Chapter 4: The Scorned Vow

Vow of Blood and Vengeance 4 of 4

The Grand Executive Conference Hall on the sixty-fifth floor of Vance Conglomerate Tower was filled with blinding light. Over forty international news crews, including *Bloomberg*, *CNBC*, and *The Wall Street Journal*, had set up camera rigs along the perimeter. Strobe flashes flared continuously against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, illuminating the forty-foot polished mahogany boardroom table at the center of the hall.

Today was the public signing ceremony for Apex Capital’s five-hundred-million-dollar emergency debt bailout of Sterling Corporation and Vance Conglomerate.

At the head of the table sat Victoria Vance. Dressed in an ivory Chanel suit with gold buttons and her signature South Sea pearl necklace, she projected an image of absolute corporate resilience. To the financial media, Vance Conglomerate had successfully weathered a speculative short attack and secured institutional backing from Zurich’s most prestigious venture capital firm. The market had already begun to recover, rising four percent in pre-market trading.

Beside her sat Julian Sterling. Though dressed impeccably in a dark navy Armani suit, his cheeks were hollow, and heavy dark circles shadowed his eyes. He had spent the last seventy-two hours consuming sleeping pills and scotch, terrified by Aria Cross’s ominous warnings. Yet, looking out at the sea of flashing cameras, a false sense of security had begun to warm his chest once again.

*Once this contract is signed,* Julian reassured himself, clutching his Montblanc pen, *the cash hits our accounts. The market closes at four o’clock today, the IPO goes live on Monday, and Aria Cross will just be another minority bondholder.*

“Ladies and gentlemen of the press,” Victoria spoke into the microphone on her lapel, her voice smooth, regal, and resonant. “Today marks a momentous triumph of corporate synergy. Vance Conglomerate, alongside our esteemed merger partner Sterling Corporation, is pleased to announce a strategic liquidity partnership with Apex Capital. This five-hundred-million-dollar injection reaffirms market confidence in our upcoming initial public offering…”

At precisely three-forty-five PM, fifteen minutes before the closing bell, the heavy oak doors at the back of the hall clicked open.

A quiet hush swept through the room as media cameras swung around in unison.

Aria Cross entered. She was a vision of lethal elegance, dressed in a tailored jet-black double-breasted suit with silk lapels that emphasized her commanding presence. Walking beside her, tall and imposing in a dark charcoal bespoke suit, was Marcus Thorne. The CEO of Thorne Enterprises sat quietly in the reserved executive observer section, his dark gray eyes fixed on Victoria Vance with a calm, predatory stillness.

Aria walked down the center aisle, her heels striking the marble floor with absolute authority. Two Apex Capital corporate attorneys followed closely behind, carrying heavy leather briefcases.

“Managing Director Cross,” Victoria greeted her warmly for the cameras, motioning toward the empty leather armchair across from Julian. “We are delighted you could join us for the formal execution of the bond agreement.”

Aria sat down calmly, placing her slender hands flat on the polished table. “It is my pleasure, Mrs. Vance. Apex Capital is always present for the final settlement.”

Julian forced a smile, sliding the leather-bound contract folder across the mahogany surface toward her. “The documents have been pre-cleared by our legal counsel, MD Cross. We simply need your final signature alongside mine, and the wire transfer can be authorized before the four o’clock deadline.”

Aria glanced down at the document, then looked up at Julian. Her icy gray eyes held a look of profound, chilling pity.

“Actually, Mr. Sterling,” Aria said softly, her voice carrying clearly into the directional microphones of the press corps. “Due to market volatility over the last forty-eight hours, Apex Capital’s investment committee issued a minor structural amendment to the covenants. My attorneys have updated the execution folder.”

Before Julian or Victoria could object, Aria’s senior attorney stepped forward, retrieved the original folder from Julian’s hands, and replaced it with a thick, crimson-bound leather binder stamped with the gold seal of Apex Capital.

Victoria’s eyes narrowed instantly. “What is the meaning of this, MD Cross? We agreed on the terms of the convertible bond yesterday!”

“The terms remain fundamentally identical, Mrs. Vance,” Aria explained smoothly, leaning back in her chair with complete composure. “Except for a standard institutional clause regarding debt-for-equity default triggers in the event of pre-existing material misrepresentation. As long as Sterling Corporation has maintained honest accounting ledgers, the clause is entirely dormant.”

Victoria glanced at the clock on the wall: **3:54 PM**. Six minutes remained before the exchange closed. If the contract was not signed and broadcast before four o’clock, the prime brokers would automatically initiate forced liquidation on Sterling Corp’s collateralized debt.

Victoria leaned close to Julian, her voice a fierce, desperate whisper. “Sign it. We have no time to re-audit. Our ledgers were scrubbed five years ago. She has nothing.”

Julian’s hand was shaking as he flipped to the final signature page of the crimson binder. He looked across the table at Aria. She was watching him with a faint, enigmatic smile—the same smile Evelyn used to give him when she had solved a complex chess puzzle before he even saw the trap.

Panic flared in his chest, but the ticking clock drove him forward. **3:57 PM**.

Julian pressed the tip of his Montblanc pen to the paper and scrawled his signature across the line.

“Done,” Julian exhaled, letting out a long breath of relief as he slid the crimson binder back to Aria. “The agreement is executed.”

Aria took the signed document. She did not sign her own name immediately. Instead, she picked up her sleek black pen, gently capped it, and placed it down beside the folder.

The clock on the wall struck **4:00 PM**. A loud, resonance chime echoed from the television monitors as the Riverdale Stock Exchange closing bell rang.

“Thank you, Mr. Sterling,” Aria said calmly. She stood up, smoothing the lapels of her black jacket. Then, she walked directly to the central press podium, brushing past Victoria Vance.

