that commanded the entire room.

Clara held his gaze. “No one touched me. But Claire attempted to destroy an innocent boy to cover her own theft.”

Gabriel nodded slightly. He turned his head a fraction of an inch toward the attorney.

Arthur Sterling stepped forward. He slammed the thick sheaf of notarized deeds onto the maître d’ podium with a heavy, final thud.

“As of 10:45 AM this morning,” Sterling announced, his voice echoing off the high ceilings, “Rossi Harbor Holdings has completed the all-cash acquisition of the 140 Franklin Street commercial real estate, the liquor license, and the operating business of The Obsidian Room.”

Claire Dubois froze. Her manicured fingers began to shake violently.

Gabriel turned to face the manager. His eyes were cold, devoid of any mercy.

“You are fired, Claire,” Gabriel delivered the execution. “Effective immediately. For gross negligence, systemic embezzlement, and threatening a woman under my protection.”

“Embezzlement?” Claire choked out. A dry, pathetic click sounded in her throat. “Mr. Rossi, I swear to you, I have no idea—”

Marco Bellini pulled a folded ledger from his tactical jacket and tossed it onto the podium next to the deeds.

“Two hundred and forty thousand dollars in fraudulent supplier kickbacks,” Marco stated, his voice flat and lethal. “Routed through shell companies linked to Vincent Santoro. You’ve been bleeding the cellar to pay off the cartel.”

Claire stared at the ledger. Her knees buckled slightly. The master keycard lanyard around her neck snapped sharply as Marco reached out and ripped it from her collar.

“You’re stripping me of everything?” Claire shrieked, hysteria breaking her voice. She pointed a trembling finger at Clara. “For her? She’s a filthy Orchard Street waitress! Vincent Santoro will kill you all for this!”

Gabriel gestured to the two operatives by the door. They stepped forward, grabbing Claire by the elbows of her ivory suit. They dragged her backward across the marble. Her Louboutins slipped and scrambled against the stone. Her Birkin bag fell to the floor, spilling lipstick and mints across the wet sidewalk as they threw her out into the cold rain.

The heavy glass doors swung shut. A dead hush fell over the dining room.

Gabriel turned away from the door. He looked toward the kitchen threshold, where Toby Jenkins stood trembling in his oversized busboy apron.

“Marco,” Gabriel said.

“Yes, Boss.”

“Shred the boy’s disciplinary record,” Gabriel ordered, never taking his eyes off Clara. “Promote Toby Jenkins to junior floor manager. Triple his wage and arrange full tuition assistance for his night classes.”

Toby gasped, his hazel eyes widening behind his taped glasses. He clapped his hands over his mouth to muffle a sob.

Gabriel stepped closer to Clara. The heat of his body radiated against the cold draft of the room. He reached slowly toward her coat. His warm, callused fingers brushed the worn wool of her lapel. He slipped his hand into her inner pocket and withdrew the matte titanium Centurion Black Card.

He turned the heavy metal in the light, inspecting the laser-etched edges. He noted the frayed stitching at Clara’s collar and the fierce, unyielding pride in her stance.

He slipped the Black Card deliberately back into her pocket, pressing it flat over her heart.

“Your shift here is finished, Miss Vance,” Gabriel murmured, offering his arm with dark, lethal chivalry. “You are coming with me.”

Clara’s jaw tightened. She did not take his arm. “I didn’t ask for a savior, Mr. Rossi. And I don’t work for free.”

Gabriel’s lips curved with dangerous intrigue. The corner of his mouth twitched in a rare display of genuine amusement.

“I am not offering charity, Clara,” Gabriel said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate rumble. “I am offering a war. And I need a queen.”

“I am a waitress with a sick brother,” Clara countered, her amber eyes flashing. “Not a mafia trophy.”

“We will discuss Leo at my home,” Gabriel murmured. The threat in his tone was laced with raw velvet. “Walk with me, or I will carry you out of this building. The choice is yours.”

Clara stared into his gunmetal eyes. She recognized the absolute certainty of a man who ruled the city. She adjusted her frayed cuffs, turned on her heel, and walked past him toward the doors.

Ten minutes later, Clara sat in the center vehicle of a three-SUV armored Cadillac Escalade convoy. The heavy B6 ballistic doors had sealed shut with a deep hydraulic hiss, plunging the cabin into leather-scented silence. The motorcade accelerated through the rain-slicked streets of Tribeca under high-alert escort.

Across the spacious cabin, Gabriel reviewed a glowing dossier on his tablet. His eyes rested on a faded photograph of a man in welding gear.

Thomas Vance, Master Welder, Red Hook Dry Docks.

Gabriel glanced up, watching Clara check the scratched face of her father’s Timex watch.

“Your father was Thomas Vance,” Gabriel spoke quietly, the heavy vibration of the chassis humming beneath his words. “He built the hulls that carried this harbor. An honest man who never bent his knee to the cartels. It seems the steel runs in the blood.”

Clara stiffened, her fingers tightening over the watch face. He knew everything about her.

The convoy turned off the street, descending a steep concrete ramp into the private subterranean garage of 56 Leonard. Steel blast doors locked into place behind them with a deafening metallic crash. Biometric retinal scanners flashed green as the perimeter cleared.

The SUV stopped. Gabriel opened his door to speak with Marco outside the vehicle.

Before stepping out, Marco turned in the passenger seat to look at Clara. The special ops veteran’s weathered face softened with a grave, sincere look.

“Welcome to the fortress, Signora,” Marco warned quietly. “Don’t try to run. The Don doesn’t take no for an answer.”

Clara looked up at the private gold-paneled elevator doors waiting in the garage. She stepped out of the armored vehicle and walked forward into the gilded cage.
