Chapter 1: The Broken Velvet & The Boardroom Collapse

Caught by the Ruthless Billionaire 1 of 6

The howling skyscraper canyons of East 62nd Street funneled the violently swirling whiteout blizzard, turning the sub-zero asphalt into a sheet of black ice. Clara Vance sprinted through the stinging sleet, her bare feet cut by street salt, jagged ice crystals, and frozen asphalt slush. She clutched the torn front of her emerald velvet gown to keep from exposing herself, the biting sub-zero wind burning like razor blades against her wet skin. A stinging laceration along her left collarbone seeped dark crimson droplets, freezing into crystals on the ripped silk bodice.

Forty yards back, the heavy rubber-soled boots of her pursuers crunched aggressively.

“Reed wants her alive! Get the master drive from her!” Guard Novak’s voice was muffled through the storm, but the intent was clear.

Clara’s breath came in jagged, burning gasps; her vision tunneled from cold and adrenaline. Through the dense curtain of snow, she spotted the brass exterior lamps and wrought-iron gates of The Hawthorne Club—the only illuminated haven on the block. She slipped on a patch of black ice, catching herself against the frozen iron railing, and darted past a startled uniformed doorman. Hurling her body through the revolving brass doors into the lobby, she dove into the private executive elevator just as the brass doors chimed open.

She slammed her palm against the top illuminated button as the doors slid shut, locking out the pursuing guards. Staring at her bleeding hands, her teeth chattered violently. “Not this time, Marcus… never again.”

On the top-floor penthouse of The Hawthorne Club, the Salon Privé was a sanctuary of acoustic isolation and dark herringbone oak. A blazing white Carrara marble hearth crackled, filling the room with the aroma of peaty 25-year Macallan, polished cedarwood, English tobacco, and expensive cashmere. The soft, rhythmic click of a gold Montblanc pen against burled walnut anchored the room’s tension. It was a stark contrast to the muffled roaring blizzard outside the triple-paned leaded windows.

Ethan Hawthorne stood at the head of the sixteen-seat conference table, towering over four nervous silver-haired Wall Street investment bankers. At 6’4″, the bronze-brown titan commanded the $100M distressed debt buyout in bespoke charcoal wool. He reviewed an encrypted tablet displaying Reed Logistics’ defaulted commercial debt.

Liam Sterling stood against the mahogany wainscoting, his encrypted earpiece glowing faint blue.

“Reed Logistics defaulted on twenty million in commercial paper last Tuesday, Arthur,” Ethan stated, his cold, measured baritone leaving no room for negotiation. “You’re offering me forty cents on the dollar. I’ll give you twenty-two, or you can watch them file Chapter 11 by Friday.”

Arthur Vance-Smith wiped sweat with a linen handkerchief. “Ethan, please. Alasdair Reed is looking for an emergency recapitalization partner—”

“Alasdair Reed raised a reckless fool for a son and mismanaged a century-old fleet,” Ethan cut him off. “My offer expires in ten minutes.”

Before Arthur could formulate a response, a violent splintering crack shattered the executive serenity. The brass latch of the double mahogany doors fractured. A gust of sub-zero winter sleet and icy air invaded the warm, cedar-scented room, bringing with it the metallic scent of copper blood cutting through the amber aroma of scotch.

The heavy doors slammed open. Clara stumbled two frantic steps across the threshold. Her vision faded, her legs collapsing under her torn emerald skirt.

Ethan reacted before the bankers could even stand. He crossed fifteen feet of herringbone floor in two swift, predatory strides. His arm hooked around Clara’s waist inches before her head struck the Carrara marble floor; his broad chest absorbed her weight.

Clara looked up through frost-crusted eyelashes into Ethan’s piercing obsidian eyes. The sensation of overwhelming, radiating body heat met her freezing, frost-bitten skin.

Ethan’s gaze swept across her battered body, taking in the bloody collarbone, the ragged velvet, and the unmistakable dark purple fingerprint bruises circling both wrists.

Clara clutched his charcoal lapel, whispering through blue-tinted, shivering lips. “Please… he’s coming…”

Ethan’s warm thumb instantly rested over her carotid pulse point. His voice dropped into a low, resonant rumble. “I have you. You’re done running.”

In a single fluid movement, Ethan stripped off his bespoke cashmere overcoat. The heavy, whisper-soft drape of midnight-charcoal wrapped over her freezing bare skin. He securely tucked the thick lapels around her throat and bare shoulders, enveloped in the scent of sandalwood, amber, and masculine warmth.

He lifted her effortlessly into his arms, carrying her to the deep leather armchair beside the roaring hearth. Turning his back to shield her from the room, his expression hardened to pure granite.

The terrified bankers scrambled, chairs scraping frantically as they packed their leather briefcases. Liam immediately stepped to the elevator vestibule, his hand hovering over the sidearm concealed beneath his suit.

“Out,” Ethan ordered the frozen bankers, his voice chilling the room. “Every single one of you. Forget what you saw tonight, or find new careers by sunrise.”

“Of course, Mr. Hawthorne. Immediately,” Arthur stammered, scrambling toward the service door.

Ethan turned to Liam. “Lock the floor down. Retinal override on the elevator. Tell Dr. Harrison to prep the clinic in TriBeCa.”

“On it, boss,” Liam confirmed.

Violent pounding echoed on the outer mahogany double doors. Marcus Reed’s arrogant, panting voice filtered through the doorway. Clara stiffened in the leather chair, her pupils dilating in terror, knuckles whitening around Ethan’s coat.

Ethan walked to Clara first, placing his large, warm hand over her trembling knuckles, anchoring her with a steady look. Then, he moved to the heavy double doors, pulling them open just enough to block the six-foot frame with his massive shoulders.

Marcus Reed stood in the corridor in an unbuttoned Tom Ford dinner jacket, disheveled blonde hair, flanked by two panting, bruised guards. He sneered until his icy-blue eyes met Ethan’s immovable obsidian stare.

“Hawthorne? What the hell—listen, that girl in there is Clara Vance,” Marcus panted, trying to summon patrician arrogance. “My fiancée. She’s had an unstable psychological breakdown and stole confidential Reed Logistics drives. Hand her over right now and we’ll forget this happened.”

Ethan stepped half an inch forward, looking down from his 6’4″ height with lethal, icy contempt. His voice vibrated through the corridor.

“Step one foot across this threshold, Reed, and I will erase you and your family by morning.”
