Chapter 4: The Desperate Summons

The Help Eats in the Kitchen: The Disowned Wife’s Reckoning 4 of 6

The badge was matte black steel, stamped with the silver seal of the Department of Defense Office of the Inspector General.

Senior Auditor Campbell did not take off his overcoat. He did not sit in the Italian leather guest chair Richard offered. He stood in the center of Hale Technologies’ tenth-floor executive boardroom, flanked by two armed Defense Contract Management Agency officers, and placed a thick, red-stamped federal document on the glass table.

“You have forty-seven hours and twelve minutes, Mr. Hale,” Campbell said, his voice flat and devoid of human warmth. “At the Boston Defense Innovation Summit tomorrow morning, your firm will either demonstrate a fully operational, unencrypted Aegis-Grid kernel with Lead Architect Sullivan present, or the United States Government will terminate Contract FA8702 for cause, execute an immediate eighteen-million-dollar clawback of disbursed advance funds, and refer this file for criminal debarment.”

Richard Hale stood behind his mahogany desk, his neck drenched in cold sweat. “Auditor Campbell, Hale Technologies has served the Navy for three decades! My late father—”

“Your late father is not on the signature block of this contract, Mr. Hale,” Campbell cut him off. “A forty-eight-hour clock is running. Do not test the Department of Defense.”

Hours later in the Hale Estate drawing room, Richard threw the federal cure notice onto the antique tea table. Madison ignored it, whining that her Amex Centurion card was just declined at Bergdorf Goodman.

“Silence, both of you,” Evelyn struck her gold cane on the Persian rug. “Claire is a Maine fisherman’s daughter with no family, no pedigree, and no money. Call her, Richard. Remind her who put clothes on her back. Tell her if she isn’t in this house by midnight, we will destroy her name.”

That night in his darkened private study, Richard drank heavily, leaving venomous voicemails threatening lawsuits. When the threats failed, he tried bargaining, offering a raise. By midnight, half a bottle of Macallan deep, Richard tried fake sweetness. By 2:00 AM, Richard was sweating, sobbing into his phone in the dark.

“Claire… please… I’ll give you whatever you want. I’ll make you VP. Just don’t let them arrest me tomorrow… please…”

On his twenty-fifth attempt, the operator tone sounded: `The number you have dialed is no longer receiving calls from this caller.` Richard threw his crystal glass against the wall, shattering it into a hundred shards.

The next afternoon, a sharp-suited federal courier flanked by private security entered the boardroom and dropped two thick, notarized blue folders onto the table. It was an emergency Federal Temporary Restraining Order prohibiting Hale Technologies from executing any derivative code derived from USPTO Patent #11,892,301, alongside a $100,000,000 trade secret theft civil complaint from Vance Legal Consortium.

A crisp memo signed by Julian Vance lay on top: `Any further harassment or contact with CEO Claire Sullivan will result in immediate criminal restraining orders and federal wiretap subpoenas. We will see you at the Summit.`

Evelyn screamed, ripping the letter. Richard grabbed her arms, shouting that Vance could buy their entire dynasty. Cornered, Richard turned to Chief Engineer Kevin with bloodshot eyes and trembling hands.

“Patch the 2022 beta code with pre-recorded radar loops! If the Pentagon board sees a green screen on stage tomorrow, they’ll sign the extension before Vance can speak!”

“Mr. Hale, that is defense procurement fraud!” Kevin protested in terror. “If they run an adversarial packet injection, the simulation will crash in five seconds!”

“They won’t run a live test,” Richard screamed. “They never run live tests on stage. Just build the fake!”

Richard wiped the greasy sheen of sweat from his forehead with the sleeve of his Brioni jacket, staring into the flickering glow of Kevin’s monitor as the fake simulation compiled.

“It’s done,” Kevin whispered, his voice sounding like a man standing before a firing squad. “God help us tomorrow.”

Outside the Seaport windows, midnight settled over Boston Harbor like a black shroud.
