Chapter 2

Don’t Wake The Maid On My Chest 2 of 6

The executive corridor outside the Pharaoh’s master suite smelled of ionized air and spent cordite. The penthouse security grilles had descended twenty minutes prior, locking down the fifty-fourth floor in response to the perimeter breach. The high-rise emergency generator hummed through the reinforced floorboards, transferring a relentless, low-frequency vibration from the Italian marble tile straight into the heavy rubber soles of four pairs of tactical boots.

Walsh led the breacher stack. The forty-five-year-old security chief wore a full Kevlar rig over his broad chest. His buzz-cut scalp glistened with cold sweat under the amber emergency lighting. He held his suppressed Heckler & Koch USP .45 at the low ready, the muzzle positioned flush against the seam of the master bathroom door. His trigger finger hovered bare millimeters above the safety catch. A three-man assault team stacked tight behind his shoulders, their breathing synchronized and shallow, waiting for the breach command.

Behind the tactical formation, Pierce Keenan tracked incoming satellite telemetry on a ruggedized terminal. Pierce’s Savile Row tailored three-piece suit caught the dim light, the sharp tailoring a stark contrast to the ballistic armor surrounding him. The crisis folder in his left hand contained the impending doom of a maritime customs seizure and a hijacked cargo manifest. His polished oxford shoes tapped an impatient rhythm against the baseboard.

Walsh tightened his grip on the polymer frame. The bathroom remained pitch-dark behind the bulletproof observation glass panel. He thumbed the activation switch on his tactical rail. A blinding white cone of xenon light slashed through the gloom. The high-lumen beam swept past the shattered vanity mirror, illuminated the blood splattered across the sink basin, and pinned the sunken porcelain bathtub.

Walsh’s breath hitched in his throat.

Don Reed Ashford sat wedged in the unheated ceramic basin. Dried blood coated his left hand, soaking deep into a flour-stained canvas kitchen towel wrapped around his knuckles. His charcoal three-piece suit hung torn at the shoulder, the silk lining exposed to the frigid air circulating from the damaged ventilation duct. Sprawled across his chest, an unidentified woman in a heavy canvas apron slept dead away. Her fingers curled instinctively into the ruined wool of his vest. Her temple rested flush in the hollow of his collarbone.

Walsh assumed a cartel assassin or a rogue operative had incapacitated the Don. His thumb dropped the safety catch. The microscopic metallic click resonated down the corridor. He reached for the electronic door bypass card strapped to his tactical webbing.

Inside the tub, the xenon beam struck Reed’s face. He did not blink. His slate-gray eyes snapped open and locked onto Walsh through the reinforced glass. The harsh lighting illuminated the feral, predatory exhaustion carving the deep lines of his jaw. The adrenaline crash from the prior hour’s violence left his skin pale, but the focus in his stare remained razor-sharp.

Maisie shifted. Her cheek dragged across the fabric of Reed’s collarbone, seeking warmth against the chill of the bathroom tiles.

Reed braced his spine against the freezing porcelain. He locked his core muscles into rigid iron, absorbing the entire kinetic transfer of her motion. He refused to let his chest become anything other than an unyielding, secure platform for her rest.

Slowly, with surgical deliberation, Reed raised his right index finger. He pressed the blood-stained digit flat against his own lips.

Walsh’s hand hovered inches from the magnetic lock.

Reed leaned forward one precise centimeter. His stare pinned Walsh’s retinas through the glass partition. The syndicate sovereign mouthed eight distinct syllables, articulating each word with lethal clarity.

Touch her and I’ll pull every tooth out of your head.

Walsh froze. The blood drained from his face. He lowered the muzzle of his USP .45 six inches toward the floor tile.

Pierce read the posture change. He stepped out from the breacher stack, catching the lethal promise radiating from the other side of the glass. Pierce raised both hands, shoving the tactical operators backward. His tailored sleeve snagged on a ceramic armor plate.

“Stand down, Pierce,” Walsh murmured in a low gravel tone. “If you open that door, he’ll kill both of us before the latch clicks.”

Pierce stared through the glass, his jaw slackening. “He’s sitting on a bathroom floor holding an apron like it’s the Holy Grail while Julian Vance is stealing our docks.”

The corridor fell silent.

