Chapter 4: The Wall Street Boardroom Showdown
Scene 1: The Emergency Boardroom Vote
POV: Julian Sterling / Victoria Vance
The 60th-floor executive boardroom of Vance Tower was suffocating.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the morning sun was blocked by dark, swirling storm clouds. Inside, fourteen members of the Vance Group Board of Directors sat surrounding the thirty-foot mahogany table. Sweat glistened on the foreheads of wealthy, elderly men in ten-thousand-dollar suits.
On the giant digital ticker screens mounting the western wall, Vance Group stock ($VNC) was down forty-eight percent in pre-market trading. The seventy-two-hour default clock set by Blackwood Capital was down to its final two hours.
At the head of the table, Julian Sterling slammed a leather-bound fifty-page contract onto the wood.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the board,” Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the acoustic glass walls. He was pale, his eyes rimmed with red, but his tone dripped with desperate, coercive aggression. “This acquisition agreement by Sterling Enterprises is the only life raft left in Metro City! Blackwood Capital is attempting a hostile debt takeover to liquidate Vance Group for scrap value. If you sign this asset-sale resolution today, Sterling Enterprises will inject four hundred million dollars in cash and assume our primary liabilities!”
A senior board member, Arthur Pendelton, slammed his pen down. “This valuation is daylight robbery, Julian! You are proposing to purchase Vance Group’s core biopharmaceutical patents and real estate portfolio at a seventy percent discount! You’re stripping Vance Group down to an empty shell just to enrich Sterling Enterprises!”
“If you don’t like seventy percent, Arthur, how do you feel about zero?” Victoria Vance stood up beside Julian, her voice like a steel whip cracking across the room.
Her posture was rigid, her dark eyes flashing with lethal menace as she pinned Pendelton with a glare.
“If Blackwood enforces that default notice in two hours,” Victoria sneered, “every share you hold in this company becomes worthless paper. Federal receivers will step in, freeze your stock options, and initiate criminal clawbacks on your executive bonuses. Sign the resolution, gentlemen… or your careers, your reputations, and your fortunes in Metro City end today!”
A heavy, terrified silence fell over the room. The board members exchanged anxious, panicked glances.
Victoria leaned over the table, sliding the master signature page toward Pendelton. “Sign it, Arthur. Now.”
Pendelton’s hand trembled. He picked up his Montblanc fountain pen, his knuckles white, hovering the nib just above the signature line. Julian smiled—a victorious, predatory sneer returning to his lips.
“That’s it,” Julian whispered triumphantly. “Sign it.”
Scene 2: The Creditor Injunction
POV: Evelyn Vance (Vesper)
BOOM.
The heavy double mahogany doors of the executive boardroom blew open, slamming against the interior walls with a reverberating thud that shattered the room’s tension like glass.
The fourteen board members jumped in their seats. Pendelton dropped his pen, a blob of blue ink smudging across the contract page.
A woman walked into the boardroom.
Evelyn Vance was a vision of absolute, sovereign power. She wore an impeccably tailored white pantsuit made of double-faced silk crepe, her raven hair cascading down her shoulders in glossy, precise waves. The silver viper brooch pinned to her white lapel caught the artificial lights of the boardroom, gleaming like a blade.
Walking in step behind her were six men in dark charcoal suits—four senior federal investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission, and two armed United States Marshals carrying official brass-sealed leather binders.
Julian’s face flushed dark purple. He pointed a trembling, enraged finger at her.
“You!” Julian screamed. “Security! Where the hell is building security?! Throw this woman out of my boardroom immediately!”
Two Vance security guards rushed into the doorway, but before they could lay a finger on Evelyn, the lead U.S. Marshal stepped forward, flashing a gold badge and expanding a high-court federal injunction order.
“Stand down, security!” the Marshal bellowed, his voice echoing with undisputed federal authority. “Under Federal Insolvency Order 409, issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, this boardroom is under federal jurisdiction!”
Julian froze, his mouth hanging open in shock.
Evelyn walked down the center of the boardroom with slow, majestic composure. The white silk of her trousers rustled softly against the plush carpet. She stopped directly at the foot of the mahogany table, looking up at Julian and Victoria as if looking at insects trapped beneath a microscope.
