Volume 1 Chapter 3: Reckoning at the Vance Gala
Outside the eighty-eighth floor of Vance Financial Tower, a fierce coastal storm hammered against the floor-to-ceiling glass. Sheets of rain whipped against the reinforced panes, blurring the brilliant sea of Capital City’s skyline into streaks of neon silver and charcoal grey.
Inside the Grand Ballroom, the atmosphere was thick with suffocating heat, the fragrance of white lilies, and the underlying static of high-stakes anxiety. Three massive crystal chandeliers suspended from the vaulted ceiling cast a brilliant, geometric glare over seven hundred invited guests—foreign ambassadors, hedge fund titans, high-court judges, and press camera crews whose flashbulbs flickered like endless lightning.
Despite the free-flowing Dom Pérignon and the serene cadence of the live string quartet on the side balcony, the room vibrated with nervous whispers. News of Vance Logistics’ catastrophic twenty-two point four percent stock crash four hours earlier had ripped through the financial district like wildfire. The twenty-four-hour deadline for a one-hundred-and-fifty-million-dollar cash margin call was ticking away, and every creditor in the room had blood in their eyes.
Up on the central marble dais, standing behind a polished mahogany podium emblazoned with the golden crest of Vance Group, Richard Vance wiped his neck with a damp silk handkerchief.
His navy Italian tuxedo, tailored just three days ago, felt tight around his chest. Under the glaring heat of four broadcast spotlights, sweat beaded along his hairline, melting the pomade styling his hair. His hands twitched slightly as he adjusted his lapel microphone.
High above the ballroom floor, concealed behind the smoked-glass privacy screen of the eighty-ninth-floor VIP shadow balcony, Victoria Vance stood motionless. She wore a high-collared gown of obsidian silk, her silver-streaked hair swept up into an immaculate twist. Her right hand rested on the white marble railing, the heavy emerald-cut jade ring on her thumb catching the ambient light. Her face was an unreadable porcelain mask, but her dark eyes were fixed on the double doors at the far end of the grand hall.
Beside her in the shadows, her Chief Security Officer leaned down. “The Blackwood Syndicate operative is positioned near the stage entrance, Madam,” he whispered. “Disguised as a banquet supervisor. The silent pneumatic rounds are prepped. The moment Lord Vane steps into the light, it will look like a sudden stroke.”
“Make sure there are no errors,” Victoria said, her soft voice flat, devoid of warmth or hesitation. “Richard cannot carry the weight of this night alone. Lord Vane’s blood must stain this floor before the midnight trading bell.”
Down on the stage, Richard cleared his throat into the microphone. A harsh spike of audio feedback screeched through the ballroom speakers, forcing several row-one bankers to wince and cover their ears.
“Distinguished guests, members of the international press, and esteemed shareholders!” Richard’s loud, boisterous voice boomed across the hall. He forced a wide, aggressive smile, throwing his shoulders back with manufactured confidence. “I am aware that rumors and artificial market volatility have created minor ripples in today’s trading session. But allow me to state unequivocally—Vance Group remains an unshakeable colossus!”
PR handlers stationed around the perimeter began clapping loudly, prompting a hesitant, scattered applause from the crowd.
“Today, I am proud to announce two historic milestones that will solidify our reign for the next half-century!” Richard shouted, his voice echoing off the glass walls. He gestured dramatically toward the central thirty-foot holographic display behind him. “First, Vance Group has officially finalized a five-hundred-million-dollar emergency credit facility backed by premier Zurich institutions. Second, within the hour, we will execute a binding, exclusive corporate merger with our long-standing partners, the Chen Consortium!”
At the front table, several Swiss bank representatives exchanged cold, skeptical glances. One senior auditor glanced down at his tablet, muttering under his breath, “His debt margin defaults tomorrow afternoon. What credit facility?”
Richard picked up a glass of champagne from the podium table, raising it high into the air. Sweat trickled down his temple, but his eyes shone with frantic, defensive bravado. “To Vance Group’s eternal reign, and to the union of Capital City’s greatest empires!”
Before he could bring the glass to his lips, a heavy, reverberating metallic thud echoed from the back of the hall.
The massive ten-foot double oak doors of the Grand Ballroom swung open.
The string quartet’s violins faltered and stopped. The clinking of champagne flutes died instantly. A heavy, suffocating silence swept across the eight-hundred-square-meter ballroom, as if the air pressure in the room had suddenly dropped.
Framed by the doorway stood Ethan Vance.