Inside the bathroom, time stretched into an agonizing test of physical endurance. At 1:30 AM, the cold radiating from the ceramic basin sank deep into Reed’s bone marrow. Numbness crawled up his lower spine, paralyzing his lumbar nerves. Severe cramps coiled through his calf muscles, tightening into absolute agony. He refused to shift his boots a fraction of an inch.

His heart rate spiked, a physiological demand for movement. He initiated military combat breathing counts. Four seconds inhaling the scent of her warm cotton collar and toasted yeast. Four seconds holding the breath, registering the contrasting copper odor of dried blood crusting on his cuffs. Four seconds exhaling silently. Her shallow breathing patterned against his throat.

For the first time in fifteen years, his nocturnal claustrophobia vanished. The heavy, warm weight resting against his chest acted as a neurological circuit-breaker, grounding his hyper-vigilance into profound stillness. The woman’s dead sleep anchored his sanity. The faint scent of stone-ground flour and lavender soap eclipsed the residual smell of cordite and adrenaline that usually saturated his nights.

Maisie sighed softly in her deep, comatose physical exhaustion. The brutal hours of continuous kitchen labor under threat of death had drained her completely. Her small fingers curled tighter into the charcoal wool of his vest, anchoring herself to the steady rhythm of his heart. Reed’s bandaged left hand rested flat on the tub rim, paralyzed by strict design. He stared at the ceiling, enforcing his own immobility, guarding the only sanctuary he had found in a decade and a half.

Out in the hallway, Pierce paced tight loops on the carpet. The distant, muffled howl of an Atlantic gale battered the reinforced exterior glass of the penthouse. Pierce pressed the encrypted satellite phone to his ear, whispering furious, rapid-fire commands to frantic harbor capos down in the shipping yards. Julian Vance’s mercenaries were systematically disassembling their perimeter defenses. Forty million dollars in cargo sat exposed on Pier 42, waiting for the maritime customs seizure to finalize the theft.

Walsh enforced the silence. He stood at rigid parade rest against the doorframe, glaring down any operator who so much as shifted their weight on the marble. The hour dragged past 2:00 AM, the seconds ticking by in agonizing slow motion.

The pins-and-needles ache in Reed’s legs evolved into searing fire. The cramps locked his quadriceps. The porcelain leeched the body heat from his back, turning his spine into a column of ice. Still, he provided the unyielding warmth Maisie required to remain submerged in sleep. She had collapsed from absolute physical depletion, her body surrendering entirely to the exhaustion she had fought off for days.

At 2:45 AM, Reed tracked the brass hands of an antique clock positioned on the far wall. The night shift approached its end.

He slid his massive right arm under Maisie’s knees. He threaded his injured left hand behind her neck, ignoring the sharp spike of pain radiating from his torn knuckles. He rose from the tub in a single, fluid ascent, his massive thighs absorbing the immense strain without a single joint popping.

Maisie’s head tucked deeper into the crook of his neck. A soft, unintelligible murmur escaped her lips concerning rising dough. She remained dead asleep, entirely trusting the arms that carried her.

Reed nudged the bathroom door latch down with his elbow. He stepped into the corridor, carrying her dead weight. The amber emergency lights cast long shadows over his ruined suit and her flour-dusted apron.

Pierce rushed forward, thrusting the leather crisis folder toward Reed’s chest. “Reed, forty million—”

Reed’s gaze snapped to Pierce. The raw, predatory violence in those gray eyes strangled the words in the consigliere’s throat.

Reed spoke. The gravel-low baritone barely carried three feet, scraping out from deep in his chest.

“Bay three. The Maybach. If a single door slams on the loading dock, Walsh, you lose your thumbs.”

Walsh snapped a crisp nod.

Reed turned and carried the sleeping cook down the executive corridor. He stepped into the private elevator. He cradled her against his chest as the heavy steel doors slid shut with a pneumatic hiss.

In the dim amber hallway, Pierce stood paralyzed, staring at the digital floor numbers descending into the subterranean levels. He clutched his encrypted phone.

Walsh tapped his tactical throat mic. His voice cut through the encrypted syndicate channel.

“Convoy three, engines on idle. Do not rev. Don is moving with critical cargo. Anyone makes a sound in the garage, I bury you under Pier 42.”
