Chapter 2: Poisoned Wine and Broken Promises

Vow of Blood and Retribution 2 of 3

The annual Metropolitan Museum Autumn Charity Gala was the crowning jewel of Manhattan’s elite social calendar. Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings, casting warm gold light across women draped in haute couture silk and men in bespoke tuxedoes.

Victoria Vance stood at the center of the grand ballroom, flanked by board members and city senators. At fifty-five, she possessed the razor-sharp posture of a predator who had spent decades consolidating control over Vance Pharmaceutical after her husband’s suspicious death.

“Tonight,” Victoria announced into the microphone, her diamonds glittering under the spotlights, “we auction an irreplaceable piece of history to fund the Vance Medical Research Initiative. The late Katherine Vance’s personal collection—featuring the 40-carat Colombian Emerald ‘Heart of Montauk’.”

On the velvet pedestal, the green gem blazed like an eye of envy. Five years ago, Victoria had stolen that necklace from Evelyn’s bedroom desk while the search boats were still dragging the bay.

“We start the bidding at One Million Dollars,” the auctioneer declared.

“One point five,” called a hedge fund CEO.

“Two Million,” Julian Blackwood chimed from beside Victoria, attempting to buy it back to bolster public confidence after the morning stock crash.

“Two point five,” another bidder offered.

From the shadow of the grand marble balcony, a smooth, icy voice cut through the whispers of the crowd.

“Five Million Dollars. Cash.”

The ballroom fell dead silent. Heads turned in unison toward the balcony stairs.

Elena Vance descended the marble steps. She wore a halter-neck gown of midnight-blue velvet that clung to her silhouette, her collarbone exposed, displaying a minimalist choker of dark sapphire that perfectly framed her pale throat. Her posture was so identical to her dead mother’s that Victoria’s breath hitched in her chest. Victoria stumbled back a half-step, her champagne glass tilting, spilling pale gold wine over her white glove.

“Five Million going once… twice… Sold to Miss Elena Vance of Eclipse Global!” the auctioneer banged the gavel.

Elena walked directly to the stage. She did not sign a check; her assistant immediately handed a bank transfer receipt to the museum curator.

Elena picked up the velvet box containing the emerald necklace, turned to Victoria, and whispered with terrifying sweetness: “Stolen heirlooms always return to their rightful line, Victoria. You held it for five years… but you were only ever a thief keeping it warm.”

Victoria’s lips trembled with fury, her face draining of color. “Who are you?” she hissed under her breath.

Elena merely smiled, turning on her heel and vanishing into the crowded garden terrace.

***

Outside, the rain had softened into a cool, fragrant mist. The botanical garden was deserted, lit only by low iron lanterns hidden among white hydrangeas.

Elena stood under the wrought-iron gazebo, holding her glass of sparkling water. The emerald necklace sat securely in her clutch bag.

“An expensive statement, Miss Vance,” a low, resonant voice spoke from the shadows behind the stone fountain.

Elena didn’t turn around. “I don’t waste money, Mr. Drake. I buy leverage.”

Alexander Drake stepped into the lantern light. At thirty-four, the chairman of Drake Media Conglomerate was the most feared man in American journalism. Broad-shouldered, with sharp gray eyes and an aura of effortless authority, Alexander controlled ninety news outlets and three satellite networks.

“Leverage is only useful if you survive to use it,” Alexander said quietly, walking until he stood beside her under the gazebo roof. He looked down at her profile, his gray eyes searching every feature. “Five years ago, a girl named Evelyn Vance drowned off Montauk. Her stepmother inherited her estate, her fiancé seized her voting shares, and the local police captain suddenly retired to a villa in Capri. Two months ago, a London fund named Eclipse Global bought up thirty percent of Vance Pharma’s offshore debt.”

Alexander paused, taking a slow sip of his bourbon.

“And tonight, the CEO of Eclipse Global buys Katherine Vance’s necklace with a Swiss account registered under an old family trust in Zurich.”

Elena turned her head slowly, her green eyes fixing onto his. “Are you threatening me, Alexander?”

“I’m offering you a shovel,” Alexander replied, pulling a encrypted black flash drive from his inner jacket pocket and sliding it into her hand. “That drive contains the satellite tracking logs of Julian Blackwood’s private yacht from five years ago. He wasn’t at his club in Hamptons when the bomb went off. He was two hundred yards away in a speedboat, holding the detonator frequency scanner.”

Elena’s fingers tightened around the metal drive until the corners dug into her palm. Her chest heaved once, a silent, volcanic wave of emotion threatening to break through her icy facade.

“Why give me this?” Elena asked softly.

Alexander stepped closer, his shadow falling over her. His fingers lightly brushed the edge of her glove—a brief, electric contact that sent a jolt through her blood.

“Because Victoria Vance bought thirty percent of my network’s debt last year,” Alexander said, his voice dropping into a dark, seductive rumble. “And I don’t share power with murderers. Work with me, Evelyn. Together, we won’t just break their company… we’ll erase them from New York.”
