Volume 1, Chapter 5: The Chairman’s Ultimatum
Charles Voss strode down the 4th-floor corridor, flanked by Dr. Kenneth Harris and Fairfield County Deputy Sheriff Miller in full uniform. Voss brandished an embossed Emergency Probate Surrogate Execution Order signed by Judge Vance.
Dr. Elena Park planted her body across the double-door frame of Room 412. “Run that decree through the State Supreme Court Emergency Docket.”
Deputy Miller unsnapped the retention strap on his Glock 17 holster, stepping into her face. “Step aside, Doctor. This is an active court order. You move, or you leave this floor in zip-ties.”
Miller shoved Dr. Park against the nursing desk. Voss and Miller slipped into Room 412, slammed the heavy glass door shut, and engaged the interior emergency deadbolt.
Miller stood with his back to the locked door, keeping the pounding nurses at bay. Voss slowly peeled off his black leather driving gloves.
Daniel lay beneath the stiff white sheet, eyes shut, nasal cannula in place. Beneath the blanket, every muscle in his 6’2″ frame was primed for explosive combat. In his left fist, he gripped Sophia’s tiny blue ribbon hairpin.
Voss leaned over the bedside rail until his lips were two inches from Daniel’s ear. “You built an empire, Daniel. Fourteen billion dollars. But you didn’t have the stomach to rule it. In sixty seconds, this machine stops. And by noon, Mark Gable will have that insolent maid and her little brat at the bottom of Long Island Sound. You lose everything.”
Voss reached up and wrenched the primary oxygen supply coupling counter-clockwise. The pressurized oxygen line popped free with a violent hiss. The Hamilton ventilator screen flashed blood-red, triggering a continuous, ear-splitting 90-decibel alarm: VENTILATOR INOPERATIVE — PATIENT APNEIC.
As Voss smiled and reached out to tear away the intravenous arterial line, Daniel’s right arm exploded from beneath the hospital sheet like a striking viper.
Daniel’s massive, calloused hand clamped around Charles Voss’s throat with bone-crushing, immovable force.
Voss’s smile vanished. His eyes bulged in horrifying shock; his fingernails clawed desperately at Daniel’s wrist. Daniel’s forearm was an unyielding steel bar. Voss gagged soundlessly as his trachea was clamped shut.
Daniel sat bolt upright. He ripped the nasal cannula and telemetry leads from his chest. His slate-gray eyes burned with lethal authority. He dragged Voss down across the chrome bedrail.
“You touched my company. You threatened my family. Now you answer to me.”
The glass door shatters inward. Chief Douglas Barnes and two armed State Police Troopers breached the room with a tactical ram. Barnes executed a brutal close-quarters disarm, slamming Miller into the floor and cuffing him.
Daniel hurled Voss across the room. Voss crashed into the linoleum, wheezing. Daniel swung his bare legs over the edge of the bed and stood completely upright at full height, towering over the room.
Dr. Park pointed to the activated overhead live streaming camera. Daniel looked directly into the lens, holding Sophia’s blue ribbon in his palm.
“Barnes. Prep my armored transport to Whitfield HQ. The Chairman is attending his final meeting.”
Barefoot, hospital gown replaced by a dark henley and tailored trousers, Daniel stepped into the elevator under his own power. He slid Sophia’s blue ribbon into his breast pocket. High noon was twenty minutes away.
“Forty floors up, they think I’m dead. Let’s go show them what a resurrection looks like.”