He wore a bespoke charcoal tailcoat with sharp peak lapels cut from heavy midnight wool, tailored to perfection over his broad shoulders. Standing six feet two inches tall, his posture exuded the cold, unyielding authority of an absolute monarch. His dark hair was brushed back, framing a sharp jawline, and his steel-gray eyes scanned the vast room with terrifying composure.
Arm-in-arm beside him walked Celeste Chen. She wore a breathtaking emerald-green silk evening gown with a high side slit, her obsidian black hair cascading over one shoulder. Diamond chandelier earrings glittered against her long neck, reflecting the white light of the room. She held her head high, a faint, razor-sharp smile playing upon her lips.
For three seconds, no one moved. Then, camera flashes exploded into a blinding frenzy.
“Is that… Celeste Chen?” a tech journalist gasped near the front row. “She’s arm-in-arm with Lord Vane!”
“Where is her engagement ring for Richard?” another voice shouted over the growing uproar.
Richard’s glass frozen halfway to his mouth. His face turned from flushed red to a sallow, sickly grey. “What… what is this?” he stammered into the live microphone, his voice cracking. “Security! Who authorized these intruders into a private Vance Group event?!”
Ethan did not answer. He did not speed up his stride. Step by step, his leather oxfords struck the marble floor in a slow, rhythmic cadence that seemed to silence the room’s chaotic hum. Celeste walked alongside him, perfectly synchronized, their presence sweeping away the grandeur of Richard’s setup like a tidal wave.
They stopped ten feet from the foot of the stage.
Ethan slowly reached into his charcoal coat, pulled out a small black matte transmitter, and pressed a single button.
Behind Richard, the thirty-foot holographic display shuddered. The gold-lettered promotional graphic of the Vance Group and Chen Consortium logos shattered into red pixelated static.
A sharp warning siren beeped twice through the house sound system. Then, towering red typography slammed onto the screen, glowing in high-definition clarity:
**FORENSIC AUDIT & LEGAL NOTICE: VANCE GROUP SUBSIDIARY EMBEZZLEMENT**
**TARGET VEHICLE: APEX GLOBAL ASSET MANAGEMENT / LUXEMBOURG HOLDINGS**
Gasps tore through the ballroom. Swiss bankers shoved past security guards to reach the front of the stage. Reporters scrambled frantically, pivoting their heavy lens rigs toward the screen.
On the massive display, thousands of encrypted bank transaction logs began auto-scrolling at high speed. Offshore shell account numbers in Singapore, wire transfers routing through Grand Cayman proxies, and forged quarterly balance sheets flashed in indisputable detail. Highlighted in bright amber rows were sixty-eight illegal high-interest loan agreements executed with the Blackwood Syndicate—totaling two hundred and twelve million dollars.
Beneath every fraudulent authorization seal, glowing in sharp digital clarity, was Richard Vance’s verified biometric electronic signature.
“This is fake!” Richard screamed, dropping his champagne flute. The glass shattered against the marble, spilling golden liquid over his shoes. He lunged at the podium controls, wildly hammering his hands against the touch console. “Turn it off! Cut the power! IT department, cut the damn power!”
“The server feed is routing directly through Valerius Holdings’ satellite node, Mr. Vance,” Celeste’s voice rang out. She didn’t use a microphone, yet her clear, articulate tone carried effortlessly through the stunned hall. “Your local console has been locked out for twenty minutes.”
From the front row, Senior Vice President Weber of Zurich Global Private Banking stepped onto the stairs of the dais, flanked by three uniformed legal officers holding heavy blue folders.
“Mr. Richard Vance!” Weber announced, his voice amplified by the live media boom mics hovering overhead. “As Senior Vice President of Zurich Global Private Banking and representative of the primary noteholder, Valerius Holdings, I am serving you with an immediate asset freeze order issued by the High International Commercial Court!”
Weber slapped a thick stack of legal documents directly onto Richard’s mahogany podium. “Your personal assets, corporate credit lines, and subsidiary equity are seized effective immediately. Furthermore, due to severe criminal embezzlement and loan fraud, a default demand of two hundred and twelve million dollars is invoked right now.”
“No… no, wait!” Richard stammered, backing away from the podium, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold them up. “My mother… Chairwoman Victoria will settle this! We have assets! We have land!”
“You have nothing, Richard,” Celeste said coldly, stepping forward. “Ten minutes ago, the Vance Group Board of Directors held an emergency video quorum. Based on the live forensic evidence broadcast across global networks, the board voted unanimously to strip you of all executive authority and remove you as Chief Executive Officer.”
