Chapter 9: The Unveiling

Jilted On Wedding Day, Royal Parents Find Me 9 of 12

The Grand Ballroom of the Imperial Citadel was a cathedral of blinding grandeur. Vaulted ceilings carved from white marble rose toward vast frescoed domes depicting celestial legends of old. Thousands of crystal chandeliers hung like suspended constellations, bathing the cavernous hall in a warm, golden radiance. Banners of royal crimson and gold—bearing the ancient sigil of the Sun and the Golden Dragon—cascaded down columns of polished obsidian. Below, the highest nobility of Eldoria gathered in a sea of velvet gowns, tailored doublets, and shimmering jewels. Dukes, duchesses, high arch-mages, and foreign diplomats mingled in expectant murmurs, sipping vintage elven wine.

Positioned near the marble staircase leading toward the elevated High Dais stood Lord Julian Vance, his mother Lady Victoria Vance, and Baroness Chloe.

Julian wore a tunic of silver and navy, his chest puffed out with arrogant pride as his fingers stroked his silver-hilted rapier. Beside him, Lady Victoria fanned herself with a carved ivory fan, her painted lips curled into a smirk of supreme satisfaction.

“Look at this crowd, Julian,” Lady Victoria whispered loudly, her voice dripping with haughty pride. “The entire realm has gathered, and House Vance is front and center, where we belong. It was only fitting that the Grand Chamberlain sent our invitation. After all, the capital must recognize true aristocratic standing.”

“Indeed, Mother,” Julian replied, taking a slow sip from his crystal glass. He sneered, turning his gaze toward Chloe, who leaned against his arm in a silk emerald gown adorned with peacock feathers. “To think that just days ago, I was almost shackled to that pathetic commoner. If I had married Aria, House Vance’s reputation would have been dragged through the mud forever. Can you imagine her in a place like this? A low-rank light-healer smelling of common herbs and poverty?”

Baroness Chloe giggled softly, her eyes sparkling with malicious triumph. “Oh, Julian, don’t remind us of that tragic little pest. Thanks to our efforts at the Healers’ Guild Tribunal, her license is as good as revoked. By now, she and those two filthy, ragged old peasants she chose over you are probably begging for scraps at the outer city gates!”

“She got exactly what she deserved,” Lady Victoria sniffed dismissively. “Disrespecting House Vance on her wedding day! Choosing two illiterate country bumpkins over my son! Tonight, as we witness the return of the Lost Crown Princess, we shall solidify our ties with the Imperial Court and leave that wretched girl in the gutter where she belongs.”

Julian smirked, feeling an invigorating surge of pride. The scandal at the cathedral was behind him. Aria had been ruined, her career destroyed, her name disgraced among the nobility. Tonight was the dawn of House Vance’s ascendancy.

Suddenly, a deafening blast of silver trumpets echoed through the vast hall, cutting through the chatter like a honed blade.

FFRRRRRAAAANNNNGGG!

The heavy bronze doors flanking the High Dais swung open with a resounding thud. Silence fell over the ballroom in a sudden rush. Every duke, knight, and lady turned toward the elevated dais, lowering themselves into deep, synchronized bows.

Eight Grand Knights of the Sun Guard stepped through the threshold first. Clad from head to toe in gleaming mithril-plate armor, their blue-and-gold cloaks sweeping behind them, they raised their halberds in sharp unison along the golden carpet.

Behind them came the High Monarchs of Eldoria.

A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom as King Arthur and Queen Eleanor stepped onto the High Dais.

King Arthur was a figure of terrifying majesty. He was clad in golden imperial armor forged from sun-blessed steel, overlaid with a mantle of heavy crimson velvet lined with ermine fur. At his waist hung the legendary blade Aethelgard’s Dawn, glowing with a subtle golden aura. Atop his brow sat the High Crown of Eldoria, radiant with crushed diamonds.

Beside him stood Queen Eleanor. She wore a majestic gown of deep imperial sapphire, spun with silver thread that seemed to shimmer like running water. Her emerald-studded coronet rested upon her silver-blonde hair, her posture exuding ancient sovereignty.

The two monarchs stood on the highest tier of the dais, looking down upon the gathered aristocracy with eyes that held the weight of mountains.

At the foot of the dais, Lord Julian Vance lowered his head into a respectful bow, a confident smile on his face. Next to him, Lady Victoria curtsied deeply, and Chloe bowed her head, her heart fluttering with ambition.

Julian slowly raised his gaze to admire the legendary King.

Then, Julian’s breath caught in his throat. His smile froze. The blood drained from his face so fast he felt a sudden wave of nausea. His eyes widened in utter disbelief.

No… Julian thought, his mind staggering. No… that’s impossible. That can’t be…

Beside him, Lady Victoria raised her eyes as well. The ivory fan slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering loudly against the marble floor. Her mouth opened in a silent scream. Her face turned the color of chalk, her knees buckling so hard that Chloe had to grab her arm to keep her from falling.

“M-Mother…” Julian gasped, his voice a strangled squeak. “Look at the King… look at the Queen…”

Baroness Chloe looked up, her smug expression melting into a grotesque mask of pure terror.

There, standing atop the High Dais under the blinding light of a hundred crystal chandeliers, were King Arthur and Queen Eleanor.

Their golden armor and royal silks could not hide their faces. Their stern countenances, their piercing violet eyes, their tall, commanding stances—they were unmistakably the exact same two people who had walked into the Grand Cathedral of Aethelgard on Julian’s wedding day!