“MD Cross?” Victoria called out, her voice sharpening with sudden unease. “What are you doing? The press conference is concluded.”

Aria adjusted the podium microphone. Her icy gray eyes swept over the fifty live broadcast cameras.

“Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,” Aria began, her voice echoing with crystal clarity across international television networks. “At four o’clock today, Julian Sterling, CEO of Sterling Corporation, formally executed Apex Capital’s Crimson Covenant Agreement. Under Clause 14-B of this legally binding contract, Apex Capital was granted instant Debt-for-Equity conversion authority in the event that forensic evidence of corporate fraud was presented prior to market close.”

A wave of shocked gasps rippled through the press corps. Camera flashes began to explode like lightning bolts.

Julian sprang out of his chair. “What?! That’s insane! What are you talking about?!”

“Shut her down!” Victoria shrieked at the sound technicians, her regal composure completely shattering. “Cut her microphone! Security, remove this woman!”

Before Vance security guards could move, six towering private operatives from Thorne Enterprises stepped into the room, blocking the security detail with immovable authority. Marcus Thorne stood up slowly from the observer section, folding his arms across his chest with a cold, triumphant smirk.

“Do not touch the podium,” Marcus declared, his deep voice commanding absolute obedience in the hall. “MD Cross has the floor.”

Aria tapped a button on a small remote control in her hand.

Behind her, the massive eighty-inch high-definition presentation screen—intended to display Vance Conglomerate’s IPO slides—flashed blue, then transferred directly to a live server stream originating from Thorne Enterprises’ intelligence network.

“On the screen behind me,” Aria announced calmly, “you will find complete forensic audit records retrieved from Sterling Corporation’s offshore accounts in Liechtenstein and the Cayman Islands. These records detail thirty million dollars of embezzled Vance family trust capital, illegally funneled by Julian Sterling five years ago to establish Sterling Corp.”

The screen displayed crystal-clear banking slips, wire transfer receipts bearing Julian Sterling’s personal digital signature, and shell company registry documents.

“No… no, no, no!” Julian screamed, his face turning deathly pale as he stared at the screen in horror. “That’s confidential! That’s stolen data!”

“Furthermore,” Aria continued, her voice cutting through the rising chaos like a steel blade, “we have uploaded forensic mechanical reports detailing the deliberate sabotage of Evelyn Vance’s vehicle five years ago—including the electronic authorization codes issued from Julian Sterling’s personal mobile device on the night of her disappearance.”

The press hall erupted into absolute bedlam. Reporters stood on chairs, shouting questions into their microphones, while camera lenses zoomed in on Julian’s terrified face.

“Under Clause 14-B,” Aria concluded, her gray eyes locking onto Julian with devastating triumph, “Apex Capital hereby declares Sterling Corporation in immediate default. Effective immediately, Apex Capital assumes fifty-one percent controlling voting equity in Sterling Corp, revokes Julian Sterling’s position as CEO, and assumes controlling board seats in Vance Conglomerate’s merger committee.”

The heavy oak doors of the conference hall were shoved open.

Four armed federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, accompanied by officers from the Riverdale Police Department, marched down the aisle.

“Julian Sterling?” the lead federal agent announced, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for grand corporate fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder. You have the right to remain silent.”

“Victoria! Help me!” Julian shrieked, collapsing to his knees beside her chair as the agents grabbed his arms. Tears streamed down his pale face, ruining his handsome corporate image. “Victoria, you told me to sign it! You told me it was safe! Tell them!”

Victoria Vance stood rooted to the spot. Her face was ghastly white, her chest heaving under her pearl choker. She looked down at Julian with absolute disgust, cold detachment masking the sheer terror gnawing at her soul.

“I have no knowledge of Mr. Sterling’s illegal activities,” Victoria said, her voice trembling slightly as she stepped away from him. “Vance Conglomerate will cooperate fully with the federal investigation. Get this criminal out of my sight.”

“Victoria! You monster!” Julian screamed as the federal officers dragged him away in handcuffs, his shouts echoing down the hallway until the doors slammed shut.

The press hall remained in utter shock. Reporters swarmed forward, but Aria stepped down from the podium, flanked by Marcus Thorne.

As she passed Victoria Vance, Aria paused for a brief second. She leaned in close to Victoria’s ear, her voice dropping into a low, terrifying whisper that sent ice straight into Victoria’s veins.

“Julian was just the pawn, Victoria,” Aria whispered, her eyes flashing with a vengeance five years in the making. “Next week… I’m coming for the Queen.”

Without another word, Aria walked out of the hall alongside Marcus Thorne, leaving Victoria standing alone amidst the flashing cameras of a ruined empire.

***

Twenty minutes later, Victoria Vance sat in the back of her tinted limousine as it sped through the rain-soaked streets of Riverdale.

Her hands were shaking violently. On the leather seat beside her lay her digital tablet, displaying a freeze-frame image of Aria Cross from the press conference.

Victoria stared at the image. The high cheekbones. The fierce, icy gray eyes. The regal, unyielding posture.

Suddenly, her eyes locked onto a small detail in the high-definition photo: a tiny, faint silver scar visible near Aria’s left collarbone where her jacket dipped slightly.

A memory—violent, horrific, and clear—flashed through Victoria’s mind: the night five years ago when she had personally slashed Evelyn Vance’s shoulder during their violent struggle before forcing her into the car.

Victoria’s breath hitched in her throat. She dropped her crystal champagne glass onto the floorboard. The glass shattered into a dozen sharp shards, spilling dark red wine across her ivory Chanel dress like fresh blood.

She squeezed her eyes shut, her hand clutching her chest as terror clawed at her heart.

“It’s her…” Victoria whispered into the darkness of the limousine, her voice trembling with horror. “She didn’t die in that water… Evelyn is back.”
