Chapter 2: The Mask of Victoria Frost

The Scorned Heiress: Sweet Revenge 2 of 3

The St. Sterling Grand Ballroom was an arena of sickening opulence.

Four massive Baccarat crystal chandeliers hung from forty-foot ceilings adorned with gilded neo-classical frescoes, casting a golden glow over three hundred of Sterling City’s most powerful figures. Corporate titans in tailored tuxedos, high-society heiresses draped in diamond necklaces, and international media executives mingled over glasses of vintage Dom Pérignon.

At the center of the grand hall stood a eighty-foot mahogany runway, flanked by velvet-draped VIP lounges and high-definition media broadcasting screens. Tonight was the annual Sterling Haute Couture Gala—the most prestige-laden night of the global fashion calendar.

Standing on the elevated VIP platform at the head of the ballroom, Richard Hayes held a crystal champagne flute, exuding the effortless arrogance of a man who believed he owned the world.

He was dressed in a navy velvet Tom Ford tuxedo with satin lapels, a platinum Patek Philippe watch gleaming on his wrist. Beside him stood Chloe Vance, glowing under the spotlight in a breathtaking emerald-green silk ballgown featuring hand-embroidered silver filigree.

Around them, board directors of Vance Enterprises and high-ranking city officials offered glowing congratulations.

“To the future of the luxury industry,” declared Arthur Vance, a senior board member and cousin to the late founder. “Richard, taking Vance Fashion Group public in tandem with Hayes Conglomerate is the boldest corporate move Sterling has seen in a decade! And Chloe… your ‘Autumn Dynasty’ collection preview tonight is nothing short of artistic genius!”

Chloe smiled smoothly, resting her hand lightly on Richard’s arm, her diamond rings sparkling in the glare of the press cameras.

“Thank you, Arthur,” Chloe said, her voice dripping with practiced modesty. “It was my solemn duty to pick up the creative torch after my sister’s… unfortunate passing five years ago. I only wish Elena were here to see Vance Fashion Group reach such magnificent heights under Richard’s leadership.”

Richard lowered his eyes for a brief, calculated moment, adopting an expression of solemn grief that he had perfected over five years.

“Elena will always remain in our hearts,” Richard said, his tone heavy with synthetic emotion as three press photographers snapped photos of his somber expression. “Her tragic loss five years ago nearly broke this company. But tonight, as we prepare to finalize the complete consolidation of Vance Enterprises into Hayes Conglomerate at midnight, we honor her memory by forging a global empire.”

He raised his glass to the crowd. “To the Hayes-Vance Dynasty!”

“To the Hayes-Vance Dynasty!” the room echoed, glasses clinking across the hall.

Richard took a slow sip, a cold spark of satisfaction burning in his eyes. In less than two hours, the voting proxy window would close, officially transferring 70% of Vance Fashion Group’s voting equity into his personal shell entity in the Virgin Islands. The stolen legacy was finally, irreversibly his.

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany double doors at the main entrance of the Grand Ballroom groaned open.

A sudden, sharp blast of rain-scented wind swept into the warm ballroom, causing the flames of the crystal chandeliers to flicker.

The low hum of chatter began to die down, row by row, table by table, as if an invisible wave of silence was washing over the venue. Flashbulbs stopped popping. Society hostesses froze mid-sentence.

Richard frowned, turning toward the entrance. “What is going on down there? Security was supposed to clear the foyer for the runway launch.”

Standing at the threshold of the ballroom was a woman.

She walked in slow, deliberate steps, each strike of her dark velvet stilettos echoing across the polished white marble floor like the ticking of a death clock.

She was dressed in an breathtaking floor-length couture gown of midnight-obsidian silk, slashed at the shoulder to reveal ivory skin, with a dramatic sapphire-blue train that flowed behind her like liquid night. A high collar of dark platinum filigree framed her slender neck, and her raven hair was styled into an immaculate, regal crown.

But it was not merely her dress that paralyzed the room.

It was her face.

Her pale, flawless skin, her razor-sharp cheekbones, and above all, her piercing, freezing sapphire eyes—eyes that burned with a cold, terrifying light that seemed to look right through human souls.

Richard’s hand froze in mid-air. The crystal champagne flute slipped from his fingers, crashing violently against the marble floor, shattering into a hundred sharp fragments. Champagne splashed across his leather shoes, but he didn’t even notice.

His face turned ashen white, his blood draining until he looked like a corpse standing on the VIP platform.

“E… Elena…?” Richard whispered, his voice cracking with a terror so visceral it choked his lungs.

Beside him, Chloe let out a sharp, horrified gasp, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the gilded railing. Her eyes bulged in utter disbelief, her fake smile instantly disintegrating into raw, unadulterated horror.

“No…” Chloe stammered, her voice shaking violently. “That’s… that’s impossible! She… she drowned five years ago! We saw the car—!”

“Shut your mouth!” Richard hissed under his breath, sweat breaking out across his forehead despite the air-conditioned ballroom. He forced his breathing to steady, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped beast. *No. It’s impossible. Elena Vance died in Sterling Bay. The body was swept out to sea. This is a trick. A ghost. An imposter.*

The mysterious woman paid no attention to the stunned whispers sweeping through the crowd of three hundred socialites.

“Is that… Elena Vance?” whispered a senior fashion editor at the front table. “My God, she looks identical to the late heiress!”

