Chapter 4: The Poisoned Trap & Bond Spark

Alpha, You Have A Secret Cub! 4 of 6

The Great Hall of the Silvermoon Royal Palace shimmered with a deceptive radiance. High above the polished obsidian floors, crystal chandeliers held aloft by intricate silver scrollwork cast a warm, starlit glow over hundreds of assembled wolf nobles. The air was dense with an intoxicating mix of roasted game, spiced honey wine, and the underlying, competitive pheromones of dozens of prominent packs.

Yet beneath the music of stringed harps and the loud, celebratory toasts, Seraphina felt the skin on the back of her neck prickle with instinctual alarm.

She sat at the head of the royal high table, draped in elegant silver-threaded silk robes that had been forced upon her by the palace attendants. Beside her, five-year-old Leo was perched on a plush velvet booster cushion. The boy’s dark curls bounced as he enthusiastically devoured a platter of glazed venison, his big hazel eyes sparkling whenever Alpha Kael leaned down to speak to him.

“You must chew slowly, little prince,” Kael’s deep, resonant baritone vibrated softly beside Seraphina. His voice was filled with a gentle warmth that seemed entirely at odds with his towering, intimidating 6’3″ frame and the lethal Alpha aura that usually kept the court in silent awe.

Kael reached over, his long, calloused fingers delicately brushing a stray crumb from Leo’s cheek. “The cooks prepared the berry tarts just for you. But only after you finish your meat.”

Leo grinned, his small wolf ears popping out from his dark hair in pure excitement before he quickly remembered his mother’s warnings and flattened them back down. “I’m eating fast so I can grow big and tall like you, Alpha Kael! Mommy said Alphas have to eat all their vegetables too, but I think meat works better!”

Kael chuckled—a low, rumbling sound that resonated straight into Seraphina’s chest. His golden eyes shifted toward her, molten and filled with an unreadable, intense heat. “Your mother is very wise, Leo. But from now on, you don’t need to call me Alpha Kael. You may call me Father.”

Seraphina’s hand tightened around her silver goblet until her knuckles turned white. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. For five years, she had survived in the cold, damp shadows of human cities, shielding Leo from the brutal hierarchies of wolfkind. Now, sitting beside the most powerful Alpha in the realm, surrounded by lords who viewed her as nothing more than a nameless stray, she felt more exposed than ever.

“Do not make promises to him that court politics will break, Kael,” Seraphina murmured under her breath, her voice crisp, low, and laced with iron caution. She kept her gaze fixed on the crowded hall below. “Look around us. Half these elders are staring at my son as if he were an intruder, and the other half are waiting for me to slip up.”

“Let them stare,” Kael replied instantly, his tone darkening into a possessive growl that sent a shiver down her spine. He shifted closer, his broad shoulder brushing against hers. The subtle, intoxicating scent of rich cedarwood and rain-washed pine rolled off him, cutting through the heavy perfume of the hall and causing Seraphina’s inner wolf to whimper in helpless recognition. “Leo is my legitimate blood heir. The Ancestral Stone proved it beyond doubt. Anyone who dares look down on you or our son is committing treason against the Silvermoon throne.”

“And what about her?” Seraphina tilted her head slightly toward the lower dais.

There, seated among the high-ranking Sunfang Clan delegation, sat Princess Lyra. She was breathtakingly beautiful, clad in shimmering golden silk that clung to her curved form, her blonde hair styled into elaborate braids. But behind her practiced, honeyed smile and half-lidded ice-blue eyes, Seraphina could smell the bitter stench of concealed rage. Lyra had spent six years positioning herself to become Kael’s Luna, bribing elders and forging political alliances. The sudden appearance of a secret cub and a stray mate had shattered her life’s ambition in a single morning.

As if sensing Seraphina’s gaze, Lyra raised her crystal wine glass in a graceful, silent mock toast. Her crimson-painted lips curved into a cruel, knowing smile.

She’s planning something, Seraphina’s wolf whispered inside her mind, pacing restlessly within her core. The air smells wrong. There is poison in the wind.

Seraphina’s maternal instincts flared to absolute red alert. She reached out under the tablecloth and placed a protective hand on Leo’s knee. “Leo, stay close to me. Do not take food or drink from anyone except me or Kael.”

“Okay, Mommy,” Leo whispered obediently, sensing the sudden shift in his mother’s aura. He leaned his small body into her side, his golden eyes wide and watchful.

