Chapter 4: The Ring in the Glass
Before Mark Vance could comprehend the name Vivian Sinclair written across the wet divorce decree, Vivian reached down to her left hand.
With fluid, effortless grace, she unclasped her plain silver wedding band—the simple twenty-dollar ring Mark had bought her five years ago when they were living on instant noodles in a cold industrial loft and dreaming of building a better future together.
Mark was holding a crystal flute of vintage Dom Pérignon champagne, his hands shaking slightly from adrenaline, panic, and rage as he tried to steady his breath in front of the press cameras.
Vivian stepped directly up to the edge of the wooden stage. Without saying a word, she held the silver ring over his crystal flute and let it fall.
CLINK.
The plain silver band dropped straight through the amber champagne, striking the crystal bottom with a sharp metallic chime that echoed through the room. A steady stream of carbonated bubbles swirled around the metal ring, rising to the surface like trapped memories of a five-year marriage that was now forever dead and buried.
“Keep the ring, Mark,” Vivian said softly, her clear, crisp voice echoing across the silent hall like a solemn bell ringing in an empty cathedral. “Consider it my final payment for the five years I spent turning a helpless, begging boy into a man who turned out to be nothing more than a beggar in a borrowed suit.”
Mark’s face turned from deathly pale to dark crimson. “What did you just call me, you ungrateful bitch?!”
Chloe puffed out her chest, stepping forward to shield Mark as if protecting her prized financial asset. “How dare you insult Mark Vance! He is the CEO of Vance Luxury Group! He commands a personal net worth of four hundred million dollars! You are nothing compared to him! You are just a broke, disgraced nobody who lost her husband!”
Vivian looked at Chloe with cold, quiet pity. “He commands four hundred million dollars in debt guarantees, Miss Miller. And the guarantor of every single one of those loans is standing right in front of you.”
Before Chloe could spit out another insult, the main glass double-doors of the Grand Azure Pavilion were shoved open from the outside by eight massive men wearing tailored charcoal tactical suits. Each man bore a gleaming gold falcon crest pin on his lapel—the sacred seal of global sovereign capital.
Behind them stepped a tall, strikingly handsome man in his early thirties. He wore a double-breasted navy cashmere overcoat over a bespoke Savile Row suit. His facial features were razor-sharp, his silver-gray eyes emanated an aura of terrifying, sovereign financial power that instantly commanded the entire room, forcing everyone to look at him.
It was Ethan Sinclair—the Executive Director of Sinclair Sovereign Capital, member of the European Private Banking Council, and the most feared venture capitalist in Northern Europe.
The entire ballroom went completely motionless. The whispering socialites, the news reporters, the security guards—everyone froze in place.
Mark Vance’s jaw dropped in absolute shock. “Mr… Mr. Sinclair?!” Mark stammered, his arrogant posture instantly collapsing into pathetic, groveling submission. He nearly tripped over his own feet as he scrambled down from the stage, extending a wet, trembling hand. “Mr. Sinclair! What an unexpected honor! Did you come to observe our corporate anniversary? We were just finalizing our discussion regarding the master distribution contract—”
Ethan Sinclair walked right past Mark’s outstretched hand as if Mark were an invisible speck of dust on the floor.
Walking straight through the flooded ballroom, Ethan stopped directly in front of Vivian. In full view of three hundred high-society guests, fifty reporters, and Mark Vance’s wide-open eyes, the legendary financial titan bowed his head in deep, ninety-degree reverence.
“Welcome back, Your Highness,” Ethan announced, his deep voice carrying clear across the hall. “The sovereign private jet is fueled at Terminal 1. The global board of directors is assembled at Sinclair Tower, awaiting your command.”
A collective gasp swept through the room like a physical wave. Reporters stopped taking photos, their eyes bulging in disbelief. Cameras wobbled as photographers stared at Vivian in stunned silence.
Chloe’s breath hitched in her throat. Mark’s outstretched hand began to tremble uncontrollably, his eyes darting frantically back and forth between Ethan Sinclair and Vivian.
“Your… Your Highness?” Mark choked out, his voice cracking hysterically. “Mr. Sinclair, there must be a grave misunderstanding! That is Vivian! She is my ex-wife! She is a nobody from nowhere! She has no money, no title, no background, and no connections!”
Ethan slowly turned his head toward Mark. His silver-gray eyes narrowed into slits of terrifying disgust and contempt.
“A nobody?” Ethan said in a voice as cold as liquid nitrogen. “You are speaking to Lady Vivian Sinclair, sole hereditary heir to the Sinclair Sovereign Empire, Executive Chairwoman of Sinclair Sovereign Capital, and the owner of ninety-two percent of the senior debt notes holding your fraudulent company together.”
Ethan made a swift motion with his hand. Two tactical aides immediately stepped forward, unfolding a magnificent obsidian silk cloak lined with pure white ermine fur. Ethan personally draped the royal cloak around Vivian’s shoulders, completely covering the wet red wine stain on her dress.
Vivian turned toward the pavilion exit. She did not give Mark Vance a second glance.
“Ethan,” Vivian said as she walked toward the doors.
“At your service, Chairwoman,” Ethan replied, falling into step half a pace behind her.
“Notify our executive teams in Zurich, London, and Wall Street,” Vivian commanded in a calm, measured tone as she stepped out into the stormy night. “At precisely 12:01 AM, execute Option Zero against Vance Luxury Group.”
“Understood, Chairwoman,” Ethan replied with a cold, predatory smile.
Outside, lined up along the private seaside driveway, stood a convoy of twelve black Maybach 62S limousines, their gold falcon hood ornaments gleaming beneath the streetlights. As Vivian approached, twelve chauffeured doors were opened simultaneously by uniformed drivers.
Mark Vance rushed out into the pouring rain, soaking his tuxedo, screaming her name into the howling wind. “Vivian! Vivian, wait! What did you mean by Option Zero?! Vivian, talk to me! We can work this out! Vivian!”
The heavy Maybach door clicked shut with a solid, airtight seal. The lead limousine accelerated smoothly into the dark night, followed by the eleven armored escorts, leaving Mark Vance standing alone in the torrential rain, clutching his wet champagne glass with a silver ring resting quietly at the bottom.
Inside the lead Maybach, the ambient lighting was a soft, restful gold, shielding Vivian from the storm outside. Ethan sat opposite her, reviewing real-time market indicators on a fold-out touch display. “All senior partners across Europe and Asia have been briefed, Chairwoman,” Ethan reported softly. “The market opens in Tokyo and London in a few hours. Vance Luxury Group’s stock will experience an unprecedented collapse.”
Vivian looked out the tinted window as the city lights blurred past in the heavy rain. For five years, she had chosen humility and love over sovereign power. But now that the illusion was broken, she was ready to reclaim her birthright. Mark Vance had wanted the world to see him as a king; by sunrise, he would realize he was nothing more than a ghost in an empty castle.
