Chapter 3: The Impostor’s Plot
The guest suites of the Sunfang Clan’s royal pavilion smelled of suffocating rosewater and burnt wolfbane.
Princess Lyra stood before her full-length obsidian mirror, her blood-red painted claws digging so deeply into the mahogany vanity that the polished wood groaned. In the reflection, her sharp ice-blue eyes burned with venom. Her golden blonde hair, usually styled in flawless aristocratic weaves, hung loose over her silk robe, tossing violently as she whirled toward the shadows of her chamber.
“One hundred percent,” Lyra hissed, her voice a jagged whisper that carried the heat of Sunfang flame. “The High Priest’s sacred stone flared gold! Not a trace of doubt! That filthy stray’s brat carries Kael’s royal bloodline!”
From the darkened corner of the room, Elder Vane stepped forward. His grey beard was trim, his Silvermoon council robes heavy with silver threading, but his eyes gleamed with the unmistakable greed of a bought man.
“Calm yourself, Princess,” Vane urged, keeping his tone low. “The Council of Elders is in turmoil. Half of them are entranced by the boy’s golden eyes, but the other half are terrified of taking in a rogue mother with no lineage records. A stray wolf cannot sit upon the Silvermoon throne as Luna. The nobility will not allow it.”
“Kael will allow it!” Lyra snapped, her crimson lips pulling back to reveal sharp, glistening fangs. Her wolf clawed at the walls of her mind, enraged by the public humiliation. “Did you not see the way he looked at her at the bloodline stone? For six years, I have smiled at his cold face, bribed his pack elders, and played the dutiful noble betrothed! I forged prophecy charms to convince this realm that Sunfang and Silvermoon were destined to unite! And now a nameless vagrant walks into the capital with a five-year-old bastard, and Kael throws six years of political alliance into the dust!”
“Then we make sure she does not survive the week,” Elder Vane said coldly, reaching into the inner fold of his mantle. He withdrew a flat wooden box sealed with black wax. “The grand feast is tonight. Alpha Kael has summoned the entire noble court to officially present the young prince. It is the perfect stage.”
Lyra took the box. When she snapped the clasp open, two distinct items rested inside velvet cutouts.
The first was a parchment scroll bound in cracked leather, bearing the forged wax seal of the Bloodfang Rogue Coalition—the most vicious syndicate of outcast wolves on the continent. The text inside detailed a treasonous plot to infiltrate the Silvermoon Royal Citadel, assassinate the Alpha King, and sell the pack’s ancestral territory to rogue warlords. Seraphina’s full name was signed in dark crimson ink at the bottom.
“Forged spy documents,” Lyra whispered, a slow, malicious smile curving her lips. “Planted in her private quarters.”
“During the feast, while the court is distracted, my guards will perform a ‘routine security sweep’ of the guest pavilion,” Vane explained, his voice dripping with sinister satisfaction. “When those documents are brought before the Council, even Kael’s Alpha authority will not be able to shield a proven rogue traitor from immediate execution.”
Lyra’s manicured claw stroked the second item in the box—a tiny, unlabeled vial filled with a clear, odorless liquid.
“And if Kael hesitates?” Lyra asked, her ice-blue eyes flashing with ruthless intent. “If his foolish mate bond blinds him to her ‘treason’?”
“That is Sunfang Shade-Poison,” Vane replied softly. “Formulated by your clan’s master alchemists. Odorless, tasteless, and utterly fatal to young wolf cubs whose regeneration has not fully matured. A single drop in the boy’s goblet tonight, and the golden-eyed heir will sleep forever before the third course is served.”
Lyra closed the box with a crisp snap, her laughter echoing against the marble walls. “A double trap. If the treason trial does not break her, the loss of her cub will destroy her soul. By tomorrow morning, the stray will be dead or chained in the dungeons, and Kael will have no choice but to return to my arms.”
Across the royal compound, in the sun-dappled courtyard of the High Guest Pavilion, the atmosphere was entirely different.
The afternoon air was crisp, carrying the soothing scent of ancient moon-pines, wild white orchids, and crystal stream water. Inside the spacious chamber, five-year-old Leo sat on the edge of a massive velvet bed, his small boots dangling as he eagerly adjusted his tiny tunic.
“Mommy, look!” Leo chirped, clutching his favorite carved wooden wolf in one hand while using the other to point at his chest. “The silver buttons match the big castle banners! Am I a real knight now?”
Seraphina smiled softly, though her violet-blue eyes remained guarded. She knelt before her son, adjusting his collar with steady, delicate hands. Beneath her heavy linen tunic, the ancient moon mark beneath her collarbone throbbed with a faint, warm pulse—a silent reaction to the heavy lunar energy saturating the palace.
“You are my little knight,” Seraphina said gently, brushing a dark curly lock from his forehead. “But remember what we talked about, Leo. In this castle, you must stay close to me. Do not run into the halls alone, and do not take food or drinks from anyone unless I check it first.”
