Chapter 3: The Missing Matchbook and the Cold Corridor

The Silent Son’s Secret Drawing 3 of 6

The rain struck the stained glass of Blackwood Manor with the rhythmic cadence of artillery.

I stood in the shadows of the mezzanine overlooking the grand entrance hall, my fingers curled around the balustrade. Down below, Sophia was kneeling on the cold marble, helping Emma unbutton her yellow raincoat. Sophia moved with an unhurried grace that defied the suffocating gloom of my family home. When she laughed at something Emma whispered, the sound caught in the vaulted ceiling—a genuine, human note in an echoing tomb.

Then the heavy front doors swung open without a knock.

Uncle Vincent stepped inside, shaking water from his charcoal cashmere overcoat. In his right hand, the polished silver falcon-head cane clicked sharply against the Carrara floor tiles. That sound—clack, clack, clack—sent an electric jolt through my spine.

“Cosimo,” Vincent barked, tossing his gloves onto the antique side table. “Where is Dante? We have the harbor union negotiations in three hours.”

His eyes drifted across the foyer, landing on Sophia and Emma. His smile was immediate, rehearsed, and utterly devoid of warmth.

“And who do we have here?” Vincent purred, taking two deliberate steps toward them. His cane tapped the floor with measured weight. “A new addition to our solitary Don’s monastery?”

Sophia stood up smoothly, placing herself between Vincent and her daughter. Her posture was straight, her shoulders square. “Sophia Ricci. I look after the household.”

Vincent’s gaze lingered on her face, then dropped to Emma. “A pretty thing. But Blackwood Hall is no place for delicate children, my dear. Strange accidents happen on these stairs.”

I descended the stairs before he could take another breath. My footsteps made no sound against the marble runner, but Vincent felt the temperature drop before I even spoke.

“Vincent.”

My uncle turned, his eyes narrowing for a fraction of a second before the genial mask settled back into place. “Dante! I was beginning to think you’d sealed yourself in your monitor crypt permanently.”

“My house is in order,” I said coldly, stepping beside Sophia. The faint scent of lavender and clean rain drifted from her, a sharp contrast to the stale cologne and cigar smoke clinging to Vincent. “What brings you here unannounced?”

“The Capos are nervous, nephew,” Vincent said, leaning on his cane. “The Moretti territory has been quiet, but rumors are circulating. They wonder if your grief is still blinding you to the empire’s daily demands.”

“My grief doesn’t impair my vision,” I replied, staring directly into his pale eyes. “Tell the Capos their dividends will arrive on schedule. And next time you visit, call first.”

Vincent chuckled, a dry, grating sound. He tapped his cane once more against the floor. “Of course. Always the vigilant guardian.” He tipped his hat to Sophia with exaggerated courtesy, turned, and left into the pouring rain.

As soon as the front doors clicked shut, Sophia turned to me. Her dark eyes were searching, fierce, and entirely unafraid.

“He frightens Noah,” she stated without preamble.

“Vincent is my uncle. He helped build this family.”

“I don’t care what he built,” Sophia countered, her voice low and steady. “When he walked in and that cane hit the floor, Noah retreated into the farthest corner of the wardrobe. He was hyperventilating. That child is not mute from sadness, Mr. Thorne. He is terrified of someone who walks this hall.”

Her words felt like a physical blow against my chest.

Later that evening, I descended into the basement bunker. I didn’t watch the live cameras. Instead, I pulled the digitized forensic archive from six years ago—the cold case file of Isabella’s death.

I zoomed in on the photos Vincent had presented to me that terrible night: the Moretti matchbook supposedly discovered by the garden entrance, the muddy shoe impression, the broken latch.

I pulled the server logs for Blackwood Hall from the night Isabella died.

My breath hitched.

The magnetic lock on the garden side door had never registered an opening between midnight and 4:00 AM. It had remained deadbolted from the inside.

The matchbook hadn’t been dropped by an intruder fleeing the scene. It had been placed there by someone who already had full access to the house.

I stared at the timestamp on the screen, my blood turning to ice as the realization took hold: the enemy I had spent six years hunting across the city had never left Blackwood Manor.