The two “weather-beaten, ragged peasants” in muddy brown cloaks! The “illiterate country bumpkins” whom Julian had insulted, mocked, and demanded be thrown out into the storm! The “worthless beggars” whom Lady Victoria had threatened to arrest, and whom Chloe had sneered at with utter disgust!

Julian’s brain short-circuited. Cold sweat poured down his neck, soaking his embroidered collar.

The peasant parents… were the High King and Queen of Eldoria?!

“Julian…” Lady Victoria whispered, her hands shaking violently. “Tell me I’m dreaming. Tell me those aren’t the same peasants from the cathedral…”

Julian couldn’t speak. His tongue felt like lead. On his wedding day, he had stood before the supreme rulers of the kingdom—the absolute monarchs who held the power of life and death over every soul in Eldoria—and he had called them trash. He had demanded his bride disown them.

Before the hall could recover, King Arthur stepped forward to the edge of the dais. His voice, amplified by wind magic, boomed through the chamber.

“Lords and Ladies of Eldoria!” King Arthur declared with absolute authority. “Fifteen years ago, during the dark days of the Great Rebellion, our infant daughter—the trueborn Crown Princess of this realm—was stolen from the royal nursery.”

The crowd listened in reverent silence.

“For fifteen agonizing years,” the King continued, his piercing gaze sweeping over the crowd, “the Queen and I searched every corner of the continent. And when at last the stars guided us to her, we did not return as conquerors. We shed our crowns. We dressed in humble garments of wool and linen, traveling through mud and rain as simple peasants.”

Queen Eleanor stepped beside her husband, her voice ringing out like crystalline steel, locking her cold violet eyes directly onto Julian, Lady Victoria, and Chloe.

“We traveled in disguise for a purpose,” Queen Eleanor said. “We wished to see how the world treated our daughter. We wished to test the hearts of those who claimed to love her, and to see whether the nobility of this kingdom possessed true honor… or merely hollow, corrupt vanity.”

Lady Victoria gasped for air, clutching her throat. Chloe shrank back behind Julian, her face pale as a corpse.

Julian felt as if the temperature in the room had dropped below freezing. The King and Queen had experienced House Vance’s cruelty firsthand. Every insult and cruel word uttered in the cathedral had been recorded by the sovereign rulers of the realm.

King Arthur raised his gauntleted right hand toward the golden doors behind the dais.

“Tonight, the search is over!” King Arthur thundered with overwhelming pride. “Tonight, we present to the realm the trueborn blood of the Sun, the savior of the sick, and the rightful heir to the High Throne of Eldoria!”

The silver trumpets sounded once more—a triumphant fanfare vibrating through the floorboards. The central golden doors of the High Dais swung wide.

Flanked by the Arch-Mage of the Grand Council and the High Commander of the Imperial Guard, a figure stepped into the light.

She was breathtaking. She was clad in a sweeping gown of deep royal midnight blue, crafted from silk so fine it seemed woven from the night sky. Embroidered along the hem were silver constellations glowing with ethereal light. Her long dark hair framed a face of pure grace and unshakeable strength.

And atop her head rested the Crown of Starlight—an ancient imperial relic of pure mithril and glowing starlight crystals. As she stepped forward, her celestial magic resonated with the crown, casting a brilliant halo of golden and silver light around her form. Warmth and divine light bathed the hall, filling the air with the scent of blooming white lilies.

It was Aria. Princess Aurelia of Eldoria.

A collective gasp swept through the nobility as counts and duchesses lowered themselves into deep, reverent bows.

At the foot of the dais, Julian felt his knees give out completely. He stumbled backward against a marble pillar.

“No…” Julian whimpered, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine. “No… Aria is the Crown Princess…?”

The girl he had called a lowborn commoner, whose light-healing magic he had mocked, whom he had humiliated and tried to force into choosing between her marriage and her family… was Princess Aurelia—the sole heir to the High Throne!

Beside him, Lady Victoria collapsed onto her knees upon the marble floor, sobbing in incoherent terror. “My God… what have we done…?”

Baroness Chloe buried her face in her hands, trembling hysterically. The Healers’ Guild Tribunal… the bribes she had paid to strip Aria’s license… it was high treason against the Crown Princess! The penalty for persecuting royal blood was execution or life in the dark dungeons beneath the Citadel.

Up on the High Dais, Princess Aurelia stood beside her royal parents. Her luminous violet eyes slowly swept across the grand ballroom.

Then, her gaze descended directly onto Julian.

For a long second, time stood still. Julian looked up into the eyes of the woman he had jilted and betrayed. There was no anger in her gaze, only the cold dignity of a true sovereign—and a quiet, overwhelming disdain that made Julian feel smaller than a grain of dust.

King Arthur stepped beside his daughter, resting a heavy hand upon her shoulder. His golden aura flared like a miniature sun, casting long shadows across the floor.

His eyes locked onto the trembling, kneeling figures of Julian Vance, Lady Victoria, and Baroness Chloe.

The King’s hand slowly reached down, gripping the ruby hilt of Aethelgard’s Dawn.

“And now,” King Arthur’s voice cut through the silence like an executioner’s axe, deep with imperial wrath, “let those who dared insult, abuse, and persecute the Crown Princess of Eldoria step forward to face Imperial justice!”

CLAAAAANG!

In perfect unison, the eight Grand Knights drew their broadswords, their sharp steel blades pointing directly at the heart of House Vance.

Julian collapsed to both knees, his face pressed against the icy marble as the shadow of imperial doom descended upon him.