Leo tilted his head, his big, expressive hazel eyes widening. “Even from the big Alpha with the dark hair? The one with the golden eyes like mine?”
Seraphina’s breath hitched slightly. Images of Kael’s raw, possessive gaze at the Bloodline Ceremony flashed through her mind. Five years of surviving in the harsh human border towns had taught her to trust no one—least of all powerful Alphas who commanded armies with a single word. Yet, when Kael had dropped to his knees before Leo yesterday, his voice cracking with undeniable paternal devotion, her hardened heart had stumbled.
“Especially in a place full of strangers, sweetie,” Seraphina whispered softly. “Packs have many rules, and not everyone is happy that we are here.”
“I am happy you are here.”
The deep, resonant baritone echoed from the open archway, sending an electric shiver straight down Seraphina’s spine.
She stood up instantly, stepping instinctively in front of Leo as her wolf senses flared.
Alpha Kael stood in the doorway. He was clad in a tailored black royal tunic embroidered with silver wolf crests, his broad shoulders filling the entryway. His intense obsidian hair was pushed back, framing a sharp, sculpted jawline, and his golden eyes glowed with a warmth reserved only for the two people in this room. The rich, intoxicating scent of crushed cedar, wild ozone, and dark winter rain flooded the chamber, instantly overwhelming Seraphina’s senses.
Leo’s small wolf ears suddenly popped out from his dark curls, twitching in excitement. “Big Alpha!”
Kael’s stern face melted into a soft, breathtaking smile. He stepped into the room, bypassing the formal distance expected of a monarch, and dropped to one knee before the boy.
“I brought something for my prince,” Kael said softly. From his pocket, he produced a small, exquisite brooch crafted from polished silver and midnight-blue lapis lazuli—a miniature version of the Royal Silvermoon Crest.
Leo gasped, his hazel eyes igniting into brilliant molten gold. “For me?”
“For you,” Kael affirmed, gently pinning the brooch over Leo’s heart. “As long as you wear this, every guard, noble, and warrior in the Silvermoon Realm knows you are under my personal protection. No one will ever dare disrespect you again.”
Leo beamed, puffing out his chest with childish pride. “Look, Mommy! I’m royal now!”
Seraphina watched the exchange, her pulse thumping wildly against her ribs. The magnetic force of their fated mate bond pulled at her soul like an invisible chain, heavy and terrifyingly sweet. She fought to keep her tone cool. “You shouldn’t shower him with grand gifts, Alpha Kael. He is used to a simple life. We came to the capital only for his medicine.”
Kael stood up to his full 6’3″ height. The playful softness vanished from his eyes, replaced by an intense, unyielding heat as his gaze locked onto Seraphina. He stepped closer, closing the distance between them until she could feel the radiating warmth of his body.
“His name is Leo. He is my son,” Kael said, his voice dropping into a low, possessive murmur that vibrated in her chest. “And you are Seraphina. My fated mate. Six years ago, you vanished into the dark after one Blood Moon night, leaving me with nothing but your lingering scent of white lotus and an aching void in my chest. I spent six years searching every territory on this continent for you.”
Seraphina took half a step back, her violet eyes flashing molten silver as her inner wolf stirred violently beneath her skin. “I was an outcast stray wolf, Kael! Five years ago, your pack elders made it clear that strays have no place in the Silvermoon hierarchy. If I had stayed, they would have stolen my baby or driven us to slaughter! I raised Leo alone in the cold outer towns!”
Regret, raw and agonizing, flared in Kael’s golden eyes. He reached out, his broad hand hovering just inches from her cheek, desperate to touch her yet respecting her boundary.
“I did not know you carried my cub,” Kael swore, his voice laced with the absolute gravity of an Alpha oath. “I did not know the elders threatened you. But I am Alpha King now. I have purged the rogue warlords, consolidated the packs, and crushed those who dishonored our laws. No one—not the Council of Elders, not the Sunfang Clan, and not the shadows of the past—will ever tear us apart again. I swear it on my blood and my wolf.”
Seraphina held his gaze, her heart slamming against her ribs. The sheer sincerity in his voice threatened to break down the iron walls she had built around her heart for six long years. But before she could speak, the heavy brass bell of the central citadel chimed three times, echoing across the palace grounds.
The Grand Welcoming Feast was about to begin.
Kael offered his arm to Seraphina, his golden eyes burning with quiet triumph. “Come. Tonight, the entire realm will know that the Crown Prince and his mother have returned home.”
The Silvermoon Grand Feast Hall was a triumph of ancient wolf architecture. High vaulted stone ceilings rose dozens of feet above polished white marble floors. Dozens of glowing crystal chandeliers hung suspended by silver chains, casting warm, luminous light over long banquet tables laden with roasted meats, spiced game, exotic fruits, and decanters of shimmering moon-berry wine. Silken banners bearing the silver wolf of Silvermoon and the golden sun of Sunfang draped the high stone pillars.
