Chapter 2: The Midnight Toast

The Tailor’s Secret Trust (The Wedding Suit Reckoning) 2 of 6

The brass clock on the mantle chimed midnight, its sound muffled by the heavy velvet drapes of the King Street rowhouse sunroom.

Thomas Miller stood in the darkened hallway, a shadow among shadows. He had slipped through the kitchen’s side door—a lock he had repaired himself a decade ago, whose intricacies he knew by muscle memory. He had returned only for his grandfather’s gold Elgin pocket watch and the heavy leather ledger containing the deeds to his workshop. He expected the house to be asleep.

Instead, he found the golden glow of a Tiffany glass lamp spilling into the hallway, and the sharp, crystalline clink of champagne flutes.

“To Geneva,” Evelyn’s voice drifted out, slurred with premature triumph and Dom Pérignon.

“To Grand Cayman, my love,” a male voice replied. It was smooth, practiced, and slick with false charm. Richard Sterling.

Tom froze, his hand tightening around the banister. He pressed himself against the vintage floral wallpaper, holding his breath. From his vantage point in the dark, he could see the reflection in the hall mirror.

Richard Sterling sat in Tom’s leather armchair. He wore a tailored suit that looked expensive but fit poorly across the shoulders—a detail Tom’s tailor’s eye caught instantly. Sabrina sat on the sofa, her phone illuminated, scrolling idly, while Evelyn poured another glass of champagne.

“Are you sure the bank approved the wire?” Richard asked, leaning forward, the veneer of the wealthy venture capitalist slipping for a fraction of a second. “I have creditors in Delaware who are running out of patience. Four hundred thousand isn’t a joke to these people, Evelyn. If I don’t have the cash by Monday, they’ll break my legs before they file the federal warrants.”

Tom’s heart stopped. Creditors? Federal warrants?

Evelyn laughed, a cruel, dismissive sound. She reached into her designer handbag and pulled out a thick manila folder, tossing it onto the mahogany coffee table.

“Relax, Richard. I forged his signature on the second-mortgage documents three days ago. The notary is a friend of mine; she rubber-stamped it.” Evelyn tapped the folder with a manicured fingernail. “Miller & Needle, this house, the whole pathetic blue-collar equity. Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The moment the ceremony ends, the wire transfers to your offshore account.”

Sabrina finally looked up from her phone. “And Tom just… takes the debt?”

“Tom will be bankrupt by Monday morning,” Evelyn said, taking a slow sip of her champagne. “He’ll lose the shop. He’ll lose this house. He’s a peasant, Sabrina. He’ll survive. He always does. Meanwhile, we board the 4:00 PM flight from Philadelphia to Grand Cayman.”

Tom stood in the darkness, the cold reality washing over him like ice water.

They weren’t just kicking him out of the wedding. They were burning his life to the ground. Evelyn and Richard were orchestrating a massive, felonious fraud to pay off Richard’s loan sharks, using the equity of the workshop Tom had bled for. And Sabrina—the daughter he had loved unconditionally—was sitting right there, sipping champagne as they planned his total ruin.

Richard picked up a gold fountain pen from the table. He flipped open the mortgage deed endorsement.

“Just need my signature here as the secondary beneficiary,” Richard murmured.

Tom watched in the mirror as Richard’s pen hovered over the document. The final nail in the coffin of Tom’s life. The heartbreak that had crippled him hours ago evaporated entirely, replaced by a crystalline, surgical focus. He didn’t feel rage. He felt the cold, hard steel of the tailoring shears.

He didn’t need his grandfather’s watch right now. He needed to get to the shop.

Tom stepped silently backward, retreating down the dark hallway. He slipped out the side door, into the freezing Lancaster night, pulling the collar of his coat up against the rain.

As the lock clicked shut behind him, Tom looked back at the glowing window of the sunroom.

You want to steal my shop, Evelyn? Tom thought, his jaw setting into iron. You’re going to find out exactly who owns this town.
