The Cedar Door

Check Your Closet, Sir 2 of 12

Adrian took the stairs two at a time. Behind him, Natalie followed without a word, her heels forgotten somewhere near the ballroom doors. Rachel carried Emma against her hip, the child’s stuffed rabbit dangling from one small fist.

Nobody spoke until they reached the second-floor landing.

Claire’s dressing room had not been touched in three years. Adrian had told the staff to leave it exactly as it was — her perfume still on the vanity, her reading glasses still folded beside a novel she never finished. He unlocked the door with a key he had not used since the funeral.

The room smelled of cedar and dust and, faintly, of the gardenia perfume Claire used to wear.

Emma pointed toward the far wall, where a row of evening gowns hung untouched behind a sheet of garment plastic.

“Behind the blue one,” she said.

Adrian pushed the dresses aside. His hands were not steady. Behind the third gown, exactly where he had built it seven years ago, was a narrow cedar panel disguised as part of the closet’s back wall — a compartment only three people alive were supposed to know existed.

Claire. Adrian. And, eventually, Madison.

He pressed the hidden catch. The panel swung open with a soft click.

Inside, on a velvet-lined shelf, sat a red leather box.

Adrian’s throat closed. He recognized it instantly — Claire’s Cartier case, the one police told him had likely been destroyed in the crash, thrown from the wreckage and lost in the ravine, along with her wedding ring.

He reached for it, hands shaking, and lifted the lid.

Claire’s wedding ring sat exactly where it should have been three years ago — resting in its slot, untouched, catching the light exactly the way it had the day he put it on her finger.

Beneath the ring was a folded piece of paper.

Natalie made a small, broken sound behind him. “That’s her handwriting,” she whispered.

Adrian unfolded it.

If you’re reading this, something happened to me before I could tell you myself. Ask Madison what she knows about the foundation numbers. Ask her why she was at the lake house in October. I didn’t want to believe it either.

I love you. Please believe I wasn’t being paranoid.

— C.

The paper suddenly felt heavier than anything Adrian had ever held.

Rachel, still holding Emma, took a step back toward the door.

“Rachel.” Adrian’s voice cracked. “How did your daughter know this box existed?”

Rachel’s face went the color of the wall behind her. “I don’t know,” she said. Too fast. Too rehearsed.

Adrian looked at her for a long moment. “You’re lying too.”
