Volume 1 Chapter 3: Checkmate at the Gala

The ballroom descended into complete madness. Whispers swelled into a deafening roar as financial journalists frantically slammed away on their laptops, broadcasting Victoria Frost’s announcement live across global markets.

“Nonsense!” Richard bellowed, his composure shattering. Sweat beaded on his forehead as he gestured wildly to the venue security team. “This is a scam! Security! Throw this fraudulent woman out! Call the police!”

Four heavy-set venue guards stepped forward, reaching toward Victoria.

“I wouldn’t touch her if you value your careers, gentlemen.”

A deep, commanding voice resounded from the grand balcony above. The crowd turned upward to see Julian Cross standing at the brass railing. Dressed in a bespoke charcoal tuxedo, his silver-gray eyes swept over the room with absolute authority.

Alongside Julian stood Chief Commissioner Vance of the Sterling Police Department and the Head of the Securities Exchange Commission.

“Julian Cross?!” an executive gasped in the front row. “The shadow king of Wall Street… he’s personally here?!”

Julian descended the spiral marble staircase, his footsteps calm and unhurried. He walked directly to Victoria’s side, placing a protective hand at the small of her back.

“Cross Global Capital has backed Miss Victoria Frost with an unrestricted $1 billion joint buyout fund,” Julian said, his voice echoing across the quieted ballroom. “Any illegal attempt to intimidate, touch, or silence Miss Frost will be treated as an act of hostility against Cross Global Financial.”

Richard stumbled backward into the head table, knocking over a tower of champagne glasses. “Julian… Mr. Cross… this woman is a ghost! She’s using Elena’s likeness to destroy Vance Enterprises!”

Victoria stepped onto the stage platform, standing inches from Richard. She leaned in close, her voice dropping to a icy whisper that only Richard and Chloe could hear.

“You pushed me into the ocean, Richard. You stole my life, my name, and my father’s hard work. But you forgot one thing…” She leaned in closer, her crimson lips almost brushing his ear. “…ghosts don’t bleed. But you will.”

She turned back to the audience, pulling a USB drive from her evening clutch and handing it to the SEC Chairman.

“On this drive are five years of offshore tax evasion records, shell company transfers, and evidence of illegal stock manipulation executed by Richard Hayes and Chloe Vance.”

Outside the glass windows of the hotel, blue and red emergency lights began to flash. Sirens wailed down Sterling Avenue.

Chloe let out a blood-curdling shriek as female officers approached the stage to detain her for questioning. She dropped to her knees on the shattered glass, clutching Elena’s stolen diamond necklace in terror.

Richard stared in utter horror as police officers snapped steel handcuffs around his wrists. Reporters crowded around the stage, flashes blinding him as he was led away in utter disgrace.

Victoria stood atop the stage alongside Julian Cross, watching her betrayers brought low before the world. Julian leaned down, whispering in her ear with a low, intoxicating warmth:

“Phase one is complete, Victoria. Now… let’s rebuild your empire.”
