Margaret picked up the three heavy binders. She didn’t look at the security guard. She walked past Henderson, the heavy rubber soles of her boots squeaking on the linoleum.


The administration conference room was excessively warm. The mahogany table gleamed under the recessed lighting. Bradley Cole sat at the head of the table. He wore a tailored charcoal wool coat over a crisp white shirt. On his right hand, a heavy 25-year gold Apex signet ring caught the light as he rested his fingers on a leather folder.

Henderson took a seat near the door, looking miserable. Margaret stood at the opposite end of the table, the three binders pressed against her chest.

Margaret did not sit. She placed the binders on the mahogany surface, keeping her hands firmly on the covers.

Cole opened his leather folder and slid a piece of heavy bond paper across the polished wood. It stopped a few inches from Margaret’s hands. It was a corporate cashier’s check.

Attached to the check with a silver paperclip was a five-page legal document. A global release of liability.

“The plant wants to honor Thomas’s legacy,” Cole said smoothly, leaning back in his leather chair. “We know the medical bills have been difficult. Margaret looked down at the check. Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Enough to pay off the crushing medical debt. Enough to keep the farmhouse.

She pushed the check back across the polished table. It slid smoothly, stopping abruptly against Cole’s gold signet ring.

“Molecules don’t lie, Mr. Cole,” Margaret said, her voice dropping into a flat, acoustic deadness that carried through the room. “People do. She drove through the rainy night, the wipers slapping rhythmically against the windshield, the heater blasting against her numb hands. She drove for three hours until the urban sprawl of Williamsport materialized through the rain-slicked highway.

At 8:00 AM, the city was gray and loud. Margaret parked illegally on 4th Street and walked up to a narrow storefront sandwiched between a pawn shop and a closed bakery. Gold-leaf lettering on the glass read: Marcus Vance, Attorney at Law.

He closed the binder and rested his hands flat on the cover.
