Chapter 5: The Gala Showdown & The Boardroom Execution
Inside the Grand Ballroom at The Plaza Hotel, forty-foot ceilings and Belle Époque gilded moldings sparkled under tiered crystal chandeliers. The scent of vintage champagne, expensive perfume, and fresh white lilies saturated the air. Five hundred elite guests, alongside media correspondents from CNBC, Bloomberg, and The New York Times, watched the center stage.
Blinding glares of spotlights reflected off Marcus Reed’s gold Rolex and pomaded blonde hair. A visual loop of AetherGrid’s dynamic interface played on the fifty-foot LED arena screen behind him. Marcus stood in his tailored Italian tuxedo, delivering a rehearsed, arrogant keynote.
In the front-row VIP box, Alasdair Reed raised his crystal champagne flute, nodding approvingly to Wall Street titans.
Marcus leaned over the podium, smirking. “We at Reed Logistics have spent eighteen months engineering the future of global commerce. I personally directed the architectural UI of AetherGrid to eliminate urban freight latency by forty percent. Tonight, we open our platform to the world.”
The ballroom erupted in enthusiastic applause.
Suddenly, the heavy thud of the brass-and-gold ballroom doors swinging open silenced the room. A gust of cold night air from the foyer cut through the perfumed heat. Five hundred guests stopped mid-conversation, turning toward the grand center aisle.
Ethan Hawthorne entered. Towering at 6’4″ in a bespoke black tuxedo with satin peak lapels, he walked with absolute authority. On his arm was Clara Vance—stunning, regal, and untouchable in her backless midnight-blue silk gown, the 15-carat sapphire necklace glittering under the chandeliers. She walked with effortless poise, her eyes fixed directly on Marcus.
Guests gasped. Journalists scrambled to aim telephoto lenses. Champagne glasses froze in mid-air.
“Is that Hawthorne? With the designer from the morning tabloids?” a guest whispered.
On stage, Marcus turned ghost-white, stammering into the live microphone. “I… as I was saying… our next-generation—” Feedback screeched through the speakers. Sweat soaked through his collar. He pointed a trembling finger at Clara, shrieking. “What are you doing? I’m Marcus Reed! Get them out of my ballroom!”
Four private venue guards moved into the aisle. Instantly, Liam Sterling and six imposing Hawthorne operatives stepped forward, physically walling off the guards in seconds. Up in the mezzanine AV suite, Liam’s tech operatives locked down the master control booth, overriding local boards.
Ethan and Clara walked steadily to the foot of the stage.
Ethan’s voice cut through the cavernous room like an icy blade. “This isn’t your ballroom, Marcus. And that isn’t your software.”
Ethan pulled a sleek matte-black titanium transmitter from his tuxedo pocket and pressed the master override.
A deep, low-frequency hum resonated as the ballroom video processing matrix shifted inputs. The 50-foot screen and thirty perimeter satellite monitors blacked out. A collective intake of breath swept the room.
“Let’s show Manhattan who truly built AetherGrid—and what you did to steal it,” Ethan declared.
The 50-foot LED display blazed to life, splitting into three synchronized, massive 4K feeds.
On the left screen, Clara’s SHA-256 cryptographic root certificate (`CV-AETHER-2026`), timestamped 18 months ago, displayed alongside a live build failure on Marcus’s deck: “AUTHORIZATION SIGNATURE REQUIRED: CLARA VANCE.”
The center screen flashed certified Grand Cayman SWIFT wire transfers, documenting Marcus embezzling $20,450,000 from Reed Logistics to “Vanguard Holdings LLC” to cover illegal gambling debts.
The right screen looped the unedited 4K security footage from Marcus’s Park Avenue hallway. The room watched in horror as Marcus pinned Clara against the wall, ripped her emerald gown, and Clara bravely fought him off.
The graphic, harrowing audio of Marcus screaming and attacking Clara echoed through the 10,000-watt sound system. Press strobes fired rapidly, blinding the contorted face of the heir.
Marcus spun around, staring at the footage of his own violence. He stumbled backward, knocking over the podium with a deafening crash. Grabbing the dangling microphone, veins bulging in his neck, he completely lost his mind on live international television.
“She stole it from me! She’s a nobody! I made her! I can do whatever the fuck I want to her! Father, tell them! Tell these bastards who we are!” Marcus screamed hysterically.
In the VIP box, the crystal flute slipped from Alasdair Reed’s grip, shattering on the hardwood floor. He clutched his chest, his face pale as ash. “You… you destroyed us…”
Down the grand center aisle, six NYPD detectives and four federal agents from SDNY marched toward the stage with badges raised.
“Marcus Reed, Southern District of New York,” Detective Rossi called out. “Do not move.”
