The Trap

Check Your Closet, Sir 10 of 12

Marcus Ford didn’t love the idea of Madison Cole wearing a wire into a meeting with a man capable of arranging a fatal “accident,” but three years of buried evidence didn’t leave many cleaner options.

“We do this by the book,” he told Adrian, “or we don’t do it at all. I’m calling in a favor — Detective Elena Reyes, financial crimes unit. She still owes me from a case I helped her close before I retired. If Graham says anything usable, it needs to hold up in an actual courtroom, not just satisfy you.”

Adrian agreed, though every part of him wanted something faster, messier, more personal.

Detective Reyes arrived within two days — sharp-eyed, unhurried, visibly unimpressed by the size of the Westwood estate.

“Let’s be clear,” she told Adrian and Madison both, in a private downstairs study. “This isn’t a favor to your family name. If what you’re telling me is true, three respected foundations were defrauded and a woman may have been murdered to keep it quiet. I don’t care how much money is in this house. I care about evidence.”

“Understood,” Adrian said.

Madison, pale but resolved, nodded once. “I want to help. I need to.”

Reyes studied her for a long moment. “You understand wearing a wire doesn’t erase what you already did. Obstruction, falsifying records — you’re not walking away clean, no matter how this ends.”

“I know,” Madison said quietly. “I’d rather be guilty of something I can survive than keep being someone I can’t live with.”

They set the meeting for the following week — Madison requesting a routine sit-down with Victor at his office, ostensibly to finalize wedding-related foundation paperwork before the ceremony everyone still publicly believed was six weeks away.

Reyes wired her carefully, testing the equipment twice.

“Keep him talking about the lake house,” Reyes instructed. “Don’t lead him. Let him fill silences. Guilty men can’t stand silence.”

Madison walked into Victor Graham’s office with her heart hammering hard enough she was certain the microphone would pick up nothing but her own pulse.

“You seemed tense on the phone,” Victor said, watching her settle into the chair across from his desk.

“Wedding stress,” Madison said, forcing a small laugh. “Adrian’s been asking a lot of questions lately. About the foundation. About October.”

Victor’s pen stilled over his desk calendar. “What kind of questions?”

“He found something in Claire’s closet,” Madison said, exactly as rehearsed. “A letter. He hasn’t told me everything, but he mentioned the lake house specifically.” She let her voice tremble — not entirely an act. “Victor, I’m scared. What if he figures out we met there?”

Victor set down his pen with deliberate calm. “Nobody figures out anything,” he said, “as long as everyone continues doing exactly what they’ve done successfully for three years. Which is nothing.”

“But if Claire wrote something down–“

“Claire,” Victor said, and something cold slid into his voice, “made the mistake of thinking a foundation board seat gave her authority she didn’t actually have. I gave her every opportunity to let it go quietly.”

“Every opportunity?”

Victor’s eyes flicked up, sharp and sudden, as though realizing he’d said slightly more than intended. Then, smoothly, he recovered.

“I mean I offered to walk her through the accounting discrepancies myself,” he said. “She wasn’t interested in explanations. She wanted to involve outside counsel. That would have been extremely damaging, for everyone involved. Including you.”

“So what happened?” Madison asked carefully. “That night. What actually happened?”

Victor studied her for a long moment — long enough that Madison felt certain, with sick clarity, that he could hear her heartbeat from across the desk.

“You don’t need the details,” he said finally. “You needed a solution, and I provided one. The same as I’m providing one now, as long as you stay calm and stop letting Adrian Westwood’s grief turn into a liability for both of us.”

It wasn’t a confession. Not cleanly. Not in the courtroom-ready language Reyes had hoped for.

But it was close enough to send a chill down Madison’s spine, and apparently close enough for Reyes too — because thirty seconds later, the study door opened without warning, and Detective Reyes stepped through it, badge already raised.

“Victor Graham,” she said. “I need you to step away from the desk.”

Victor’s composure didn’t crack immediately. Lawyers rarely panicked the way ordinary people did.

“Detective,” he said smoothly, rising, buttoning his jacket. “I assume you have a warrant, or a very good explanation for interrupting a private legal consultation.”

“I have three years of falsified foundation records, a buried accident report, and a recording of you just now telling this woman you ‘provided a solution’ to a problem named Claire Westwood,” Reyes said. “I think that gives me plenty.”

For the first time since Adrian had known him, something in Victor Graham’s carefully maintained composure genuinely broke — not into panic, but into something colder, more calculating, the look of a man recalculating every angle at once.

His eyes moved past Reyes, to the doorway behind her, where Adrian stood watching.

“You should have let this stay in the past,” Victor said quietly.

“You should have let my wife live long enough to put it there herself,” Adrian said.