“Look at her posture… her eyes… it’s like Elena returned from the grave!” another board director gasped.

Accompanied by two tall, broad-shouldered security operatives in crisp black suits, the woman strolled gracefully toward the center of the ballroom, stopping right at the foot of the VIP platform, looking up at Richard and Chloe with a look of calm, magnificent disdain.

“Mr. Hayes,” the woman spoke.

Her voice was melodious, rich, and possessed a quiet, chilling authority that instantly commanded the entire room.

“You seem startled. Is a broken glass your customary way of greeting the principal creditor of your corporation?”

Richard swallowed hard, desperately regaining his composure as he stepped down the stairs of the VIP platform, forcing a cold, defensive sneer onto his face.

“I don’t know who you are, lady, or what kind of cheap parlor game you think you’re playing by styling yourself after my late wife,” Richard said loudly, attempting to reassert dominance before the watching media. “This is a private corporate gala for Vance Fashion Group and Hayes Conglomerate. Security! Escort this woman out immediately!”

Two head security guards in navy uniforms stepped forward, reaching out to grab the woman’s arm.

Before their fingers could touch her silk gown, her lead security operative stepped in with lightning speed, catching the first guard’s wrist in a brutal vice grip and twisting it downward until the guard dropped to his knees with a groan of pain. The second guard froze, staring into the cold barrel of an elite executive defense stance.

The crowd gasped in shock.

“Touch me again,” the woman said softly, her blue eyes fixing onto Richard with lethal indifference, “and I will buy your security firm by midnight and fire every man in your lineage.”

She reached into her jewel-encrusted evening clutch and withdrew a sleek, silver platinum business card, tossing it effortlessly onto the marble table beside Richard’s broken champagne glass.

“Allow me to introduce myself properly,” she said, her voice echoing clearly through the silent ballroom. “I am Victoria Frost. Managing Director of Frost International Holdings.”

The name hit the room like a thunderbolt.

“Frost International?” gasped a wealthy investment banker sitting at the main table. “The offshore venture giant from Zurich? The ones who restructured the Italian Silk Syndicate last year?”

Richard stared at the platinum card, his eyes darting frantically between the embossed silver lettering and Victoria’s freezing face.

“Victoria Frost…” Richard growled, his knuckles clenching into fists. “I don’t care what offshore shell company you represent. You have no standing here. Vance Enterprises is entering a private corporate merger with Hayes Conglomerate tonight. You have no business in this hall.”

“On the contrary, Mr. Hayes,” Victoria replied smoothly, taking two steps closer to the platform, her sapphire eyes burning with dark amusement. “I am the only person in this hall who has business here.”

She raised her left hand, making a slight gesture with her velvet-gloved fingers.

Instantly, the giant eighty-foot media screens surrounding the runway flickered, interrupting the glowing slides of Chloe’s fashion line. In their place flashed the official, red-sealed financial registries of the Zurich International Debt Exchange and the Cayman Monetary Authority.

The entire ballroom strained forward to read the massive bold text flashing across the screens:

**NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE & DEBT DEFAULT**
**TARGET ENTITY: VANCE FASHION GROUP / HAYES CONGLOMERATE**
**REDEEMABLE SECONDARY MEZZANINE DEBT: $380,000,000 USD**
**PRIMARY CREDITOR HOLDER: FROST INTERNATIONAL HOLDINGS (55.4% CONTROLLING INTEREST)**

Panic erupted among the board members of Vance Enterprises.

“Three hundred and eighty million in default?!” shouted Arthur Vance, jumping out of his seat. “Richard! What is the meaning of this?! You told the board our secondary bond obligations were fully covered through credit lines in London!”

Richard’s face went from pale white to a dark, furious red. Sweat dripped down his neck as he stared at the screens in absolute horror.

“This is fake!” Richard roared, pointing an accusing finger at Victoria. “This is fraudulent market manipulation! My legal team will have you arrested for securities fraud before the night is over!”

Chloe rushed down the platform stairs, her green silk gown rustling wildly, her voice shrill and desperate. “You imposter! You filthy fraud! You came here wearing my dead sister’s face, trying to extort our family on our biggest night?! Security! Call the police!”

Victoria didn’t move an inch. She simply looked at Chloe with an expression of quiet, crushing pity—the way a queen looks at a frantic insect.

“Your dead sister’s face, Chloe?” Victoria murmured, her voice dropping to a smooth, dangerous purr. “Tell me… why does the mention of Elena Vance make your hands shake so violently? Are you afraid that if she were standing here… she might remind you of what happened on Obsidian Cliff five years ago?”

Chloe gasped as if she had been slapped across the face, taking an involuntary step back, her chest heaving in panic. “I… I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

“Of course you don’t,” Victoria smiled coldly. “Just as you don’t know that fifty-five percent of your company’s debt now belongs to me. And under the terms of the master credit covenant signed by Richard Hayes three years ago… default on secondary mezzanine obligations gives Frost International the immediate legal right to freeze all corporate voting proxies.”

Victoria stepped directly up to Richard, her eyes inches from his trembling face.

“Your merger is dead, Richard,” she whispered softly, her words cutting deeper than any blade. “And your stolen crown is coming off tonight.”

The ballroom descended into complete, unprecedented chaos as reporters surged forward with flashing cameras, leaving Richard Hayes and Chloe Vance standing trapped under the blinding spotlights of their own ruined stage.