Before Kael could ask what was wrong, the heavy brass horns at the hall’s entrance sounded a solemn flourish. The Grand Chamberlain stepped forward, his voice echoing over the quieted crowd.

“Presenting the ceremonial Royal Welcome Toast for the young Prince of Silvermoon!”

A troupe of royal servants dressed in formal white tunics filed into the hall, bearing silver trays of rare fruit and crystal carafes of sweet, glowing red nectar. Among them, a tall, pale cupbearer with nervous eyes and stiff shoulders detached himself from the line, making a direct path toward the high table. On his silver tray rested a single, exquisitely carved chalice of golden glass, filled with a sparkling, crimson liquid that emitted a sweet, floral aroma.

“My Lord Alpha, Lady Seraphina, young Prince,” the cupbearer bowed low, his hands trembling slightly as he elevated the tray toward Leo. “This is the sacred Moon-Berry Nectar, harvested from the highest peaks of the Sunfang territory to celebrate the young prince’s divine return.”

Princess Lyra stood up gracefully from her seat below, her voice carrying across the quieted hall with melodious warmth. “Consider it a gift of peace and goodwill from the Sunfang Clan, Alpha Kael. We welcome your long-lost heir to the realm with open arms.”

The assembled elders murmured in approval, pleased by the apparent display of clan unity.

The cupbearer lifted the golden chalice and presented it to Leo. “Drink deeply, young prince, and receive the blessing of the sun and moon.”

Leo looked up at Kael, then at Seraphina, waiting for permission. The sweet aroma of the nectar drifted across the table—a heavy scent of crushed wild berries, honey, and floral blossoms.

To any ordinary wolf, it smelled divine.

To Seraphina, whose dormant Supreme White Wolf senses possessed an extraordinary sensitivity to the natural world, a razor-thin needle of acrid foulness pierced through the sweet mask. Deep beneath the honeyed berries lay the faintest, almost imperceptible scent of crushed Night-Shadow Root and distilled Wolfbane—a lethal, magic-laced toxin specifically crafted to paralyze a young wolf’s internal organs and melt their healing capability from within.

“Leo, DON’T!” Seraphina shrieked, her hand slamming forward to strike the cupbearer’s hand away.

At that exact microsecond, Kael’s royal Alpha tracking instincts—sharpened by a hundred battles—spiked violently. His olfactory nerves caught the microscopic trace of Sunfang wolfbane taint floating off the liquid.

POISON.

Kael’s eyes flared from molten gold to a terrifying, feral crimson. Faster than the strike of a viper, his huge hand shot across the table. Instead of merely blocking the cupbearer, Kael’s fingers clamped around the stem of the golden chalice mid-air, yanking it violently away from Leo just as the boy reached out!

“What is the meaning of this—” the cupbearer gasped, turning pale as death.

Kael did not answer with words. He hurled the chalice onto the marble floor at the foot of the dais.

CLANG!

The golden goblet shattered. The shimmering crimson liquid spilled across the white polished marble.

Within seconds, an appalling, corrosive hiss filled the silent banquet hall. Where the liquid touched the stone, dark purple foam bubbled furiously, burning deep, black pit-marks into the pristine marble while releasing a plume of vile, acrid grey smoke!

A collective, horrified gasp erupted across the hall. Lords scrambled back from their tables; noble ladies screamed in shock.

“Wolfbane!” High Commander Valerius roared, drawing his silver blade instantly. “The drink is laced with black wolfbane poison!”

“Mommy!” Leo cried out in fear, shrinking back.

Seraphina immediately pulled Leo into her arms, covering his head against her chest, her violet-blue eyes flashing with molten silver fury as her suppressed wolf snarled for blood.

The cupbearer dropped his tray, spun on his heel, and attempted to dive into the panicking crowd of servants.

“HALT!”

Kael’s voice exploded with the raw, terrifying force of a Royal Alpha Command. The sheer acoustic and sonic pressure of his aura hit the hall like a thunderclap. Tapestries rattled; glass windows vibrated. The fleeing cupbearer froze mid-stride, his knees buckling instantly under the absolute weight of Kael’s dominance, crashing face-first onto the stone floor while vomiting blood from the sheer pressure of the Alpha’s voice.

“GUARDS! SEAL EVERY EXIT!” Kael bellowed, his voice vibrating with lethal, unbridled fury. “NO ONE LEAVES THIS HALL ALIVE UNTIL I HAVE THE HEAD OF THE ONE WHO FIRED THIS SHOT!”

