Chapter 6: An Honest Horizon

Scorned at the Newport Vows: The Billionaire in the Greasy Jacket 6 of 6

The gravel lane ended where the smell of damp pine gave way to Atlantic salt and the rich, earthen scent of fresh cedar shavings. Diane Vance stepped out of her sedan into the crisp fifty-degree morning air, pulling her charcoal cashmere coat tighter against the chill.

Miller Marine Works sat nestled inside a secluded, rocky granite cove five miles north of Newport harbor. It was a sanctuary of authentic craftsmanship. The shipyard boasted towering one-hundred-ton travelifts, precision bronze lathes, and immense drydocks, operating miles away from the hollow pageantry of the Belleview Yacht Club.

As the coastal mist lifted, the first golden rays of dawn spilled over Narragansett Bay. Down at the end of a private cedar dock, a sixty-foot mahogany racing cutter floated motionless on the glass-flat water. The vessel’s ivory hull caught the amber light, and her polished bronze winches gleamed like struck coins.

Caleb Miller stood on the teak deck. He wore a heavy navy wool fisherman’s sweater with the sleeves pushed up his muscular forearms, dark denim, and deck boots. He coiled a three-quarter-inch hemp halyard with the effortless, practiced rhythm of a master shipwright.

Hearing her leather boots on the timber dock, Caleb looked up. His slate-gray eyes crinkled into a warm, genuine smile.

“You brought coffee,” Caleb said, stepping toward the polished teak rail.

Diane held up the double-walled thermos. “Dark roast. Two mugs. Though after last night, I half-expected you to have a full barista staff on standby.”

Caleb extended a broad, calloused hand over the lifeline. “Good machinery only needs two things, Diane: clean oil and good coffee. Come aboard.”

She took his hand. His grip was warm and solid, sparking a grounded, electric chemistry that required no adolescent blushing or forced dialogue. She stepped onto the immaculate deck of the Aletheia.

They sat together in the spacious cockpit, the steam from their ceramic mugs mingling with the cold ocean air. Diane opened her leather portfolio, reviewing the overnight legal docket.

“Chief Judge Henderson confirmed the commercial receivership at midnight,” Diane reported, her voice carrying a deep, resonant satisfaction. “The pensions are one hundred percent safe. Richard was denied bail at four o’clock this morning as a flight risk, and Evelyn is under electronic house arrest.”

Caleb took a slow sip of his coffee, looking out over the water. “Good. The men who work these yards deserve to sleep knowing their futures aren’t paying for someone else’s champagne.”

He set his mug down, tracing the grain of the teak coaming. “I grew up on drydocks, Diane. Watched my father get discarded by management when his back gave out after thirty years of turning wrenches. I built Atlantic Marina Group to ensure that the people who build and bleed for this industry are never at the mercy of men like Richard Vance again.”

Diane studied his profile—the rugged jawline, the quiet intelligence, the absolute integrity that he wore as comfortably as his canvas coats. For the first time in fifteen years, she felt no need to wear her defensive armor. She was fully recognized, respected, and valued by a true equal.

“You’ve built an empire on honesty, Caleb,” she said softly.

“It takes the right crew to keep it honest,” he replied, turning to face her.

He reached beside the helm and retrieved a navy leather portfolio. He opened it and presented it to her. Inside lay a flawless, heavy-stock contract.

“Chief Global Legal Counsel and Managing Director of Maritime Infrastructure for AMG,” Caleb said. “Full executive covenant. Unilateral authority over all commercial restructuring and port acquisitions. I need an apex litigator who knows how to cut through the rot.”

Diane read the terms, a radiant, unburdened laugh escaping her lips. “This is a declaration of war on half the corrupt shipping conglomerates on the East Coast.”

“That’s the idea,” Caleb smiled. “And it comes with a signing bonus. We’re sailing to Maine for lobster rolls. If you’re free.”

Diane pulled her Montblanc pen from her pocket—the same pen she had used to dismantle Richard’s fraudulent waiver. She signed the AMG contract with a bold, sweeping flourish.

“I’m free,” she said, handing the portfolio back. “Completely free.”

Caleb stepped forward and cast off the heavy hemp mooring lines. He moved to the mast, hoisting the crisp white canvas mainsail. The heavy cloth caught the morning offshore breeze with a sharp, powerful snap.

He returned to the cockpit and invited Diane to take the polished teak wheel. She stepped up, grasping the spokes. Caleb stood close beside her, his hand resting gently next to hers, radiating a quiet, unshakeable solidarity.

As the Aletheia—the vessel of Truth—cut cleanly through the golden swells into the open Atlantic, Diane Vance felt the morning sun warm her face. The storm was finally behind her, and the horizon was completely hers.