She reached into her white jacket, pulled out a heavy document bound in thick red ribbon, and laid it casually on the center of the mahogany table.
“Federal Insolvency Order 409,” Evelyn said softly, her velvet voice cutting through the silent, terrified room. “As of 9:00 AM today, Blackwood Capital and Cross Global hold ninety-four percent of Vance Group’s senior and secondary debt tranches. Under federal credit covenants, all voting authority of this board of directors is formally suspended.”
She looked at Pendelton, then swept her silver eyes across the thirteen panicked executives surrounding the table.
“Your board has no authority to sell an asset, sign a contract, or liquidate a single paperclip, Julian,” Evelyn stated with absolute, terrifying calm. “Any signature placed on that fire-sale agreement is an act of federal bankruptcy fraud carrying a mandatory fifteen-year sentence.”
Pendelton instantly pushed his chair back, pulling his hands away from the contract as if it had caught fire.
Scene 3: The Live Wall Street Exposure
POV: Evelyn Vance (Vesper)
“You lying bitch!” Julian roared, slamming his fist onto the table so hard a glass of water overturned. “You think you can come into my company and pull a cheap legal stunt?! Blackwood’s default notice is still under judicial review! We have two hours left!”
“The review is finished, Mr. Sterling,” Evelyn replied smoothly. She picked up a slim black remote control from her pocket and pointed it at the giant wall of digital ticker screens behind Julian.
BZZZT.
The live stock market feeds flickered and vanished. In their place, six high-definition video displays lit up simultaneously, displaying complex corporate financial flowcharts, bank routing numbers, and forensic accounting audits.
At the top of the screens flashed a giant header in glowing red text:
[STERLING ENTERPRISES ($STRG): FORENSIC FRAUD & MONEY LAUNDERING AUDIT]
“What… what is that?!” Victoria gasped, her face draining of all color as she stared at the screen.
“That,” Evelyn said, walking along the edge of the boardroom table, “is the true balance sheet of Sterling Enterprises.”
She clicked the remote. Screen two zoomed in on a network of offshore shell accounts in Panama and Saint Kitts—including Helios Holdings.
“For three years,” Evelyn explained, her voice projecting like a judge delivering a verdict, “Julian Sterling has been running a massive, illegal ponzi-pyramid scheme inside Sterling Enterprises. He took out eight hundred million dollars in unrecorded margin loans from European shadow banks, using forged Vance Group biopharmaceutical patents as illegal collateral.”
The board members gasped. Several executives stood up, staring at the screens in utter horror.
“He didn’t come to save Vance Group today,” Evelyn continued, her silver eyes locking onto Julian’s terrified face. “He came to strip Vance Group’s assets to cover an eight-hundred-million-dollar margin call that is due on his own company at 10:00 AM today.”
“It’s a lie! It’s a forged document!” Julian shrieked, his voice cracking, sweat pouring down his temples, soaking his collar. “She’s fabricating data! Turn it off!”
Evelyn clicked the remote once more. Screen four switched to a live satellite broadcast of CNBC’s Wall Street desk.
The lead financial news anchor was speaking frantically into his lapel mic:
“…Breaking news out of Wall Street! The Securities and Exchange Commission has just issued an unprecedented emergency trading halt on Sterling Enterprises ($STRG) following an explosive, four-hundred-page criminal fraud filing submitted by Blackwood Capital and Cross Global! Federal marshals are currently executing search warrants at Sterling Enterprises headquarters in Manhattan…”
Julian dropped into his executive leather chair as if he had been shot through the chest. His eyes were wide, glassy, and completely unseeing.
Scene 4: Panic & The Short Squeeze Signal
POV: Julian Sterling / Evelyn Vance
The boardroom exploded into absolute chaos.
“Fraud! He dragged us into federal fraud!” Arthur Pendelton screamed, grabbing the fire-sale contract, tearing it into shreds, and hurling the paper into Julian’s face.
“Call my lawyers!” another executive yelled, sprinting toward the exit doors. “Get me out of this building before the marshals arrest us all!”