Dozens of heavy silver-clad Royal Guards drew their swords simultaneously, blocking every archway and balcony entrance. The atmosphere inside the banquet hall turned instantly from celebration to an icy, suffocating warzone.

Kael turned back to his table, his entire frame shaking with murderous rage. His shadow-silver Alpha aura expanded out from his body like visible dark flames, his fangs extending past his bottom lip. He looked at Leo, ensuring his son was unharmed, and then his frantic gaze fell upon Seraphina, who was breathing heavily, shielding the boy with her own body.

Driven by an overwhelming, primal instinct to protect his family, Kael stepped forward and slammed his body against Seraphina’s side, wrapping one massive arm around her waist and burying his hand into her dark hair, pulling her and Leo tight against his chest.

“Are you hurt?” Kael gasped, his hot breath brushing against her temple, his voice trembling with a rare, terrifying vulnerability. “Tell me! Did any of it splash on you?”

“No… no, we’re fine,” Seraphina breathed, her hands clutching Kael’s leather doublet.

The moment their skin made direct, unhindered contact—the moment Kael’s frantic Alpha protection collided with Seraphina’s fierce maternal instincts—something catastrophic and transcendent occurred.

THUMP.

A sound like a massive war drum detonated deep within their chests.

For five years, the ancient, divine Fated Mate bond between Alpha Kael and Seraphina had lay dormant, buried beneath her bloodline masking oils, her trauma, and his desperate, fruitless search. But now, under the high-stress adrenaline of mortal danger and physical touch, the dormant bond ruptured like a breached dam.

BOOM!

A blinding column of brilliant, celestial light erupted from the space between Kael and Seraphina!

It was not mere shadow or crimson Alpha magic. A stunning, iridescent shockwave of pure gold and celestial silver light expanded outward in a majestic ring, washing across the entire Great Hall! The heavy, suffocating scent of wild white lotus, celestial ozone, and deep cedarwood exploded into the air, so intense and pure that every wolf in the room—from the highest council elders to the lowest foot soldiers—instantly fell to their knees, their inner wolves bowing in instinctual, helpless reverence.

Above Kael and Seraphina’s heads, the air shimmered and condensed, forming a visible, ethereal mark in the sky: two intertwined wolves—one a roaring Shadow-Silver Alpha, the other a breathtaking, radiant Celestial White Queen—surrounded by a crown of blazing moon-stars.

The True Fated Mate Mark. The Mark of the Supreme Sovereigns.

“By the Gods…” High Priest Malakor collapsed to his knees at the foot of the dais, his ancient hands trembling as he stared up at the glowing light. “The true mate aura… The Soul-Bond of the Ancients! She… she is not a stray! She is the fated Supreme Luna of the Silvermoon Realm!”

The entire court gasped in sheer awe and terror. The nobles who had spent the evening sneering at Seraphina’s faded silk robes now trembled, unable to raise their heads beneath the crushing, divine majesty of the mate aura.

Seraphina gasped, her body arching slightly into Kael’s hold as the mate bond flooded her veins with liquid fire. Every nerve ending in her body sang; the five years of cold, lonely pain melted away in an instant, replaced by Kael’s raw, possessive love, his grief, his ferocious protectiveness, and his soul’s absolute devotion echoing directly into her mind.

You are mine, Kael’s wolf roared inside her head, clear as thunder. My mate. My Luna. My everything.

Kael… Seraphina whimpered mentally, her golden-silver eyes meeting his molten crimson-gold gaze. The mask was gone. The secret was shattered before the entire world.

Kael held her tight, his heart thumping in perfect, synchronized rhythm with hers. He turned his head slowly toward the lower dais, his eyes narrowing into two slits of lethal crimson flame. The divine mate mark still glowed brilliantly above them, casting an inescapable light over the terrified crowd.

Down on the floor, Princess Lyra had fallen to her knees like the rest, but her face was completely drained of color. Her hands shook violently against her golden dress; her ice-blue eyes were wide with pure terror and disbelief.

“No…” Lyra whispered, her voice cracking as she stared at the glowing celestial mark above Seraphina. “No! It’s impossible! She’s a nameless stray! A dirty rogue! I am the daughter of the Sunfang Clan! I am meant to be Luna!”

Kael stepped down from the high table, his boots echoing like execution gongs against the scorched marble floor. He kept one hand firmly wrapped around Seraphina’s waist, dragging her beside him in an absolute, unyielding posture of shared sovereignty, while Beta Valerius carried young Leo safely behind them.

