Chapter 4: The Quiet Test
The morning mist clung to the cobblestones of the South Ward, where the stench of stagnant water and unwashed wool hung heavy in the air. This was the underbelly of Aethelgard—a place noble carriages sped through with closed curtains, where the elite mages of the Healers’ Guild refused to set foot unless paid in silver bars.
In a dilapidated wooden building that served as the St. Jude Free Clinic, Aria was already hard at work before sunrise.
Her wedding dress had been tucked away into an old wooden chest, replaced by her familiar, faded linen tunic and a simple leather apron. Her pale hands, stained with the juices of crushed moon-lily roots and silver-moss paste, moved with practiced grace from one patient to the next.
“Hold still, little Toby,” Aria whispered softly to a six-year-old boy whose chest heaved with the harsh, dry rales of Grey Cough. She placed her right palm over his sternum, breathing in deeply to focus her remaining mana. A soft, pearlescent glow emanated from her skin—gentle, warm, and soothing.
The boy’s frantic gasping slowly eased. His fever broke, leaving him breathing peacefully as he drifted off to sleep.
“Bless you, Lady Aria… bless you,” the boy’s mother sobbed, trying to press two copper coins into Aria’s hand. “It’s all I have from selling firewood…”
Aria gently pushed the woman’s hands back. “Keep it, Mistress Martha. Buy soup and clean blankets for Toby. Healing is not a luxury to be bought; it is a mercy.”
In the darkest corner of the clinic, sitting on a rickety wooden bench, sat Thomas and Mary.
Wrapped in their threadbare wool cloaks, they looked like any other elderly refugees fleeing border skirmishes. But beneath their hood, their eyes tracked Aria’s every movement with an intensity that defied their humble appearance.
Queen Eleanor—disguised as Mary—choked back a tear, clutching King Arthur’s arm beneath her cloak. “Arthur… look at her. Pushed out of the cathedral in shame yesterday, stripped of her prospective noble house, yet here she is at dawn, using her last drop of strength to heal orphans without asking for a copper.”
King Arthur’s jaw set into a firm, proud line. His calloused fingers tightened around the hidden golden signet ring resting in his pocket. “Fifteen years ago, when the rebel Duke Vane staged his traitorous uprising at the summer palace, we thought our infant Aurelia was lost to the blood and fire. We searched every province in Eldoria. And to think she was raised in the borderlands, growing up with the heart of a true sovereign.”
“She passed the test, Arthur,” Eleanor whispered. “Yesterday at the cathedral, when Julian Vance demanded she disown her ‘peasant’ parents to marry into wealth, she did not hesitate for a single second. She chose love and honor over fake nobility.”
“Indeed,” Arthur’s voice vibrated with a low, dangerous resonance. “She has proven herself worthy of the Starlight Crown. But before we reveal ourselves, we must see how deep the corruption in Aethelgard runs. Lord Julian Vance and his scheming mistress think they can crush an unprotected girl. They do not know they are poking an imperial dragon.”
Suddenly, the heavy wooden doors of the clinic were kicked open with a loud BANG.
Three guards wearing the blue-and-silver livery of the Healers’ Guild marched inside, their boots spattering mud across the clean floor. The lead guard unrolled a parchment document stamped with a blood-red wax seal.
“Aria the Low-Rank!” the guard bellowed, his voice echoing off the rafters. “By decree of Guildmaster Malakor and upon the formal complaint of House Vance, you are summoned to the High Guildhall immediately! You stand accused of magical insubordination, public disgrace, and unauthorized practice of light magic!”
The poor patients in the clinic shrank back in terror.
Aria wiped her hands on her apron and stood tall, her eyes calm and unwavering. “I have broken no oath of healing.”
“Tell that to the Guildmaster!” the guard sneered, reaching out to grab her arm.
Before his gauntleted hand could touch Aria, Thomas stepped forward. The elderly “peasant” didn’t raise a weapon or shout, but as he stepped between the guard and Aria, an aura of sheer, crushing pressure rippled through the air.
The guard’s hand froze mid-air. An involuntary shiver ran down his spine, a sudden instinctual terror warning him that if he took one more step, he would die.
“She will attend the tribunal,” Thomas said, his voice quiet, calm, and utterly absolute. “And we shall accompany her.”
The guard swallowed hard, sweat breaking out on his forehead, and nodded nervously. “T-Tribunal starts at noon! Do not be late!”
As the guards retreated, Aria turned to her parents, her eyes full of concern. “Father, Mother… House Vance controls the Guild. It will be dangerous at the tribunal. You should stay here.”
King Arthur smiled warmly, placing a heavy, reassuring hand on her shoulder. “A daughter of our blood never walks into battle alone, Aria. Lead the way.”
