Chapter 6: The Steel Vow
The Drake Grand Ballroom descended into absolute chaos.
Thick, acrid smoke from the shattered chandeliers hung in the air, punctuated by the frantic strobing of emergency fire alarms and the muzzle flashes of automatic weapons. Screams echoed off the cracked marble walls as civilian guests stampeded toward the Michigan Avenue exits.
Dominic Ashford and Carter Vance established a lethal perimeter behind the ruined gold-leaf pillars. Moving with terrifying, synchronized precision, they laid down suppressing fire, systematically neutralizing Salvatore Moretti’s forward mercenaries to cover the evacuation.
Dominic’s jaw was locked, his slate-gray eyes scanning the darkness for the syndicate boss.
“Move left!” Dominic barked, slamming a fresh magazine into his Sig Sauer.
He advanced toward the kitchen service corridor, Isla moving low and fast behind him.
But as they reached the narrow hallway, Moretti emerged from the stairwell shadows. He didn’t raise his shotgun. Instead, he pulled the pin on a military-grade flashbang grenade and hurled it straight down the corridor.
Dominic lunged forward to kick the canister away, but it detonated with a concussive, deafening Eeeee-BANG!
The shockwave shattered the remaining overhead light fixtures. The blast caught Isla, throwing her backward through the heavy steel pneumatic fire door leading to the basement tunnels.
She hit the concrete floor hard, gasping for breath as the heavy door slammed shut on its hydraulic hinge. The automatic fire-latch engaged with a heavy, metallic clank, sealing the corridor entirely.
“Isla!” Dominic roared, shaking off the blinding flash. He scrambled to the door, hammering his fists against the reinforced steel, but the lock was dead.
Through the thick metal, he heard the heavy, echoing thud of Moretti’s boots walking down the auxiliary maintenance stairs, descending into the sub-basement. Toward Isla.
“Carter!” Dominic shouted over the comms, his voice cracking with panicked fury. “Bring the hydraulic ram to the kitchen stairwell! Now!”
Without waiting for backup, Dominic spun around and sprinted for the secondary maintenance hatch.
The subterranean backup generator vault was deafening. Massive twin diesel turbines vibrated the damp concrete floor, feeding emergency power to the upper floors. The walls were lined with heavy 480-volt electrical switchboards.
Isla picked herself up, her emerald gown torn at the hem, a streak of soot smeared across her collarbone. She tested the far exit door. Locked.
She turned around as the heavy iron doorway groaned open.
Salvatore Moretti stepped into the vault. His face was covered in plaster dust, a sadistic, feral sneer twisting his mouth. He raised a silver Colt .45 and pointed it directly at her chest.
“You cost me the harbor, Nurse,” Moretti rasped over the roar of the generators. “But I’m going to take his heart before I die.”
Isla didn’t scream. She didn’t beg.
Her clinical composure locked into place. Keeping her eyes fixed on the barrel of the Colt, she took a slow, calculated step backward.
“You’re already dead, Moretti,” Isla said, her voice carrying a cold, unwavering clarity. “Dominic will dismantle everything you’ve ever built.”
Moretti laughed, tightening his finger on the trigger. “Let’s see if he can stitch you back together.”
Isla took one final step backward, her shoulder brushing against the main industrial capacitor breaker panel.
She didn’t hesitate. She reached up with both hands, grabbed the heavy, red-painted copper grounding lever, and threw her entire body weight backward, yanking it down.
The 480-volt circuit grounded out.
A massive, violet-blue electrical arc exploded from the panel with a deafening KRAZZZZ-ZZZAP!
The violent flash of electricity lit the subterranean vault brighter than the midday sun.
Moretti screamed, dropping his weapon and clawing at his face as the blinding light scorched his retinas.
Before the electrical hum could fade, the iron door behind him imploded.
Dominic smashed through the frame. Seeing the syndicate boss staggering and clawing at his eyes, Dominic launched himself forward. He tackled Moretti violently into a concrete support pillar. Utilizing a brutal close-quarters strike, Dominic brought his knee up and snapped Moretti’s right radius and ulna with a sickening crunch.
The silver Colt skidded uselessly across the iron floor.