Hundreds of nobles, pack chieftains, and high elders filled the hall, dressed in rich velvet robes and fur-lined mantles. But despite the festive music played by the palace minstrels, a tense, whispering hush rippled through the crowd as the grand double doors swung open.
“Presenting His Supreme Highness, Alpha King Kael!” the herald’s voice bellowed across the hall. “And presenting Prince Leo of the Royal Bloodline, accompanied by the Lady Seraphina!”
Kael walked into the hall with grand, regal steps, his posture commanding absolute reverence. At his right side walked Seraphina, her dark hair styled elegantly, revealing the long, graceful curve of her neck. Though she wore a dark velvet gown provided by the palace, her upright posture and piercing violet eyes radiated an aura of quiet power that silenced the snickering noble ladies instantly. Walking proudly between them was little Leo, holding Kael’s hand with his small fingers, his silver crest sparkling under the chandelier light.
A wave of low gasps echoed through the noble ranks.
“Look at the child’s eyes…” whispered an Ironclaw elder. “Pure royal gold! The bloodline stone did not lie!”
“But the woman… she has no pack lineage! She is a stray from the fringe border!” murmured a highborn lady, fanning herself nervously. “How can Alpha Kael bring a stray into the high court?”
Near the head of the royal dais sat Princess Lyra. She was breathtakingly alluring in a low-cut crimson silk gown that mirrored the fiery reputation of the Sunfang Clan. Her golden blonde hair was piled high with jeweled pins, and her crimson lipstick sparkled under the light. But beneath her serene, honeyed smile, her manicured claws gripped her silver goblet so tightly the metal bent slightly under her strength.
Beside her, Elder Vane caught her eye and gave a subtle, almost imperceptible nod.
The guards are moving to her chambers now, the nod communicated. The forged treason documents will be found within minutes.
Lyra’s smile widened with venomous satisfaction. She stood up from her seat, raising her silver goblet high to draw the attention of the entire grand hall.
“My Lord Alpha! Honored elders of the Silvermoon Council!” Lyra’s sweet, melodious voice projected effortless charm across the room. “As Princess of the Sunfang Clan, I request the privilege of raising the first toast of the evening!”
Kael halted at the center of the dais, his golden eyes narrowing slightly as he looked at Lyra. “Speak, Princess Lyra.”
Lyra stepped forward, her ice-blue eyes sweeping over Seraphina with practiced condescension before settling on little Leo with fake warmth. “We have all witnessed the miraculous return of Alpha Kael’s bloodline. Though Lady Seraphina comes from humble… nameless origins, the Sunfang Clan honors the strength of the royal bloodline. To welcome our new young prince, I have ordered the palace servants to prepare a special royal nectar, blessed by Sunfang priestesses for health and rapid wolf growth!”
At her signal, a young servant clad in silver-and-gold banquet livery stepped forward from the side archway. He carried a silver tray upon which rested a small, gilded crystal goblet filled with a rich, shimmering purple moon-berry liquid.
The servant bowed deeply, approaching the royal table where Leo was being seated.
“A toast to Prince Leo!” Lyra declared loudly, raising her cup high. “May his bloodline prosper, and may peace reign between our packs!”
The assembled nobles raised their glasses, cheering in chorus. “To the Prince!”
Leo looked up at the glittering crystal goblet being placed before him, his eyes lighting up. “Is that sweet juice for me, Mommy?”
Seraphina leaned down to check the goblet, her hand reaching out toward the crystal rim. But the moment her fingers hovered an inch above the crystal rim, her dormant wolf bloodline surged violently beneath her skin. A sharp, icy shock of foreboding stabbed through her chest.
Danger.
Her motherly instincts flared into full alarm. She caught a microscopic discoloration—a faint, oily sheen swirling on the surface of the purple nectar.
At the exact same instant, Alpha Kael’s nose twitched. His heightened royal Alpha senses picked up an almost invisible scent hidden beneath the sweet scent of berries—an acrid, metallic undertone of Sunfang Shade-Poison.
Kael’s golden eyes flared into a terrifying, molten crimson. A low, thunderous growl began to rumble deep within his massive chest, vibrating the heavy oak table and sending a wave of absolute Alpha pressure crashing through the grand hall.
“Stop,” Kael commanded, his voice echoing like thunder before the servant could touch the goblet.
Lyra’s breath caught in her throat, her fake smile freezing as the hall fell into dead, suffocating silence.
Seraphina slammed her hand down onto the servant’s wrist, her violet eyes turning molten silver with fierce maternal rage. “Touch that cup again, and I will tear your arm off.”
Across the hall, the heavy oak doors burst open, and a troop of Silvermoon palace guards rushed in, led by a lieutenant aligned with Elder Vane, holding a rolled parchment scroll high in his hand.
“Alpha King! Emergency!” the lieutenant shouted. “A search of Lady Seraphina’s guest quarters has uncovered secret rogue intelligence!”
The trap had sprung on both sides at once. The hall erupted into chaos.