“You… you bitch!” Richard roared, his mind snapping under the weight of total public humiliation. He charged toward the edge of the stage, his fingers clawing air. “You conspired with this foreign dog to ruin me!”
Before Richard could reach the stairs, Ethan took a single step forward, placing himself between Richard and Celeste.
At that exact moment, behind a tall floral arrangement of orchids and white roses five yards to the left, a man dressed in a black banquet supervisor uniform slipped his hand beneath his jacket.
The Blackwood Syndicate assassin drew a sleek, matte-black suppressed pistol. His eyes locked onto the left side of Ethan’s chest. His finger tightened around the trigger.
He never fired.
From the dark shadow behind the velvet stage curtains, Victor—Ethan’s Chief Security Officer—glided out like a phantom. With lightning speed, Victor’s right hand clamped over the assassin’s wrist, twisting the weapon upward while his elbow slammed into the operative’s sternum with quiet, bone-crushing precision.
*Snap.*
A muffled groan was lost beneath the shouting crowd. Victor caught the silent suppressed weapon mid-air, slid it into his coat pocket, and dragged the limp assassin back behind the velvet curtain in less than two seconds. The nearby guests were so paralyzed by the drama on stage that not a single person noticed the silent takedown.
Victor gave Ethan a subtle, two-millimeter nod from the curtain fold.
Ethan didn’t even look back. His eyes remained fixed on Richard, who had collapsed onto his knees on the carpeted dais, gasping for breath as if the oxygen in the ballroom had been completely drained.
Ethan stepped onto the stage. The sound of his polished shoes against the wood was the only noise left in the hall.
He walked past the stunned Swiss banker, past the scattered legal files, and stopped directly over his kneeling half-brother.
Ethan’s shadow fell completely over Richard, blotting out the harsh glare of the stage spotlights.
Richard looked up, his face slick with sweat and tears, his eyes wild with terror and confusion. “Who… who are you?” Richard whispered, his voice trembling. “What do you want from me?”
Ethan slowly stooped down, leaning his face near Richard’s ear.
In a low, icy baritone that vibrated with five years of buried iron and blood, Ethan whispered three sentences:
“The debts of five years ago are collected with compound interest, little brother. Did you truly believe the harbor waters were deep enough to drown a king?”
Richard’s breath hitched violently. His pupils dilated until his eyes were almost entirely black. The voice, the tone, the terrifying cadence—the ghost that had haunted his nightmares for five years had stepped out of the grave and stood before him in a tailored charcoal suit.
“Ethan…” Richard gasped, his throat tightening so hard he could barely choke out the name. “You… it’s you… you came back…”
“I didn’t come back to reclaim a seat, Richard,” Ethan whispered, his voice dropping into a register colder than absolute zero. “I came back to bury the throne.”
Ethan stood up straight, turning his back on the broken man whimpering on the floor behind him.
He did not look at the cameras. He did not look at the shouting journalists or the panicking board members.
Instead, Ethan raised his chin and looked straight up toward the eighty-ninth-floor VIP shadow balcony.
Across eighty feet of open space, through the soft haze of the crystal chandeliers, his steel-gray gaze locked onto Victoria Vance.
Up on the balcony, Victoria had stepped out from behind the smoked glass.
Her porcelain composure had shattered into dust. Her hand gripped the cold marble railing so hard that her knuckles were turned stark white, her heavy jade ring biting deep into the flesh of her thumb. Her chest heaved in shallow, jagged breaths as she stared down at the man standing on her stage.
In that single, electrifying moment of eye contact across the vast ballroom, the truth struck Victoria like a thunderbolt.
The tactical short attacks. The logistics blockade. The surgical destruction of Richard’s financial infrastructure. It wasn’t the work of an ambitious foreign hedge fund titan.
It was Ethan Vance. The stepson she had framed, disgraced, and ordered murdered five years ago had returned from the dead as an unyielding sovereign.
Down on the ballroom floor, a passing waiter stood frozen near the stage steps, holding a silver tray laden with fresh champagne flutes.
Ethan calmly reached out, picked up a crystal flute of clear vintage champagne, and held it between his fingers.
Keeping his eyes locked directly onto Victoria’s trembling form on the balcony, Ethan slowly raised the glass in a single, cold, deliberate toast.
He did not smile. He did not speak.
The gesture was an absolute declaration of war.
Up on the balcony, Victoria felt a sudden, icy chill sweep through her veins. The golden throne she had built on blood, fraud, and betrayal over twenty years had cracked down the middle.
Volume 1 was over. The execution of Richard was complete.
And the blood war for Volume 2 had just begun.