Moretti collapsed to the concrete, coughing up blood, broken and defeated.
Dominic didn’t stop.
The bloodlust that had driven him through the hotel consumed him entirely. He planted his heavy combat boot directly onto Moretti’s chest, pinning the mob boss to the floor. Dominic drew his Sig Sauer, racked the slide, and pressed the smoking muzzle directly against the center of Moretti’s forehead.
Dominic’s knuckles were bone-white. His chest heaved violently, his eyes wild with murderous fury. This man had threatened Marco with a child-sized casket. He had tried to execute Isla.
“Die,” Dominic hissed, his finger tightening on the trigger.
“Dominic.”
The voice was soft, clear, and perfectly calm.
Isla stepped forward. She didn’t shout. She didn’t try to physically drag him away.
She simply reached out and placed her warm, bare hand gently over his trembling fingers on the grip of the gun.
Dominic froze.
“Look at me,” Isla whispered.
Slowly, Dominic tore his gaze away from Moretti and looked up. Isla’s amber-green eyes were glowing with absolute moral clarity, courage, and unconditional love.
“He is broken,” Isla said softly, her thumb brushing over his bruised knuckles. “Federal agents are upstairs right now with the dock manifests. He’s going to spend the rest of his life in a concrete box. He is defeated.”
She stepped closer, the heat of her body pressing against his arm.
“You are too good a man to stain your soul with this,” she murmured. “We won. Let it go.”
Dominic stared into her eyes. The terrifying, hypervigilant sovereign of the underworld began to fracture. The violent tension drained from his corded shoulders. His racing, panicked breath slowed, matching the steady, rhythmic rise and fall of her chest.
For the first time in his life, he didn’t need violence to feel safe.
He lowered the weapon.
Moments later, Carter Vance and a squad of federal tactical agents stormed the vault. They hauled the groveling, broken Moretti up off the floor in handcuffs.
The syndicate was permanently dismantled.
At 6:00 AM, the first rays of dawn broke over Lake Michigan.
The Ashford Citadel Penthouse was silent, bathed in warm, golden-pink morning light pouring through the twenty-foot glass windows.
In the library, the hearth fire crackled softly. Marco lay fast asleep on the deep leather sofa. His breathing was deep, steady, and perfectly clear. An intricate robotics model rested on the coffee table beside him.
Isla stood by the sofa, gently tucking a thick wool blanket over her brother’s shoulders. She watched his chest rise and fall without a hint of a wheeze, her heart expanding with profound gratitude.
She turned around.
Dominic was standing by his mahogany desk. He wore a clean shirt, the sleeves rolled up over his bruised forearms. He held a crisp, folded piece of paper in his hands.
It was the original $50,000 midnight nursing contract they had signed in the hospital room.
Dominic walked slowly to the hearth. Without a word, he tossed the contract into the fire. The flames caught the edges, turning the paper black, curling it into ash until nothing remained.
He turned to face Isla.
“I hired you because I couldn’t face the dark,” Dominic confessed, his gravelly voice stripped of all its heavy armor. He spoke with a raw, heartfelt reverence that made Isla’s pulse race. “I thought I just needed someone to keep watch. But your courage, your empathy… your fierce heart showed me how to live in the light.”
He stepped closer, closing the distance between them.
“I love you, Isla,” Dominic said quietly. “Unconditionally.”
Before she could speak, Dominic Ashford—the most powerful, ruthless man in Chicago—dropped to one knee on the Persian rug.
He reached into his pocket and placed two items in the palm of her hand. The black master keycard to the penthouse, and the legally notarized co-deed to the Citadel itself.
He reached up, wrapping his large, callused hands around hers with staggering tenderness.
“I don’t want a nurse. I don’t want an employee,” Dominic vowed, looking up into her eyes. “I want an equal partner. I want my family. Will you marry me?”
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over Isla’s eyelashes. She looked down at the man who had laid down his empire, his rage, and his very life to protect her and her brother.
“Yes,” Isla whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “I love you.”
She dropped to her knees in front of him, pulling him forward.
Dominic caught her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, and their lips met in a passionate, sweeping kiss as the golden sunrise flooded the Citadel, sealing their vow in steel and light.
