Chapter 3: The Gala of Retribution

Vow of Blood and Retribution 3 of 3

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was packed with two thousand of the nation’s most powerful political and industrial figures for the Blackwood Industry 50th Anniversary Celebration.

High above the crowd, three giant LED screens displayed the silver logo of Blackwood Industries merged with the blue serpent crest of Vance Pharma.

Julian Blackwood stood at the podium in a flawless black tuxedo, adjusting his golden cufflinks. Beside him, Victoria Vance smiled radiantly for the photographers, her pearl earrings catching the flashlights.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Julian’s voice boomed over the surround-sound speaker system. “Tonight, we do not merely celebrate fifty years of Blackwood innovation. We announce the complete, historic merger of Blackwood Industries and Vance Pharmaceutical! A forty-billion-dollar alliance that will dominate global biotechnology for the next century!”

Applause erupted across the ballroom. Glass flutes clinked in celebration.

Then, the heavy mahogany double doors at the main entrance crashed open.

Elena Vance walked into the ballroom. She wore a dramatic gown of blood-red silk that trailed behind her like a crimson shadow. Beside her walked Alexander Drake, his presence instantly commanding the attention of every camera crew in the room.

“Look!” a society editor gasped. “It’s Elena Vance! And she’s with Alexander Drake!”

Julian’s speech stalled midway through a sentence. His eyes widened as Elena walked up the central aisle toward the main stage, her head held high, a cold, majestic presence cut through the sea of tuxedos.

“I apologize for the intrusion, Julian,” Elena called out, her voice echoing clearly through the microphone feeds broadcast live to millions of television viewers across the nation. “But a merger requires clean accounts… and your ledger is dripping with blood.”

“Security!” Victoria shrieked into her lapel mic. “Remove this woman immediately!”

Before the private security guards could step forward, Alexander Drake pulled a small remote controller from his pocket and pressed the red button.

Instantly, the three giant LED screens above the stage flickered. The corporate logos vanished, replaced by high-definition scans of bank transfer receipts, shell company registration papers in the Cayman Islands, and wiretap transcripts dated October 14, 2021.

The text on the screens was twenty feet high: PROJECT NEMESIS: EXPOSURE OF $120 MILLION EMBEZZLEMENT FROM VANCE PHARMA PENSION FUNDS TO JULIAN BLACKWOOD PERSONAL OFFSHORE TRUST.

Below the ledger came the secondary file: FORENSIC AUDIO RECORDING – OCT 14, 2021: “Make sure the charges are set on the lower hull of The Sea Nymph. Evelyn must not reach the shore alive. Victoria wants the estate cleared by morning.”

The ballroom detonated into absolute bedlam.

Socialites screamed, knocking over champagne towers. Journalists scrambled over chairs to capture photos of the screens.

Julian turned deathly pale, stumbling backward against the podium. “This is fake! It’s a digital hoax! Turn it off! TURN IT OFF!”

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom slammed open once more. Ten federal agents dressed in dark suits, led by the Chief Inspector of the Securities and Exchange Commission and armed federal marshals, marched down the aisle.

“Julian Blackwood! You are under arrest for securities fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit murder!” the Lead Inspector declared, drawing handcuffs from his belt.

Julian looked frantically toward the side exit, but Drake’s security team blocked the doors.

In the chaotic stampede of guests fleeing the hall, Victoria grabbed Julian’s arm, dragging him toward the private service corridor behind the stage.

Elena stepped through the curtain into the quiet, marble-walled service hallway, blocking their escape route.

“Get out of the way, you bitch!” Victoria screamed, pulling a small chrome pistol from her evening purse and pointing it directly at Elena’s chest. “I built this empire! No fake London investor is going to tear it down!”

Elena did not flinch. She slowly raised her right hand and unpinned the diamond brooch at her collar, letting her blouse fall slightly open to reveal the distinct, star-shaped surgical scar at the base of her throat—the mark left by the surgeon who saved her life after the boat explosion.

Victoria stared at the scar. Her eyes dilated in horror. The gun in her hand began to tremble violently.

“No…” Victoria whispered, her voice cracking with pure terror. “No… it’s impossible… You were burned… You died in the water!”

Elena stepped forward into the barrel of the gun, her green eyes blazing with absolute, apocalyptic vengeance.

“I died five years ago, Victoria,” Elena whispered into her stepmother’s ear. “What came back from the ocean… is your reckoning.”

Outside, police sirens wailed, echoing through the streets of Manhattan as heavy boots thundered up the marble stairwell.
