Volume 1, Chapter 5: The Blackout Siege & Blood on the Canvas

She’s My Baby Now 5 of 6

The subterranean atelier was quiet at 2:00 AM, the only sound the quiet hum of the climate control system and the drumming of heavy rain against the reinforced storm vents. Soft amber task lights illuminated the easel holding The Veiled Siren.

Gabriella Vance stood inches from Henrique Castro. The revelation of his three-year anonymous patronage had shattered the last of her emotional walls. She looked up into his storm-gray eyes, seeing the immovable devotion burning there.

“Three years you watched over me from the dark,” Gabby whispered, her voice trembling slightly in the quiet lab. “Why didn’t you step forward sooner?”

“Because I wanted you to choose me freely, Gabriella,” Henrique murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips. “Not because you needed a shield, but because you wanted the man behind it.”

Gabby lifted her hands, pressing her palms against the solid muscle of his chest. “I’m choosing you, Henrique. Right now.”

She closed the distance.

Their first kiss was fierce, breathless, and electric. Henrique’s large hand went instantly to the nape of her neck, pulling her flush against him. The faint scent of clove, turpentine, and his rich cedarwood cologne overwhelmed her senses. Her pulse fluttered wildly as he deepened the kiss, a possessive, reverent surrender that cemented the undeniable truth: they belonged to each other.

Suddenly, a high-frequency whine pierced the air.

THUMP.

An EMP blast knocked out the main power grid. The amber task lights died instantly, plunging the brownstone into pitch black. A second later, emergency crimson LED strips flickered to life along the baseboards, casting the laboratory in a bloody, eerie glow.

Henrique broke the kiss, his body snapping instantly from tender lover to lethal syndicate commander. He drew his custom matte-black Sig Sauer from his shoulder holster, the metallic slide racking with a sharp clack.

His tactical radio crackled to life.

“Boss!” Nikolai’s voice shouted through the static. “Perimeter breached at the rear garden alley. Six hostiles in full tactical gear—they bypassed the external lasers using an Abreu framing bypass code! It’s Luciani’s mercenaries.”

“Lock down Sector 3,” Henrique ordered coldly. He turned to Gabby. “Gabriella, get inside the vault chamber.”

Gabby didn’t panic. Her surgical composure kicked in. She spun toward the easel, carefully but swiftly lifting The Veiled Siren. She carried it to the subterranean titanium blast vault, sliding it inside and spinning the heavy combination dial until the locking bolts slammed home with a heavy hydraulic thud.

She turned back to the room, grabbing a heavy tungsten micro-scalpel from the Florentine chest.

“The painting is secured in the titanium safe, Henrique,” Gabby said, her voice steady. “I’m not hiding like a coward. I’m holding this room.”

Henrique gripped her face, kissing her forehead with fierce, terrifying intensity. “Do not open this door for anyone but me.”

He slipped out into the crimson-lit corridor, moving like a phantom.

Alone in the lab, Gabby backed into the shadows near the chemical glassware shelves, controlling her breathing. Overhead, the muffled pop-pop-pop of suppressed gunfire echoed through the air ducts.

A heavy grating sound came from the maintenance duct above the lab. The vent crashed to the floor. A man dropped into the room.

It was Vogel, the mercenary squad leader, wearing night-vision goggles and gripping a submachine gun. He scanned the room, ignoring the shadows, and lunged straight for the titanium safe. He swore, realizing it was locked, and turned.

He spotted Gabby.

“Come here, you crazy bitch,” Vogel growled, charging at her.

As Vogel grabbed her left shoulder, Gabby didn’t scream. She pivoted with the exact surgical precision she used to separate 500-year-old varnish. She slashed the tungsten scalpel horizontally across his extending right arm.

The razor-sharp blade sliced clean through Vogel’s radial flexor tendons.

Vogel roared in agony, dropping his weapon. In a blind rage, he swung his heavy left fist, backhanding Gabby hard. She slammed backward into the chemical shelving unit. Glassware shattered in a blinding shower, a jagged shard grazing her left wrist. Hot blood dripped down her hand.

Vogel reached for the sidearm at his thigh.

The laboratory door was kicked clean off its hinges.

Henrique stood in the doorway, bathed in crimson light, his weapon smoking.

“Step away from her,” Henrique’s voice vibrated with absolute death.

He fired three suppressed rounds in rapid succession. The bullets took Vogel in the chest. The heavy, resonant thud of the mercenary’s body hitting the polished concrete echoed through the room.

Gabby slumped against the steel counter, breathing hard, the scalpel still tight in her grip. “The vault held, Henrique. He didn’t touch the painting.”

The backup generators kicked in with a roar. Sterile white light flooded the room, the exhaust hoods sucking away the acrid stench of cordite and ozone.

Henrique crossed the room in two massive strides and dropped to both knees on the glass-strewn floor before her. Seeing the blood trickling down her wrist completely shattered his icy exterior.

His large hands actually trembled as he took her arm. He grabbed a bottle of antiseptic wash from an intact shelf, gently cleaning the graze. The sharp sting made her wince, but Henrique pressed a reverent, desperate kiss to her uninjured skin as he wrapped it in sterile white gauze.

“You were bleeding… in my house,” Henrique whispered, his voice shaking with restrained, apocalyptic fury. “Because of me.”

Gabby rested her clean fingers against his jaw. “I cut his arm open, Henrique. I defended our work. I am not fragile.”

Nikolai stepped into the lab, holding Vogel’s decrypted tactical burner phone. “Boss. The radio confirms it. Hugo Abreu texted the rear gate maintenance bypass codes at 1:15 AM. Luciani’s account in Zurich wired the half-million deposit.”

Henrique stood up. The vulnerability vanished, replaced by eyes colder than frozen steel.

“Hugo Abreu gave them the schematics to your sanctuary,” Henrique said, staring at the shattered glass on the floor. “Tomorrow night is the Metropolitan Antiquities Gala. When the sun rises again, Hugo Abreu and Lorenzo Luciani will not have a single dollar, a single friend, or a single breath of freedom left in this city.”