Board members knocked over chairs, scattered documents, and stampeded toward the private elevators to escape federal implication. Within ninety seconds, the grand boardroom was emptied of everyone except the federal marshals, the SEC investigators, Victoria, Julian, and Evelyn.
Julian sat in his chair, trembling violently. The reality of total, absolute destruction washed over him. His fortune, his reputation, his company, his freedom—all obliterated in less than twenty minutes.
Slowly, Julian raised his head. His eyes were red-rimmed, bloodshot, and filled with a psychotic, unhinged rage.
“You…” Julian spat, his teeth grinding together as he stood up, pushing his chair back so violently it crashed into the glass window. “You destroyed me… You ruined my life! Who the hell are you?! Why are you doing this to me?!”
He lunged across the mahogany table toward Evelyn, his fingers curled like claws, aiming for her throat.
“I’ll kill you!” Julian screamed.
WHAM!
Before Julian could get within two feet of Evelyn, the two heavy-set U.S. Marshals moved with brutal efficiency. One marshal grabbed Julian’s arm, twisting it behind his back, while the second tackled him onto the hardwood floor, slamming his face hard against the smudged blue ink of the destroyed contract.
CLICK.
Cold steel handcuffs snapped tightly around Julian Sterling’s wrists.
Evelyn didn’t even step back. She stood over the disgraced billionaire, her white pantsuit spotless, looking down at him with cold, imperious detachment.
She pulled her encrypted phone from her pocket.
With a single tap of her thumb, she sent an encrypted broadcast signal to Blackwood Capital’s global trading desks and to Dominic Cross’s personal terminal at Cross Global.
[VESPER]: EXECUTE PHASE ONE SHORT SQUEEZE. LIQUIDATE STERLING ENTERPRISES.
Three seconds later, the speakerphone on the boardroom table chimed. Julian’s chief financial officer was calling from Sterling HQ, his voice shrill with pure hysterical terror:
“Julian! Julian, pick up! It’s over! The SEC lifted the trading halt for ten minutes of emergency liquidation! Blackwood Capital and Cross Global just dropped a ONE BILLION DOLLAR short position against our equity! Our stock just crashed from eighty dollars to four dollars! We are receiving an immediate one-billion-dollar margin call! We are bankrupt, Julian! Bankrupt!”
Julian lay pinned on the floor, his cheek pressed against the cold wood, sobbing hysterically as the automated trading alarms echoed through the phone.
Evelyn stepped over his writhing body. She leaned down slightly, her silver eyes piercing his soul.
“This isn’t ruin, Julian,” Evelyn whispered, her voice rich with ruthless, cathartic satisfaction. “This is just interest on what you owe.”
She turned to the U.S. Marshals. “Take him away.”
The marshals dragged the screaming, sobbing Julian Sterling out of the boardroom, his custom Tom Ford suit torn, his hands cuffed tightly behind his back.
Cliffhanger Hook
Evelyn stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows of the 60th floor, watching the storm clouds outside part to reveal the gleaming towers of Metro City.
Behind her, the boardroom was silent.
She turned around to address Victoria Vance.
But the Chairwoman’s seat at the head of the table was empty.
During the chaotic arrest of Julian Sterling, Victoria Vance had quietly slipped out through the boardroom’s private executive side exit.
Down in the VIP parking garage of Vance Tower, Victoria sprinted into the back seat of her armored Maybach. Her face was deathly pale, her hands shaking as she pulled her encrypted phone from her purse and dialed her chief private security operative at St. Jude Medical Center.
“Listen to me very carefully,” Victoria snarled into the phone, her voice dripping with venomous desperation. “Blackwood has taken the board. Sterling is destroyed. Initiate Operation Swiss Shield immediately.”
She pressed her face against the tinted glass of her car as the Maybach accelerated out of the garage into the pouring rain.
“Get Alexander onto that medical helicopter at Helipad B right now,” Victoria ordered softly. “If we fly him to Zurich tonight, Vesper will never prove the poisoning. And if Alexander dies over the Atlantic… no one will ever know the truth.”
She hung up the phone, her dark eyes reflecting the rainy neon lights of Metro City, oblivious to the fact that high above her, on Helipad B, jet engines were already beginning to roar.