Kael halted five paces from the groveling cupbearer and Princess Lyra. The temperature in the hall plunged to sub-zero levels as Kael’s Alpha pressure concentrated entirely on the two of them.

“High Commander Valerius,” Kael commanded, his voice cold enough to freeze blood.

“My Lord!” Valerius snapped to attention.

“Drag that scum to his feet,” Kael motioned to the cupbearer.

Valerius grabbed the cupbearer by the hair, hauling him up. The man was weeping hysterically, blood dripping from his nose. “Mercy, Alpha! Mercy! I was only following orders! I was given ten thousand gold pieces to serve the chalice!”

“Who gave you the poison?” Kael asked softly—a quiet, lethal whisper that was far more terrifying than a roar. “Speak, or I will peel the skin from your wolf frame while you are still breathing.”

The cupbearer’s eyes darted frantically, stopping directly on Princess Lyra. “Her! Princess Lyra! Her shadow agent, Vane, gave me the chalice in the lower pantries twenty minutes ago! She promised me protection under the Sunfang Clan!”

“YOU LIE!” Lyra shrieked, scrambling backward on her hands and knees. “He lies! Alpha Kael, my love, you must believe me! This stray wolf must have forged this dark magic! She is framing me! She used forbidden witchcraft to fake the bloodline test and fake this mate bond! Sunfang would never use poison!”

“Silence, serpent!” Kael growled. He did not even look at her face; his disgust was absolute. He raised his hand, pointing directly at the scorched, melted marble on the floor. “That poison is Sunfang Bloodbane—a secret toxin brewed only in the royal vaults of your father’s palace. Do you take me for an idiot, Lyra?”

“Kael, please!” Lyra sobbed, her glamorous composure completely shattered. She reached out to grab the hem of his cloak, but before her painted claws could touch him, Seraphina stepped forward.

Seraphina’s violet-blue eyes flared into a shocking, molten silver. A wave of ancient, supreme pressure rolled off her, slamming into Lyra so hard that the princess collapsed flat onto her face, coughing for air.

“Do not touch my mate,” Seraphina said, her voice dropping into a deep, chilling tone that echoed with the divine weight of the Supreme White Wolf. “And never again look at my son with murder in your heart. If you ever breathe near Leo again, I will not wait for palace law. I will rip your throat out myself.”

The court elders shuddered. The sheer intensity of Seraphina’s aura was not that of a common rogue—it was the instinctual dominance of an ancient sovereign!

Kael looked down at Seraphina, his heart swelling with fierce pride and unspeakable adoration. He tightened his grip on her waist, drawing her flush against his side.

“Beta Valerius,” Kael ordered ruthlessly. “Strip Princess Lyra of her royal titles immediately. Place her and every member of the Sunfang delegation in the deep obsidian dungeons under heavy anti-magic chains. If anyone resists, cut them down.”

“No! You can’t do this! My father will bring war upon Silvermoon!” Lyra screamed as two heavy elite guards grabbed her by her gold-braided hair and arms, dragging her ruthlessly across the stone floor toward the iron gates. “Kael! I loved you for six years! You can’t toss me into the dark for a stray whore!”

“Her name is Seraphina,” Kael declared, his voice echoing across the silent, awestruck hall like an eternal decree. “She is the true Supreme Luna of the Silvermoon Realm, and the mother of the Crown Prince. Anyone who disrespects her will answer to my blade.”

As Lyra’s pathetic shrieks faded down the dark dungeon corridors, Kael turned back to the hall. The elders and lords remained on their knees, bowing their heads in complete submission to Kael and Seraphina.

Kael turned to Seraphina. The lethal red faded from his eyes, leaving only pure, unadulterated gold. He reached down and took her hand, lacing his long fingers with hers. The mate aura around them pulsed softly, a warm, golden sanctuary protecting them from the world.

“They tried to take our family away once five years ago,” Kael whispered, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand as he brought it to his lips. “Never again, Seraphina. From this night forth, no one touches you or Leo. I will burn the entire realm to ash before I let anyone hurt my Luna.”

Seraphina looked into his eyes, feeling the undeniable truth of his soul bond singing in her heart. For the first time in five long, painful years of exile, she felt the icy walls around her heart begin to shatter. She squeezed his hand back, her voice soft but steady.

“Then stand with me, Kael. Because the dark forces behind Lyra won’t stop here… and we have a son to protect.”

Kael smiled—a fierce, breathtaking smile of a king who had finally reclaimed his lost queen. “Let them come.”
